Leyla Gencer Passed Away
Leyla Gencer, one of the greatest sopranos of the 20th Century passed away on Saturday, May 10th in her house in Milan due to respiratory failure and cardiac arrest.
Leyla Gencer's funeral was held in Teatro alla Scala's San Babila Church in Milan. According to her will she will be cremated and her ashes will be spread over the Bosphorus in Ortaköy in Istanbul.
Following Gencer's will, İstanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts will reserve a space for "Leyla Gencer Museum" in its new centre. »»

One of the greatest sopranos of the 20th century, Leyla Gencer performed leading roles on the major opera stages of the world until concluding her singing career in 1985. Gencer was the artistic director of the Academy of the Teatro alla Scala where she was teaching opera interpretation.»»

The final and the awards ceremony of the IV. Leyla Gencer Voice Competition were held on Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at the Hagia Eirene Museum. From among the seven finalists, the first prize was won by Nino Machaidze of Georgia. »»
