So, here we have a nice photo of Mr. Astaire from Paramount; it's him
being, well, him. I should have all of the movies right here; I've seen all of the musicals now. Oh, as an apology, the pictures will probably seem really dark and such. I haven't quite worked out the difference between viewing an image in Photoshop and through the web. Anyway. Without further ado, here are many of the pictures that I've come across.

Fred and Ginger
-
Here's promo shot of Fred and Ginger in their first movie together, Flying Down to Rio.
-
Here's a scene from Flying Down to Rio. The first guy, Gene Raymond (who, in my opinion, is pretty boring), Fred, and Ginger are looking for Delores Del Rio.
-
Here's another one from Flying Down to Rio. This is of Fred
and Ginger right after the previous picture. Fred's been thrown out on the street with a hungry Ginger. This one has Ginger Roger's signature on it.
-
Fred and Ginger in a cute pose from Flying Down to Rio. It's before Fred goes into his dance to "Music Makes Me"--a highly fun song!
-
Here's a cigarette card for the movie The Gay
Divorcee.
-
Look out! It's time for "The Continental,"
that new dance craze! And look who's leading the way!
-
Here's Fred and Ginger dancing some more to the Continental.
-
Here's a cute picture of Fred and Ginger dancing
the night away in The Gay Divorcee.
-
Here's a picture that was used on the Roberta
sheet music.
-
The quintessential Astaire-Rogers picture
from Roberta, to the tune of "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes."
-
Another picture from the above routine,
but this picture was in a book about Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean,
the best ice dancers ever!
-
This is a scene from Top Hat.
I love this picture. I really want the dress Ginger's wearing!
-
More Top Hat This is after Ginger's married Beddini. Poor Fred.
-
Another picture of Fred and Ginger
from Top Hat. This time, they're dancing to "the strains of that new melody" the Piccolino! (Hey, is it just me, or does that dress make Gigner look like she's got horrible posture?)
-
Here's another Top Hat selection that
I have to believe is from the movie. It doesn't look like anything that's in the movie, but I've seen pictures with the two of them and Irving Berlin on the same set, and this was the first Astaire-Rogers picture with Irving. Go figure.
-
I'm including this picture of the cover of "Cheek to Cheek" because it's
one of the nifty gold covers. Totally different
from the regular pink one!
-
This is a nifty artist's rendering
of Follow the Fleet (which I need to see).
-
Here's Fred and Ginger dancing to, oh, what was it? "Let Yourself Go"? Well, it was definitely after Ginger sang it in Follow the Fleet.
-
Here's a lobby card for Follow the Fleet.
-
Okay, these three pictures are way cool. They've got shots from the
routine "Let's Face the Music and Dance" from Follow the Fleet.
Here's page 1, page 2, and page 3. Of course, during the actual dance, Fred and Ginger aren't smiling, but that's okay.
-
Now we've gotten to my favorite Fred movie, well, ever: Swing Time!
Here's a picture from their "Pick
Yourself Up" number (you know, the one where he shows that he can dance).
-
This is another picture from the elaborate "Pick
Yourself Up" number, but this one's got autographs.
-
Another "Pick Yourself Up" one, this time
with Ginger's signature.
-
This picture gets used on a lot of pages, but this is from the "Waltz in Swing Time" number (minus the background).
-
Okay, this is more from the number "Waltz in Swing
Time."
-
"The lovely 'Waltz in Swing Time'" just one
more time!
-
More from Swing Time, this time from the intro to the song "A Fine Romance" (which I think is one of my favorite songs; it's so funny!!).
-
This is the cover of the Screen
Album when Swing Time came out. It's got a drawing
of Fred in and suit and Ginger in her "Never Gonna Dance" outfit.
-
This is a picture from some sheet music from Shall We Dance; it's
"They Can't Take That Away From Me."
-
Here's a cute picture from the movie Shall We
Dance. The routine's "They All Laughed."
