Big changes are coming to DC Comics in September!

Ever since DC Comics announced that they were restarting the DC Universe after the conclusion of Flashpoint with a whole new slate of 52 new number one issues, the information has been coming in at a fast and furious pace. It's hard to keep track of all the new titles and creative teams that have been announced and so, as always, iFanboy is here to help!

Below you will find a definitive guide to all 52 new DC Comics titles that are set to begin in September (plus the one additional title that has been announced for 2012). Every time there is a new announcement we will cover it as we have all of the previous books and then we will add it to this master list.

Now you don't have to sit at home all day furiously refreshing your browser waiting for news about new DC titles (that's our job), you can just come here to see what DC Comics has to offer in September!

But Batman Inc. will be running along side everything else?

Posted by ericmci on 06/06/11 at 09:41 PM

great resource! thanks for doing this...

Posted by wallythegreenmonster on 06/06/11 at 09:42 PM

@ericmci  As noted in the introduction, Batman Inc. will debut in 2012. It's not part of September's 52 #1s.

Posted by PaulMontgomery (@fuzzytypewriter) on 06/06/11 at 09:44 PM

Brilliant.

So far, I'm going to try 16 of the 26 announced titles.

I may need a partime job...

Posted by stasisbal on 06/06/11 at 10:06 PM

Wasn't Superman #1, Superboy #1, and Animal Man #1 annouced, or is was it speculation and rumors?

@JosephDanielsTCR7  None of those have been officially announced yet.

My mistake, I thought it was.

Posted by Rbigley on 06/06/11 at 10:56 PM

So, I'm pretty new to noticing the creative teams on comics, especially in DC, so I was wondering if we are seeing any new names on any of these titles, or are they the same ol' DC crew just shuffled around a bit?

I'd really love to see some new writers on some of the titles coming out.  Obviously not some of the bigger names, but there has to be some room for new blood, right?  Marvel can't have bought EVERYONE.

Posted by Limitless on 06/06/11 at 11:05 PM

oh yes they can, and for very obvious reasons. Higher selling books mean more income for the creators. DC's well is pretty damn dry right now.

Posted by Cormac (@Cormacaroni) on 06/06/11 at 11:07 PM

Thanks dudes.

So far: Captain Atom, Hawkman, Batman: The Dark Knight, Batgirl and possibly Red Hood and the Outlaws.

Which is 5 more titles than I planned on getting, and about 5 times as many DC books as I buy right now.

Posted by player1 on 06/06/11 at 11:19 PM

Great idea, thanks for doing this!

I'm going to get 7/26 books so far which is a lot more then I expect for far. We still got another 26 to go!

Thanks for this, really helps keep things straight.

For me DC has always been the 2 or 3 bat-books that are working for me at the moment and usually one other thing that I'm trying out. From this list I have about 6 bat-books to audition and the one other thing is probably Justice League.

So far, despite all the changes I don't see DC getting more of my money each month long term. Same people with the same characters (more or less), how much better are the books really going to be?

Posted by Bootmobile (@Bootmobile) on 06/07/11 at 12:27 AM

Thanx for the list ifanboy, i will continue my daily hits here, glad to see the lineup so far. Like most i am most interested in seeing where Tim Drake lands in all of this, Out of the four he rates the highest in my Robin list, and I have been loving his growth in Red Robin!! I might get booed for this but totally stoked on Daniel still drawing the Bat, He does an awesome Dick bat, can't wait for his Bruce!!! This is starting to look better and better, hopefuly Dc does mess this up!!

Posted by miloloki on 06/07/11 at 12:32 AM

Doesn't mess this up!! my bad. Hope i dont jinx it now!!

Posted by miloloki on 06/07/11 at 12:33 AM

To save space... The only books I'm not really interested in are: Captain Atom, Hawkman, Detective, Dark Knight. Does not bode well for the wallet.

Posted by PraxJarvin (@praxjarvin) on 06/07/11 at 12:39 AM

So far I'm buying : Justice League, Wonder Woman and Batman...maybe I'll jump back on to Green Lantern.

Posted by CronyC on 06/07/11 at 01:04 AM

So far I'm getting: Justice League, Wonder Woman, Aqua Man, Green Lantern, Batman, Detective, Batman and Robin, and Nightwing.  I'll choose between Wonder Woman and Aqua Man after a few issues.  I'm excited.  My wallet is not.

Posted by oblivious247 on 06/07/11 at 01:09 AM

C'mon 38!!!!!!!!

Posted by ResurrectionFlan on 06/07/11 at 01:25 AM

Just:

JL,

Aquaman,

The Flash,

JLI,

DC Universe Presents (once in a while)

Batman (finally a decent team on the [supposed to be] main book)

and Batman Inc.

Actually, I'll be reading less DC books now that I think about it.

Oh! And Morrison's Superman. I'll give that a whirl.

Posted by NathanNicdao (@NathanNicdao) on 06/07/11 at 01:44 AM

No surprise I've been a little underwhelmed by a lot of the creative teams choices. Not everything is for everyone, of course, but I was hoping for a little more new blood -- either great steals from the competition or rising stars from the indies, etc.

Right now, the only books I'd definitely pre-order solely based on creative teams and titles: Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Batman, DC Presents, Batman, Inc. and maybe Batwoman (still concerned about the writing). The "definitely check it out" tier would include: Justice League, Firestorm, Aquaman, Birds of Prey (Swierczynski is a smart find, and it's the kind of move I hope to see more of).

AFter that -- I'll check out books a handful more... I'm curious about the take on Nightwing, The Red Hood, the JLI... but it's just a mild curiousity based on these reveals.

Posted by daccampo (@daccampo) on 06/07/11 at 02:01 AM

I was just about to ask for this.  Nice job on the preemption.  I am intrigued by several of the choices but I'm waiting to hear on the fates of Secret Six and Xombi before I make any decisions.

Posted by kmob181 on 06/07/11 at 02:18 AM

iFanboy= Tremendous!

