Leeds and Louisville became official partner cities on 24 March 2006 when the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Councillor William Hyde, and the Mayor of Louisville, Hon. Jerry E. Abramson signed a partnership agreement.

Louisville enjoys a number of connections with Leeds, such as the commercial partnership between the Frazier International History Museum in Louisville and the Royal Armouries at Leeds. Joint initiatives between the University of Louisville and the University of Leeds have been underway for over 20 years.

Sister Cities of Louisville is a voluntary organisation which co-ordinates all of Louisville's partnerships around the world. Sister Cities has established a special Leeds committee to help develop projects with Leeds. The co-chairs are Susan Gorsen and Ed Webb.

Louisville city

Sited at a key north-south, east-west crossroads, Louisville is home to the Kentucky Derby and the birthplace of boxer Mohammed Ali.

Louisville is the sixteenth largest city in the US and home to thoroughbred horse racing, bourbon, bluegrass music and the slugger baseball bat.

George Rogers Clark founded Louisville in 1778. The city was named after King Louis XVI of France in gratitude for his assistance during the Revolutionary War. It became a major commercial centre due to its position at the Falls of the Ohio River. The city was the first in the US to introduce the secret ballot.

Famous Louisvilleans include Colonel Harland Sanders, founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken; actors such as Tom Cruise, Johnny Depp, Sean Young and Victor Mature; journalist Hunter Thompson and the inventor of chewing gum, John Colgan.

Louisville economy

Louisville is home to a dynamic, diversified economy, which has outperformed the U.S. in job and income growth in the last decade. The community has developed an economic vision to capitalise on emerging opportunities in fast-growth niches where the community enjoys a competitive advantage, such as logistics and health/biomedicines, as well as in traditional strengths such as financial services and manufacturing.
