Local council services

Every neighbourhood and every street has different needs.

The way we deal with the cleanliness, safety and improvement of your local environment reflects these different needs of your neighbourhood. This is the responsibility of Neighbourhood Services one of the council's departments.

We have a team of 13 Neighbourhood Response Managers. Each manager looks after two wards; your manager is David Orr.

The managers are in charge of the Neighbourhood Response Teams. There is a Neighbourhood Response Team for each ward and their job is to respond quickly to problems that soon make a place look untidy or make it feel unsafe. This team includes the Rapid Response staff  who do jobs like sweep the street, pick up litter and empty litter bins; remove small scale graffiti; make minor repairs to the footpath or street furniture; and cut back shrubs. They also deal with problems such as dead animals, blocked street drains and potholes.

The Neighbourhood Response Teams are permanently based in wards and are familiar with the local area, local issues and hot spots for problems such as littering or fly-tipping.

The Neighbourhood Response Managers make sure these teams are doing the jobs that are a priority for the local community. They work with local councillors, ward co-ordinators, tenants’ and residents’ groups and local people to find out what their priorities are. They also make sure that the teams keep an eye out for other work that may need doing and sort it out straight away.

The Neighbourhood Response Managers work closely with other Neighbourhood Services teams in the area such as grounds maintenance, and road and pavement work. If you have any concerns they are your first point of contact.

If you want to talk to the Neighbourhood Response Managers about the way we deliver services, you can contact them directly, email them or go along to ward committee meetings to meet them. If you want to report environmental problems, such as overhanging trees or graffiti, or ask for a bulky rubbish collection, you should contact Envirocall. Find out how well  Neighbourhood Services is doing in your ward.

Our streetlights are maintained by a PFI (Private Finance Initiative) project. We work with the police on removing abandoned vehicles.

Our ward priority plan (pdf 36kb) sets out the key environmental issues in the ward and what we are doing to tackle them.

There is a special budget for small scale environmental work within each ward. This is called the Ward Stewardship Budget. Find out the details of the environmental work going on in your ward (pdf 19kb).

There is also a programme of planned work for repairs and maintenance of roads and pavements (pdf 25kb). The rest of the work in the priority plan is looked after by the Neighbourhood Response Team.

Your Neighbourhood Wardens are involved in a number of activities in your ward. Two Wardens schemes operate in different parts of Elswick Ward:

  • The North Benwell Wardens cover the North Benwell Terraces, Gill Street and High Cross areas. They have 3 full-time staff and operate 6 days a week between 12.30pm and 9.00pm.
  • The New Deal Wardens cover part of the ward in the New Deal area. This team has 12 full-time staff and operates 6 days each week between 1.30pm and 10.00pm.

Ward Committees

Every ward has a Ward Committee made up of the three local councillors. The purpose of the Ward Committees is to identify and address local issues. They do this by consulting and working with local residents and businesses, agencies and voluntary and community sector organisations. The Ward Committees can also give grants to community groups.

The Ward Committees meet at least once every two months. The meetings are open to all members of the public. The dates for meetings in 2007 are:

Monday 14 May - Millin Centre, 162 Ellesmere Rd, North Benwell, 6.30pm.

Every ward also has a Ward Co-ordinator. The Ward Co-ordinator organises and publicises Ward Committee meetings, and deals with issues raised both at the meetings and elsewhere in the ward. They will be able to help you with transport to and from the meeting, childcare and information in a range of community languages.