Posted by SuperMoore on 06/07/11 at 02:23 AM

I expect to buy them all, but am most looking forward to Geoff Johns on JLA.  We've been deprived for far too long of a worthy flagship title.  I always figured Johns would eventually be writing the ongoing Aquaman, hooray.  I'm thrilled to see Catwoman getting her own book back, while I'm disappointed it's not Wil Pfeifer, I think Winnick will do a good job.  That Wonder Woman cover is absolutely hideous, and it's time for the classic costume to return.
Thanks for compiling this, Conor.

Posted by PhantomPhrenemy on 06/07/11 at 03:33 AM

half way through not very impressed.  i dig the top tier as almost everyone does.  but the 2nd tier just isnt there.  really hope they kick ass with the Superman.   For most of the other guys its just title swapping and renumbering.

Posted by seNoj1 on 06/07/11 at 04:07 AM

I keep hearing we are getting a Swamp Thing book will be interesting... If they can get Milligan writing or Si Spencer then especially so! Any idea whether Constantine will be getting his own spin-off book in this universe, that would be nice

Posted by origamikid on 06/07/11 at 04:36 AM

Well, even amongst all the fear surrounding the reboot, I think they are off to an excellent start. They have me buying/trying 10 books so far, 9 of which I had either lost interest in or weren't available.  I think I'll try GL again with the hope that after WOGL and Flashpoint is over, he'll be a simple old space cop again.

Posted by vadamowens on 06/07/11 at 05:13 AM

This is a great and useful thing.

Posted by RapidEyeMovement on 06/07/11 at 05:32 AM

This is great, a quick an easy site to track the new ones.

Any guesses for today's announcements?  I'm thinking maybe some team books (JSA, Teen Titans, Legion), as well as more of the single character books(i.e Power Girl, Jonah Hex, Booster Gold).

Posted by OwlyFan on 06/07/11 at 06:52 AM

Just an observation.  I picked up Weird Worlds #6 and it said several stories will be continued in 4 months (seems that would be September) in My Greatest Adventure #1.  I would consider this a semi-official announcement, and I'm betting this might be one of the unrevealed titles.

Posted by CrescentCityBlues on 06/07/11 at 07:28 AM

Wow.  Great work this list thing! :)

I'm actually thinking of giving the whole thing a chance.  A few creative choices are making me hesitate though.  This artists turned writer thing (Tony Daniel, Ethan Van Sciver, Francis Manapul, David Finch, J.H. Williams III) could be disastrous.  Also I'm not sure I want to read any book by dead-cat-as-a-weapon writer J.T. Krul. Oh, and Dan Jurgens and Scott Lobdell? I still have bad Superman and X-Men comics nightmares thanks to these two.

Posted by Francisco (@FMRsommelier) on 06/07/11 at 07:31 AM

Definitely getting Justice League, The Flash, Wonder Woman and Batman & Robin. Might be picking up Firestorm as well. I need to see what else is announced. I was hoping to keep my DC pulls down o about 5 a month, but with the list only half way done and me already at that number, it might be hard!

Great job doing this list! You guy are the best!

Posted by JohnVFerrigno (@johnvferrigno) on 06/07/11 at 07:59 AM

So out of curiosity, any clue how many of these books the iFanboy staff will be picking up? Or are you guys waiting for the total line-up to decide?

Posted by JohnVFerrigno (@johnvferrigno) on 06/07/11 at 08:00 AM

JEFF LEMIRE ANIMAL MAN

Posted by NathanNicdao (@NathanNicdao) on 06/07/11 at 08:02 AM

Paul - I understand it will be 2012 but doesn't it seem contrary to pick up with an existing storyline after the reboot?

It has been stated that after the reboot Bruce Wayne will be the only one wearing the Batsuit- but now we know in a few months after that Batman Inc. will be back.

Am I missing somehting or is that what will happen?

Posted by ericmci on 06/07/11 at 08:27 AM

Thanks guys.

Posted by ericwilder on 06/07/11 at 08:50 AM

Thank you for the list.  Really keeps the confusion down to a dull roar.  The biggest disappointment so far is Tony Daniel on Detective Comics and Savage Hawkman.  I really wanted to try out a Hawkman book.  I'll be trying all of the Green Lantern books, not sure if I'll stick with the Red Lanterns and the New Guardians.  I'll stick with Flash for the meantime, I was hoping there would be an announcement for the Flash Family book.  I will give Birds of Prey a chance because I like Duane Duane Swierczynski, give Batgirl, Batwoman, Catwoman and Wonder Woman a shot.

I think the books that I'm most excited about so far have to be JLA, Batman inc. and Aquaman.  I can only hope that the creative teams start to pick up or else it's business as usual and I'll might be getting fewer books than I was reading before the reboot.

Posted by ato220 (@ato220) on 06/07/11 at 08:51 AM

@ericmci

I think what you're missing is that nothing *from DC* has stated that this is a hard reboot that is rewriting ALL the current continuity. A lot of folks are still assuming things that haven't been said.

All the changes to the Bat titles seem highly likely to flow from current stories.

And of course, we've still got 3 issues of these titles before the relaunch. I think a lot of us have forgotten just how much story can get told in 60 pages!

Posted by KenOchalek on 06/07/11 at 09:03 AM

Very neat and precise. Thanks, guys.

Justice League Dark sounds interesting.  I was just thinking last night that it would be cool if DC had a magic book with a magic team, so it looks like this is as close as we'll get.

Posted by lifesend (@glug0) on 06/07/11 at 09:28 AM

I'm really hoping for some sort of Shazam related title to be announced. Not holding my breath though.

Posted by Radmobile on 06/07/11 at 09:31 AM

I have been looking for this all over the web.  I kept expecting Wikipedia to have a link nicely listing all the announced titles.  Congratulations for getting it done first.  Great work iFanboy!