-
Here's a picture from the dance routine to "They
All Laughed" (a song I really like). It's got Fred's autograph.
-
Here are two pictures from the Shall We Dance routine "Let's Call
the Whole Thing Off": we have them sitting with
their skates on and skating and dancing
away.
-
Okay, this is a little weird, but bear with me. First, here's a picture
from the "Shall We Dance" routine of Ginger.
Now, look at the picture of Fred from the same
routine. Cute, huh? (courtesy of the TCM homepage)
-
This is a magazine cover with "Astaire and Rogers
in scene from Carefree," and I quote!
-
Everyone, look out! Ginger's brandishing a knife!!!!! Actually, it was her birthday during the filming of Carefree, and they decided to have a big cake and everything
for her. How nice!
-
This picture I've seen used on other Fred Astaire
pages (what you can find on my links page)
is from the film Carefree.
-
This is a cover of Life Magazine from
1938 for the movie Carefree with Fred and Ginger dancing "The Yam."
-
"Change Partners"from Carefree. A beautiful dance.
-
Here's Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire still dancing
in Carefree to the tune of "Change Partners", with a nice autograph
from Miss Rogers.
-
More dancing from this great team, still to "Change Partners."
-
Okay, this is definitely from The Story of Vernon
and Irene Castle. The hat is unmistakable! It's their first professional dance together--in the film, of course.
-
"I love dancing!" Fred and Ginger
as Vernon and Irene Castle taking it away on the dance floor, with the
added bonus of having both of their autographs.
-
As Vernon and Irene Castle, Fred and Ginger--especially Ginger--get to dance in fun costumes!
-
This is my last picture from the story of the Castles. Isn't it their last dance together in the film? Except, of course, for the ghostly dance.
-
Now we're up to the time of The Barkleys
of Broadway. This picture is from the opening (which is best to see in That's Entertainment! 3 films) because it takes away the credits and you can actually see the dancing!. This one has Fred's signature.
-
Okay, here's a picture from the routine "My
One and Only Highland Fling".
-
More Barkleys. This, I think, is from "They
Can't Take That Away From Me," a dance that's nice but it was better in my imagination (I heard the song and the orchestration--which I adore--first, so what I imaged might have been done seemed better than what's there). It's still good!
-
This is what looks to be a publicity shot for "They
Can't Take That Away From Me."
-
This here is the cover of the Chicago Sunday
Tribune that's got a bunch of Barkleys pictures.
-
There's something about the gentleness of this picture that makes it one
of my all-time favorites of Fred and Ginger. I like it even better than dancing pictures!
-
A color picture from The Barkleys of Broadway!
-
This is just a cute picture of Fred and Ginger
from Barkleys.
-
This is a picture that I actually have! It's from Barkleys,
too.
-
Okay, so it's not a picture of them per se, but it's a picture of their
porcelain counterparts, which just so happen to be them from Barkleys.
Imagine that!
Fred on his own
Fred on his own
-
This is a cover picture from a book. A reliable source suggested
that it's from his stagedays, and I trust
her. (Actually, I found the original picture in a book recently, and it is from his stage days. If I could only remember which show it was.)
-
Here's a promo shot of Fred which I'm guessing
is from the Top Hat era.
-
Another promo shot, this time autographed!
-
Yep, you guessed it. Another promo shot.
-
This would be a casual picture from the
set of Follow the Fleet. (The sailor hat is a dead giveaway.)
-
Here's a picture I found of Fred from Follow
the Fleet, I presume (I mean, he's in a sailor suit, for crying
out loud). This picture is autographed, too.
-
Here's a simple Fred headshot.
-
This I'm guessing is a picture from Damsel in Distress,
but it's only a guess.
-
This is Fred dancing away to "Slap That
Bass" in Shall We Dance. This one's signed, too.
-
This looks like a cigarette card of Fred.
Whatever it is, it's promoting the film Carefree.