Posted by yyzKyle on 06/07/11 at 09:44 AM

@Radmobile  I would love a Shazam book written by Johns, Lemire or Ordway. Or any shazam book for that matter.

Posted by WinTheWonderboy on 06/07/11 at 09:52 AM

KenO-  You make some good points.

I guess the announcement- " Bruce is the one and only Batman"  is referring to the duality of Dick/Bruce Batman.

And there is a lot of story to play out to setup whatvever is coming there.

Posted by ericmci on 06/07/11 at 10:05 AM

I have to say at first I wasn't that thrilled with the creative teams on some of the books but as the annoucements keep coming the teams just keep getting better and better.  The only thing i'm dissappinted about is the Hawkman creative team.  Would've loved to see Robinson writing Hawkman.

Posted by bgavino on 06/07/11 at 10:13 AM

Just read a piece with Milligan saying:

Current Hellblazer writer Peter Milligan, and DCU contributor, confirmed that, yes, John Constantine is returning to his old stomping grounds. But it’s not going to affect the Hellblazer book, or his portrayal therein (which, quite frankly, has been stellar of late). And while he couldn’t speak for the DC Universe portrayal, he understands that it will basically be the same character, the same person, but it won’t interfere with his Vertigo portrayal.

He said that he thinks the Hellblazer readership is sophisticated enough to know that there is a separation. In the same way as they can read an annual or a graphic novel featuring Constantine that isn’t in strict continuity with what’s happening in the monthly title.

So that might suggest that Vertigo's title continues doing what it does, and Milligan will also write him in JLA:Dark. That's cool. One of my favorite characters getting more exposure than he's ever gotten before.

Posted by Rbigley on 06/07/11 at 10:13 AM

Anyone else having trouble clicking on links on DC's main page?

Posted by ericmci on 06/07/11 at 10:26 AM

When they say that the new DCU will reflect the modern world and current times.... does that mean that Gotham and Metropolis etc. will get a legit location in the United States of America?

Posted by yyzKyle on 06/07/11 at 10:29 AM

Great resource thanks guys :)

Posted by peekay on 06/07/11 at 10:33 AM

I really do not know how I feel about the reboot. I just hope the keep Action comics with the numbering and all. It is quite a legacy to have that kind of issue depth. They must know what's best for us...it's their job right?

Agent of SHADE?  As in The Shade?  From Starman?!?!?!

Posted by SunnyvaleTrash on 06/07/11 at 10:52 AM

I don't think my wallet can handle this...

Posted by TheNextChampion on 06/07/11 at 11:06 AM

Ok, so that's a lot of open slots. What's missing?  Superman books (Superman, Action, Superboy, Supergirl). Booster Gold? Martian Manhunter? Legion? JSA?

JLA Dark? IM TOTALLY IN! Snyder on Swamp Thing? My prediction is that it's going to be the best run since the original Wein run in the 70s. Snyder is PERFECT for this kind of book!

Posted by brassai2003 on 06/07/11 at 11:26 AM

There's nothing xciting or new about these creative teams

Posted by nastysnow on 06/07/11 at 11:33 AM

JLA Dark sounds like a stupid name, but I can't really think of a better name.  I'm very, very intrigued by all the new Supernatural/Horror books. This could be delivering on DC's promise from years ago when Shadowpact first came on the scene and they were talking about redefining magic in the DCU.

Posted by redlibertyx on 06/07/11 at 11:42 AM

@redlibertyx  -any title with the suffix of "Dark" makes me think of all those Dark Chocolate candy lines that tend to get marketed towards women...maybe they need a 'Justice League--Sweet Tempations!' =)

@wallythegreenmonster That'd be a book with Black Canary, Catwoman, Starfire, and Poison Ivy in it. :)

@nastysnow  Geoff Johns and Jim Lee on JLA, Azzarello and Chiang on Wonder Woman, Snyder on Swampthing, and Lemrie on Animal man and Frankenstein!  I think those are pretty exciting and new.

Posted by bgavino on 06/07/11 at 11:57 AM

What about Jonah Hex? Is that series getting a reboot as well or are they keeping it the way it is?

Posted by SpiderTitan on 06/07/11 at 11:57 AM

RESSURECTIONMAN BITCHES!!!!!!!!!

Posted by SuperLuigi on 06/07/11 at 11:59 AM

@SpiderTitan

Josh retweeted this from Jimmy Palmiotti last night:

"The thing I have learned is that the people that run comic companies look at numbers and thats about it. Its a business, and I get that."

This is PURE SPECULATION since Palmiotti writes more than Jonah Hex, and I hope the title isn't getting the ax, but with all the brand new books getting announced, some of the current books aren't sticking around.

It'd be a shame, but I think Josh mentioned on the podcast this week that nearly 6 years of an awesome western title is quite a feat.

Posted by KenOchalek on 06/07/11 at 12:08 PM

A Vodoo book? I assume they are merging the Wildstorm universe with the DCU.  It could be interesting to see how The Authoirty (if there is is an Authoirty book) are handled in the DCU.

Posted by bgavino on 06/07/11 at 12:24 PM

An Abnett and Lanning Resurrection Man? Very unexpected - and very welcome!

Posted by Metamorphic on 06/07/11 at 12:35 PM

THe latest batch (I, vampire, Resurrection Man, Demon Knights) looks promising.

Hope we still get a Jonah Hex series, I love that book.

Palmiotti was being coy with a few people when mentioning a Hex book. I think there's going to be another Hex book, but maybe not the same as the one that's out.

Loved Milligan's SHADE the Changing Man back in the 90's, glad to see him returning to the character on a regular basis.

I'm seeing more of a game plan here, where titles can help support other titles. Deadman's new popularity mixes him in a team book, and Vertigo fans might be inclined to pick up JLA:Dark and Swamp Thing. You got a good chance for Aquaman being a success not only with Johns on board, but Johns is writing him in JLA with Lee doing art. Ditto for Wonder Woman. The line  seems integrated yet diverse at the same time.

Diverse characters, not only in gender, sexuality and race but in their overall concepts.

Posted by Rbigley on 06/07/11 at 01:39 PM

Maybe Hex could mosey on over to the Vertigo side of town. He's already halfway there pretty much.

So lets make September a national holiday!

Posted by Corbinator on 06/07/11 at 02:07 PM

You know what this looks like to me? It's looks like you went to sleep on a Tuesday and woke up on Wednesday to go to the comic shop and 5 years had passed by without you even realizing it.  The only difference between these books and the normal evolution of DC continuity seems to be it's all happening the same month and they're all renumbered as #1.  DC already did a similar thing a few years backs called "One Year Later", without the renumbering and old title revivals.

Posted by positronic on 06/07/11 at 02:11 PM

Awesome, thanks guys.

I've been mainly a Marvel guy, but I would be a liar if I said I'm not interested in some of this stuff.

Batman
Detective Comics
Batman and Robin
Batman: Dark Knight
Swamp Thing
Animal Man
Frankenstein, Agent of SHADE

Going to give those a shot at least.  Wanted a jumping on point for the Batbooks anyway, and I like the creative teams on all for the most part.  can't wait to see the rest.

Posted by Firevine on 06/07/11 at 02:14 PM

The more I think about it, the more I realize Jonah Hex is exactly in keeping with the (apparent) spirit of the relaunch. It's a book with a clear straightforward concept, consistently high quality storytelling, and doesn't get bogged down by any serious backstory or continuity making it an ideal entry point for a non-comic reader.

Given that, a Jonah Hex #1 in September seems like a no-brainer.

However, there's also the general sense that the western genre is not terribly popular, but I'm not so sure that's true (I like 'em!).

Posted by KenOchalek on 06/07/11 at 02:18 PM

And here I thought I'd be downsizing my DC pull list come "re-boot" time.  Hrrrmm... Whats wrong with me?  I was supposed to stay cynical and uninterested!!  Why am I smiling!?!?!  WHY AM I EXCITED!?!?!  NOOOO!!!!!

Posted by diebenny (@diebenny) on 06/07/11 at 02:28 PM

@KenOchalek  The book's monthly sales are frightening.

Posted by josh (@JAFlanagan) on 06/07/11 at 02:31 PM

Resurrection man looks awesome!

Posted by yyzKyle on 06/07/11 at 02:44 PM

I ok with the reboot as long as they don't mess with Red Robin. Tim is my Fav DC superhero and if they take him away from me I will not be happy.

Posted by MrDVD14 on 06/07/11 at 02:47 PM

@josh
But they're consistent. Year over year it's only lost a few readers.

Posted by NawidA (@NawidA) on 06/07/11 at 02:54 PM

I agree with NawidA even though the sales aren't high they are very consistent & the series has been almost universally praised by comic fans & critics alike. I just think that DC shouldn't aim so high with a series lkike Jonah Hex since superhero comics are much more popular than other comic genres especially westerns. In my opinion there really is no need to reboot the series because it has generally been new reader friendly by having (mostly) one & done issues instead of story arcs. I would just be so bummed out if they can the series, but if they reboot it with the same creators (which would be really redundant by the way) I would be fine with that. Hopefully one day, Ron Garney could draw an issue of Hex, that would be so awesome!

Posted by SpiderTitan on 06/07/11 at 03:00 PM

Get rid of my Supergirl, or my Zatanna and you're going to lose a reader entirely DC.

Posted by TheSquirrel on 06/07/11 at 03:04 PM

my thoughts while driving home listening to the podcast this past sunday

"i hope the guys make one of those red perma link articles detailing the entire dc reboot, itll probably happen after all the announcements"

way to be ahead of the game guys!

also 23 of 34 so far....my wallet is crying

Posted by ed209AF on 06/07/11 at 03:06 PM

I've seen some pencilled Darwyn Cooke pages featuring the Vigilante character floating around online, so maybe Hex will continue as part of a Western Tales anthology?

I also like the idea of moving Hex over to Vertigo, and I think I saw this question posed in another thread, but can anyone remember the last new ongoing from Vertigo?

Posted by KenOchalek on 06/07/11 at 03:10 PM

@KenOchalek  iZombie.

Posted by josh (@JAFlanagan) on 06/07/11 at 03:17 PM

@ KenOchalek

I beliebe the last ongoing from vertigo was iZombie. And thought I'm sure I'm forgetting others may have been Unwritten before that.

Posted by BizDaddy on 06/07/11 at 03:20 PM

@MrDVD14  We're gonna lose some characters. Tim is one of my favorites, and we may see him appear yet (Teen Titans?). My curiosity/concern is how they handle the ending or disapearance if that's the case. The next few months have the potential to be the best time to be reading DC.

Posted by nudebuddha (@otakucomics) on 06/07/11 at 03:39 PM

Oh yeah. So it seems like there should be some kind of Vertigo news coming soon, right? I mean, no new ongoings in about a year?

Another thought, I wonder what kind of announcements DC is going to have for con season, in light of the huge amount new projects being announced now.

Posted by KenOchalek on 06/07/11 at 03:43 PM

At least 24 of these sound interesting right off the bat.

Posted by TomO on 06/07/11 at 04:07 PM

getting issue 1 at least of:
Justice League
Wonder Woman
The Flash
Justice League International
DC Universe Presents
The Savage Hawkman
Batman
Detective Comics
Batman & Robin
Batwoman
Batgirl
Catwoman
Nightwing
Batwing
Swamp Thing
Animal Man
Justice League Dark
Demon Knights
Frankenstein, Agent of SHADE
Resurrection Man
Voodoo
BatmanIncorporated

Posted by GloriousGodfrey on 06/07/11 at 04:31 PM

What else are we expecting?

Action Comics
Adventure Comics
Superman
Supergirl
Superboy
Teen Titans
Justice Society
Legion

Even if all of these are confirmed, that's not even half the slots we currently have.