-
I have no idea when this is from, but it's Fred on his own holding
a top hat and cane, and it's autographed.
-
Because of the trumpet, this is probably a publicity
photo from the movie Second Chorus.
-
This too is from Second Chorus,
only this is a scene from the movie.
-
Dancing in a top hat, ascot, and tails to
"Puttin' on the Ritz" from Blue Skies.
-
Here's Fred dancing around in a gym in MGM's Royal
Wedding.
-
From one of his most famous routines, which appears in Royal Wedding,
see Fred Astaire dancing on the wall!
This is autographed as well.
-
This is from the routine "I Want to Be a Dancing
Man" from The Belle of New York...I think. Anyway, it's
a great number.
-
Just a casual picture of Fred golfing.
-
I'm not sure a year on this, but it's Fred dancing--big
surprise! It's autographed, but the scan has a bit of a streak on
it.
-
This looks like it was taken in, oh, the sixties,
maybe? I'm not sure, but it's signed, too.
-
Here's an older Fred with the top hat, ascot,
and cane.
-
I think that where I found this picture mentioned something about Fred's
special with Barrie Chase, so I'll guess and say that this is from
that time.
-
I was flying! I found this picture in
the same place, so we'll guess the same thing.
-
This picture looks like it's from That's Entertainment!;
the tie is certainly wide enough.
-
Now, a head shot of Fred from Finian's
Rainbow, which was pretty good. (I must admit, I was a little scared to see it, but I had nothing to worry about. Fred was still great.)
-
This is another picture from Finian's Rainbow,
but the lighting and his pose in general makes him look kind of psychotic.
Fred and others (mostly dancing)
Fred and others (mostly dancing)
-
This is just plain ol' cute: Fred at age 9 with Adele,
who was probably 11 or 12-ish at the time.
-
Here's something pretty cool: a program for The
Band Wagon, starring Fred and Adele Astaire
-
Fred's first ever movie appearance! In
MGM's Dancing Lady with Joan Crawford.
-
Here's Edward Everett Horton, Betty Grable, and
Fred Astaire at the end of the "Let's K-nock K-nees" number.
-
A scene from Top Hat with Fred and Edward Everett Horton again. Fred's been talking about how great it is to have "No Strings."
-
Here's Fred explaining to Joan
Fontaine that he doesn't crush women's hearts like grapes in a winepress at the end of A Damsel in Distress.
-
I'm not sure when this was taken, but it's Fred jamming
with George and Ira Gershwin.
-
Rehearsals on the set of Broadway Melody of 1940 with Fred and Eleanor Powell.
-
"Begin the Beguine" with Fred and Eleanor in Broadway Melody of 1940!
-
This is a cute picture of Fred Astaire with
his son. Of course, the master is teaching the young man a few
of his moves.
-
With Charles Butterworth, Paulette Goddard,
Artie Shaw, and Burgess Meredith, Fred and the others dance away in
the publicity picture from Second Chorus.
-
Now we're to the Rita Hayworth section of the Fred pictures. This
one is from You'll Never Get Rich.
I think that Rita looks absolutely beautiful here. Fred doesn't look
too bad himself.
-
Fred and Rita dancing, this time from a movie
poster (I cropped the rest of the image out; it wasn't as exciting as them
dancing).
-
French poster for Vous Ne Serez Jamais Riche,
better known here in the States as You'll Never Get Rich.
-
More Rita and Fred; they're just so cute!
from You Were Never Lovelier
-
Another publicity shot of Fred and Rita
from You Were Never Lovelier.
-
Dancing the, well, afternoon away: Fred and Rita.
-
More dancing, this time we can see the shadows.
Ooh, exciting!
-
Lobby card from You Were Never Lovelier.
-
Another lobby card from You Were Never Lovelier;
it's a great picture of them dancing.
-
Magazine cover of Rita and Fred from You'll
Never Get Rich.