I hope DC will surprise us all with the next announcements.

Posted by Alexferrer on 06/07/11 at 05:26 PM

I'd bet on some more former Wildstorm characters (Grifter was heavily rumored), maybe some further expansion of the Superman family (Steel, a Lex Luthor book by Cornell?).

Like others, I'm still hoping for something featuring Tim Drake, a Jonah Hex book, and my personal fanboy wet-dream -- Snyder and Francavilla on Gotham Central.

Posted by KenOchalek on 06/07/11 at 05:31 PM

You know I was far from happy about the reboot, but it's just dawned on me that so far I want at least twice the amount of DC books than I currently buy... looks like it may very well work out for 'em... although I won't be able to afford all these books (I've no idea how I'll choose)

Batman
Batman & Robin
Batwoman
Green Lantern Corps
Swamp Thing
Animal Man
Justice League
Aquaman
...and Superman if it's written by Morrison (which is looking very likely)

How will I choose which books though... I can't afford all of them. I'll probably wait and get Batwoman in hardback actually, cos you know the art is gonna be beautiful.

I'll def be getting Animal Man, Swamp Tooth and Aquaman.. feel these characters will need sales more than GLC and the Batbooks

Posted by Phosphene (@140comicreviews) on 06/07/11 at 05:52 PM

Haha.  Swamp Tooth.

Posted by diebenny (@diebenny) on 06/07/11 at 05:56 PM

Of the latest announcements:

Swamp Thing, Justice League Dark, Frankenstein Agent of SHADE, Resurrection Man and Voodoo.

They doubled my interest in one announcement.

HoM/HoS-type DC books with characters I know and/or can get interested in? Hell, YES!

Posted by player1 on 06/07/11 at 06:50 PM

Resurrection Man is a superhero whose adventures were published by DC from 1997 to 1999, created by Andy LanningDan Abnett and Jackson Guice.

@PozrDu  I'm gonna go out on a limb and say no Power Girl. Not if they want clean and easy origins and continuity. If there is a Power Girl, it won't be the same one.

A new batch of titles are announced over at The Source.

(Something tells me the Tim Drake fans are not going to be entirely pleased)

Frickin' WOOT!!

Posted by Vidman on 06/08/11 at 10:25 AM

I'm pretty fascinated and excited about a ton of these. Does anybody else think that Action Comics #1 with Grant Morrison writing will be the last one they reveal? I've heard the costume is pretty different, so if they'd started with that they'd be on damage control out of the gate.

Posted by BanjoDuck on 06/08/11 at 10:56 AM

We're up to 39 / 52 and the titles seem to be getting weaker as we go along. I think that's why they're saving the Superman titles for the end, just so it doesn't end on a semi-obscure title.

Also, my Secret Six deatchwatch continues.

as someone who has only been reading DC for about 2 yrs id like some expert opinions.

Posted by ed209AF on 06/08/11 at 11:47 AM

@nudebuddha  I'll take the opposite side of that bet.  I think after the success of Palmiotti/Gray/Connor run, as well as the Winick run, I don't think they have to come back and tell her origin.  They can just move forward to tell good stories.  And, really, have any of these announcements screamed "clean and easy" origins?  My largest question regarding PG is a costume change?  Is wrong of me to hope they keep the boob-window?  Sure, give her pants, but leave the cleavage-cleft alone, I say.

Posted by ctrosejr on 06/08/11 at 11:49 AM

@ed209AF  We'll probably do something after all the announcements are made and we digest the information.

Not a single mention or rumor about the JSA so far...

Posted by MikefromGotham on 06/08/11 at 12:05 PM

@AceBathound  Exactly what I was thinking about... Where's Red Robin!? :(

Posted by KillTheG1mp on 06/08/11 at 12:06 PM

I'm thinking we'll see Power Girl with the Superman family announcements. What other titles/characters still on deathwatch or otherwise unaccounted for?

Secret Six
First Wave books (Doc Savage, The Spirit, etc)
Captain Marvel Family
THUNDER Agents
Zatanna
Xombi
Jonah Hex
Stephanie Brown
Wally West/Bart Allen (one of them is in Teen Titans, but it's not clear which one)

And I suppose we should remember that just because some of these characters aren't prominent in the promo art doesn't mean we won't see them (i.e. Stephanie Brown hanging out in Batgirl or Birds of Prey)

Posted by KenOchalek on 06/08/11 at 12:06 PM

@KenOchalek  First Wave was announced as ending a while back.

Posted by conor (@cskilpatrick) on 06/08/11 at 12:09 PM

I'd say that Xombi is gone. Sales are horrific.

Posted by NawidA (@NawidA) on 06/08/11 at 12:16 PM

If they are trying to modernize the DCU I don't see the wwII era characters from JSA making the cut. Stephanie brown I can see not making the cut. Honestly I don't see Wally making it either, though I really like the character. The marvel family I think gets rolled into one of the magic themed books.

Posted by MikefromGotham on 06/08/11 at 12:38 PM

So wasn't Phil Jimenez announced as DC exclusive this year?  I haven't seen him land a title yet.

Any other exclusive creators we haven't heard from yet?

We're seriously starting to run out of room.

Posted by diebenny (@diebenny) on 06/08/11 at 01:34 PM

Question - Do we know for sure that these 52 books are the only books DC will be putting out going forward?  What I mean to say is, has there been any announcement with regard to some of the the old series continuing in their original numbering or are these 52 it?

Posted by kmob181 on 06/08/11 at 01:40 PM

@ctrosejr  Good point. Although, at this point, I think trying to figure out what their reasoning is on these choices might be a fool's game.

Posted by nudebuddha (@otakucomics) on 06/08/11 at 01:51 PM

Gawd, I love checking out this thread every day...great info here.

Posted by SpeakerDad on 06/08/11 at 02:11 PM

@nudebuddha: I agree with you there, especially with this latest batch of announcements.  The longer the Teen Titans announcement sits with me, the more I think some characters might not make the cut.  Reading the copy from the Titans solicit, it makes it sound as if Tim Drake/Red Robin, Wonder Girl and Kid Flash have different origins.  Still no proof, mind you, but it's troubling.  My first reaction was, "Has the person writing the copy for Teen Titans ever actually read a Teen Titans book?"   It's got me going the other way, where I was once confident that these were entirely soft reboots.

@KenOchalek We haven't had any JSA announcements.  I would add that to your deathwatch.  In fact, are there any Earth-2 characters that are confirmed yet?

Posted by ctrosejr on 06/08/11 at 02:21 PM

So, 13 slots left as of today. I think (hope) there may still be some curveballs left.

Definite: Superman, Action Comics
Likely (based on rumors, etc.): Supergirl, Justice Society, Grifter, Batman Beyond.

I am still holding out hope for some of my oddball favorites, like Doom Patrol, Suicide Squad, and the Question.

Posted by daccampo (@daccampo) on 06/08/11 at 02:24 PM

I wonder how many of these announcements are only limited series?

I can see them doing a second wave of announcements in five or six months time after some of these that you know can't really sustain an ongoing have run their course.

Posted by TomO on 06/08/11 at 02:56 PM

I would love to see some wild choices, say New Gods and Shazam!.

I guess Adam Beechen tweeted today that we’re going to get a Batman Beyond #1.
The plan is to keep all storylines going, just start with a new #1.

Also another site said Titans is a reboot. Bleeding Cool says it'll have this be Superboy's first time he meets Wonder girl and Red Robin.

All these DC books and so far there's no sign of Dustin Nguyen. You'd think he'd be signed on to about half of them by now, and another quarter doing covers only.

Posted by Slockhart on 06/08/11 at 05:06 PM

It would be awesome if we got another Question series by Rucka, I know that's extremely wishful thinking though.

Give me a Luthor ongoiong written by Cornell, please DC.

Posted by AceBathound on 06/08/11 at 05:54 PM

Its rumored Johnson and Green are on Supergirl. They stopped me getting Batman/Superman after the stupid story where Kryptonite is spread all over the planet and resolved in the space of a page and proposing that Jor El and Thomas Wayne met. They would have to have an amazing artist to even consider S-Girl even after buying it for the full run so far.

Please let there be a Shazam! and/or Doctor Fate book! DC Magic really needs some love, they've been ignoring it/shortchanging it for so long! Hopefull Aquaman will return to his magic roots with Johns!

Justice League Dark and Demon Knights sound great, but there is no big-name magic user with their own book in this lineup (and I really hope it isn't Zatanna, her last series was crap)

Posted by Archimedes on 06/08/11 at 09:49 PM

Whoops, sorry, Conor! Here I was trying to read through the comments and tryin to figure it all out.

Posted by Jupiterman on 06/09/11 at 01:02 AM

@conor

I hadn't heard that they had cancelled the First Wave "universe" (of 2 ongoing titles); not that it's a big shock considering how they were selling.  Ironically, I was getting to like THE SPIRIT even more than the Darwyn Cooke version.  DOC SAVAGE was just awful (but the covers were awesome).

Didn't seem like they were very committed to this from the start.  A pulp universe set in the present time was just a mismatched idea.  I think they were going for a B:TAS vibe (mix of old and new tech with deco) but they didn't succeed in pulling it off.

So few characters, too -- when DC owns a weatlh of characters who would have made a good fit for the basic concept: Sandman (Wes Dodds), Crimson Avenger, Phantom Lady, etc.

Posted by positronic on 06/09/11 at 04:23 AM

OK, so First Wave is gone, CMX is gone, WildStorm is gone, what else?

I can't imagine Vertigo disappearing but will they be renumberd from #1?

What about DC Kids?  Ongoing numbering or is DC just giving up?

Posted by positronic on 06/09/11 at 04:45 AM

Oh goodie.  I still have 13 chances left for a JUSTICE LEGION ALPHA book by Morrison and Quitely.

Too bad it'll never happen, but it's still a better idea than about 6 or 8 of the titles they DID announce.

Posted by positronic on 06/09/11 at 05:37 AM

The Superman books need to be annouced, so that will eat into the remaining 13 spots. Superman, Action Comics, maybe PowerGirl, maybe a Supes Family book.  I'm betting a Booster Gold book shows up.  I'm stickign with my "JSA is a goner" thought.  This is getting interesting....

Posted by Kehinde on 06/09/11 at 11:12 AM

What's left to be announced?
Superman, Action Comics, Adventure Comics, Constantine, Zatanna, Powergirl, JSA, R.E.B.E.L.S?
They can't all make the cut

Posted by benisjamino on 06/09/11 at 11:35 AM

@benisjamino I don't see Adventure Comics getting a relaunch when we already have 2 Legion titles. Given that Constantine still has a Vertigo title (supposedly not being touched) and is in JL Dark I don't really see him getting a solo DCU title. R.E.B.E.L.S already died once, I don't think they're going to give it another shot.

Superman and Action are a given, so that leaves Zatanna Power Girl & JSA. My completely off the cuff opinion is that Zatanna has less than a 50/50 shot, Power Girl is about 50/50 and I would put the JSA at 60/40 - leaning towards coming back, but it wouldn't suprise me if they're left off the list.

....and the Secret Six deatchwatch continues.

Posted by usagi on 06/09/11 at 12:08 PM

With the original announcement I was excited to dig deeper into the DCU. I got to say, I'm a bit underwhelmed with the titles, talent, and costume updates.

Posted by Highball (@highball_) on 06/09/11 at 12:10 PM

Six titles left now? Looks like they're closing it out with Superman. Good show.

Superman, Action Comics, Superboy, Supergirl.... maybe a new Steel and/or Powergirl?

It's definitely been fun playing along with these announcements. Hope it turns into a healthy crop of pre-orders/sales for DC.