-
Here's Fred and Bing in a publicity photo.
-
A fabulous publicity photo from The Sky's the
Limit, with Joan Leslie.
-
Here's a publicity picture from Blue
Skies. The other guy is Billy De Wolfe, and the ladies are Olga San Juan (who's adorable) and Joan Caulfield.
-
Check out Fred and Gene dancing to "The Babbit
and the Bromide" in Ziegfeld Follies.
-
This is another picture of the masters: Gene Kelly
and Fred Astaire.
-
Here's Fred and Judy Garland in a scene from
Easter
Parade.
-
Another picture from Easter Parade.
This shows Fred and Judy dancing.
-
This is from the "A Couple of Swells" number.
Looks quite interesting, I must say.
-
More Fred and Judy, this time a publicity shot
from the end of the movie.
-
Fred and Vera-Ellen in a vaudeville number fromThree Little Words.
-
Fred and Vera-Ellen twirling about
from Three Little Words. Wonderful.
-
This is defintely from Three Little Words. Here we see Red
Skelton, Keenan Wynn (who signed it), and Fred talking.
-
Here's the movie poster for Royal Wedding
with Jane Powell, a movie that has several very cool things like the number
"How Could You Believe Me When I Said I Love You When You Know I've Been
a Liar All My Life?" and Fred dancing on the ceiling.
-
One of my favorite pictures of Fred and Jane dancing in Royal Wedding.
-
Here's the number "How Could You Believe Me When
I Said I Love You When You Know I've Been a Liar All My Life?" with
Fred and Jane Powell in Royal Wedding.
-
Summer is grand when you're The Belle of New York. It's kinda hard to tell, but that is Vera-Ellen with Fred.
-
A scene from The Belle of New York
with Vera-Ellen.
-
Here's an autographed picture of Fred and Cyd Charisse
"dancing in the dark" from The Band Wagon.
-
This is from a very funny routine in The Band Wagon: "Triplets."
-
Here's a picture from the very final scene of The
Band Wagon: Oscar Levant, Cyd Charisse, Jack Buchanan, Fred Astaire,
and Nanette Fabray.
-
A promotional shot from the first Fred Astaire movie I ever bought: Funny
Face.
-
Another promo shot from Funny Face,
with Fred dancing with a wedding dress-clad Audrey Hepburn.
-
Here's Fred and Terry Moore, who plays Fred's niece, in Daddy Long Legs.
-
Lobby card from Silk Stockings
with Cyd Charisse.
-
Here's Fred dancing with Barrie Chase.
Oh, and he signed this, too.
-
A TV Guide cover of Fred Astaire
and Barrie Chase.
-
Here's Tab Hunter, Debbie Reynolds, and
Fred in The Pleasure of His Company.
-
A signed picture from the movie The Pleasure
of His Company. The woman is Lili Palmer, who played Fred's
ex-wife in the film.
-
This is Fred at age 77 dancing with Gene Kelly
at age 64 in That's Entertainment, Part II.
-
The cover picture for the Fred Astaire/Bing Crosby
album A Couple of Song and Dance Men.
So, that's Fred Astaire. I hope you liked what you saw here.
Oh, and I musn't forget this: a lot of the pictures here came from eBay,
an online auction house. I really don't have all of these autographed
pictures (although if I had the money...); I've just found a lot of pictures
that people are actaully getting rid of! Imagine that!
Anyway, that's my disclaimer. (In fact, the only picture here that
I have I got off of eBay!)
I hope to add more pictures, probably at another site or something. A few weeks ago I organized all of the Fred pictures I have on my hard drive, and I think it was something around 300. So, I'll get to working on that and will let you know.
Wanna look at some other, more informative Fred sites? Well, be
sure to visit my links page, where I've
included all of the worthy sites to visit. Otherwise, feel free to
check out the Gene Kelly pictures that I've got.
Thanks, and enjoy the show!