Posted by daccampo (@daccampo) on 06/09/11 at 12:15 PM

There had better be a JSA book. I will be supremely pissed if some of these stupid proposals get made and JSA is cut.

I hope we get some additional team books like JSA and Secret Six in the last batch, and it isn't all Superman.

Not looking good for Zatanna or Secret Six. Both would be great losses.

Posted by kennyg on 06/09/11 at 12:43 PM

Hoping for Power Girl and JSA to make the final cut.

Posted by CountAbyss on 06/09/11 at 12:46 PM

I pray that what I have seen as far as the stuff for Superman is hoax.  The new costume is terrible and I'm not thrilled about the new teams except for "Superman" #1.  DC has a chance to put dream teams on the flagship book and I think they missed the mark.  Guess we will see tomorrow.

Posted by TheLastSon21 (@JoeyButts21) on 06/09/11 at 01:30 PM

Word is that Batman Beyond will be one of those titles. Also, http://www.comicvine.com/news/new-superman-supergirl-and-superboy-redesign-images-revealed/143184/

Posted by nudebuddha (@otakucomics) on 06/09/11 at 02:02 PM

This list is not the only books DC will have come August is it?  I thought they said some people would be relatively untouched and essentially not rebooted.  I'm hoping Zatanna falls into this category as it would be a horrible loss as KennyG said.

Posted by TheSquirrel on 06/09/11 at 02:14 PM

Side note: I forgot Zatanna was in JL Dark. Do you think that increases or decreases the chance of her solo book surviving ?

Posted by usagi on 06/09/11 at 02:43 PM

@TheSquirrel  This is the new DCU line-up. If any DCU book comes out in August that's not on this list it'll only be because it's late.

Posted by conor (@cskilpatrick) on 06/09/11 at 02:47 PM

I hope the remaining 5 books are Superman-related titles and one surprise from Johns & Lee this weekend.
Superman, Action, Superboy, Supergirl, Power Girl, and how about a villain-centric book.

@CHERP0 He's going to be working on Snapshot with Andy Diggle, which has no US publisher as of yet.

Posted by josh (@JAFlanagan) on 06/09/11 at 03:10 PM

Jeez it looks like there's about to be a serious influx of current DC talent at Marvel since no way can all the MIA artists be in these last six.  My bet...Action, Superman, Supergirl, Superboy, JSA, and a wildcard.  Doubt either Zatana or Power Girl survives.

Posted by gandalf25 on 06/09/11 at 03:12 PM

I still there won't be a Power Girl book. I'm thinking, based on rumors, it will be Batman Beyond, Superman, Action, Supergirl, Superboy, and JSA or some JSA like team book.

Posted by nudebuddha (@otakucomics) on 06/09/11 at 03:12 PM

Watchmen 2 is book 52.
Just wait for the announcment this weekend.
There's a reason Multiversity is no where to be seen.
DC has advised retailers to stock up on Watchmen in this weeks latest mailout.
Connect the dots.
This industry needs Watchmen 2.
We must move past the British Invasion of the 80's.
If not now, when?
Some characters are bigger than there creators...

Posted by Stephenspine on 06/09/11 at 03:16 PM

With this day & date digital I'm curious if DC ever considered consolidating titles.

I mean why not just publish one Superman book but make it... super-sized. Imagine an Action Comics with stories 4 stories (2 Supermans, 1 Superboy, 1 Supergirl).

Or make Action Comics a weekly with 1 primary Superman story and an alternating Superboy/girl back-up.

Posted by Smasher on 06/09/11 at 03:21 PM

Hey forgive me if this has already been answered, but in all the where is Tim talk earlier in the week, I forgot to ask...have we seen Wally West anywhere or are we assuming Kid Flash in the Teen Titans is a de-aged Wally and Bart's gone?....Ah the things that weigh on my mind....is someone slipping meds under Ron's door?

Posted by gandalf25 on 06/09/11 at 03:21 PM

@Stephenspine

I was thinking about this as well.  Watchmen would be a barnstormer of an announcement.
Anything's possible. Perhaps an Elseworlds title? Neil Gaiman to write a Death on-going?

Posted by Smasher on 06/09/11 at 03:39 PM

With today's announcements I am up to.....11 books! Which is a hell of a lot more then I'd ever expect to buy.....I might need to ask my boss for a raise. Or at least ask when I find a job.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 06/09/11 at 03:42 PM

@Smasher  Death ongoing wouldn't be too far fetched since we saw her in Action a few months back. But I am sticking with my predictions.

Posted by nudebuddha (@otakucomics) on 06/09/11 at 03:48 PM

So Deathstroke looks like a knight?  hmmm.  I have no interest in OMAC, but will get the Sgt Rock and the Western title.  And I've never read anything with GRifter, so i have no interest really there either.

Posted by MikefromGotham on 06/09/11 at 03:56 PM

6 books left. Leaked artwork/info for Superman, Supergirl and Superboy just got out there. I'm sure Action Comics will also be announced. That's 4. Leaving 2 left. JSA could be one and Batman Beyond another.  Beecham tweeted the book will survive.

Damn, no New Gods. No Powergirl, no Adam Strange, no Doom Patrol, nothing for say a Plastic Man, Metamorpho, Creeper, Question or various other characters that could be cool with the right creative team. But all in all a very diverse line up. Horror/supernatural/war/wildstorm/westerns/superhero/and tons of Batman.

Posted by Rbigley on 06/09/11 at 03:57 PM

CBR just posted Blue Beetle and then there were 5....

Posted by gandalf25 on 06/09/11 at 03:58 PM

It appears that everything is now slanted toward the gritty/edgy approach.  I fear that Jimmy Olsen will be Jimmye Olsen and there will be a Clark/Lois/Jimmye triangle.  Superboy will become Emo Boy.  Supergirl will become SuperGothGirl and have facial piercings.

Wishes:  JSA, the original Infinity Inc., Global Guardians

Posted by educatexan on 06/09/11 at 04:06 PM

@conor
Thanks for the info, and the list.

Fingers crossed for Zatanna....but we'll see

To everyone getting your hopes all up for a Powergirl book, I think we've got a chance at Kara or power-girl, but i doubt DC is going to launch this thing with both of them.

Posted by TheSquirrel on 06/09/11 at 04:10 PM

Blue Beetle! Forgot about that possibility. I think we have it then. Unless. . .  Maybe there will only be one Superman title instead of Superman and Action, which would leave one spot still open.

Posted by nudebuddha (@otakucomics) on 06/09/11 at 04:10 PM

When the 52 books were first announced, I figured that just about every current DC superhero was going to get their own book. And when I saw a Mr. Terrific book in the first batch, I very much assumed this. And now we're 6 books out and there are a TON of names left without books. We got a whole lot more "diverse" books than I was expecting.

I wonder how many more established books like Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, SHAZAM, The Spirit, Secret Six, and Doom Patrol might possibly be held back for down the road if/when some of these more fringe books like Batwing don't sell.

The sad thing to me is that 4 of the books I was arguably most enjoying over the past year all met their maker or have yet to show up. Batgirl (Stephanie Brown version), Red Robin, Zatanna, and Power Girl. Now Power Girl could very easily be in this last seemingly Superman themed bunch. But as of this point, nothing. I know a shake up was in order for most everything. But it's still a tad disappointing. Especially given some of the more oddball/uninspiring choices.

And where's Renee Montoya?! Rucka must have exclusivity on the character or something.

Posted by j206 (@206jordan) on 06/09/11 at 04:10 PM

So with the Blue Beetle announced, that's 5 left... and from teh leaked Superman covers, we can reasonable assume that four of those are as rumored: Action, Superman, Supergirl, Superboy.

So what's the LAST book? Morrison's Multiversity? SHAZAM? Powergirl? Can I still hope for The Question? ;)

Posted by daccampo (@daccampo) on 06/09/11 at 04:14 PM

Ugh - Newsarama just posted another title....'Suicide Squad', featuring King Shark, Deadshot and....Harley Quinn. (?). Another piece of promo art that looks straight out of the 90's and I'm assuming this is the last nail in the Secret Six coffin. Likewise for Gotham Sirens if anyone's still carrying that torch.

Posted by usagi on 06/09/11 at 04:20 PM

Daccampo beat me too it but Blue Beetle and Suicide Squad was announced....But I don't know who the team is for both.

Posted by TheNextChampion on 06/09/11 at 04:20 PM

@j206  I'm sure some of these books won't take off, and based on sales, editorial will go back to the catalog, take some pitches, and try again. That's the thing about DC and Marvel... they own these vast characters catalogs, and it only makes sense that they'd continually try to dust them off to see what sticks.

I know Powergirl is a series that a lot of people like, but if I were DC, I would probably focus on Supergirl -- I know PG is a great character, but from a marketing standpoint, she's a little redundant/more convoluted than Supergirl... So I don't fault 'em for choosing SG.

Hey - I guess PG could still lead a JSA book. Maybe that's the final book. Maybe it's an Earth-2 JSA book with PG and the Huntress and some of the the Infinity Inc characters!

Posted by daccampo (@daccampo) on 06/09/11 at 04:20 PM

Based on some farely recent tweets, I tihnk Suicide Squad is Gail Simone.

Posted by nudebuddha (@otakucomics) on 06/09/11 at 04:22 PM

I guess scratch Blue Beetle from my list of reserves. Ha.

Good choice. Especially if DC is trying to diversify it's heroes with books like African Batman and Mr Terrific. Jaime Reyes fits that role a whole lot better, IMO.

@daccampo - I'm with you on Power Girl and The Question. Sadly, I'm not all too hopeful.

Posted by j206 (@206jordan) on 06/09/11 at 04:22 PM

Oh, yes! Suicide Squad? Oh that's a nice treat! That was one of my left-field choices! A good one, as it's the only book to really focus on villains. Great way to round out the lineup.

So, I guess that's it. Tomorrow, we finish it off with the Superman Family.

Posted by daccampo (@daccampo) on 06/09/11 at 04:23 PM

If Blue Beetle and Suicide Squad are #'s 47 & 48, that leaves 4 spots....for Superman, Action, Supergirl, Superboy, Power Girl and (supposedly) Batman Beyond. I'm assuming Power Girl is getting bumped here - if nothing else I was waiting to see the PG costume redesign, I was assuming her shoulder plate would get big spikes.

Posted by usagi on 06/09/11 at 04:23 PM

Seems like the last four titles will all be Superman-related. Bleeding Cool has confirmed that we'll get Superman (by George Perez), Supergirl, and Superboy. Seems like the last one one has to be Morrison's Superman book (presumably Action Comics).

That leaves us without a JSA or Marvel-family book. I was kinda hoping for a New Gods title (although it seems unlike pre-Multiversity).

On another note, isn't it weird to not see Paul Dini on anything?

Posted by Kirkerson on 06/09/11 at 04:25 PM

Never mind my Gail Simone call on Suicide Squad. Team is Adam Glass and Marco Rudy

Posted by nudebuddha (@otakucomics) on 06/09/11 at 04:25 PM

@nudebuddha Newsarama says the Suicide Squad team is Adam Glass / Marco Rudy

Posted by usagi on 06/09/11 at 04:25 PM

@daccampo  yup, I'm also worried how this entire revamp/reboot/relaunch will affect Morrison's MULTIVERSITY. I hope that still gets published :)

Posted by BudjetteTan (@Budjette) on 06/09/11 at 04:26 PM

I hate how this commenting system doesn't refresh other new comments when you post. Always leaves me missing posts until after I posted something similar and redundant. :P

@daccampo - You make a good point regarding Power Girl/ Supergirl. I still much prefer Power Girl. But I can see it from a mainstream level.

Also on a mainstream level, I could understand if they choose to do away with the JSA. Not that I have any issues with it, and I know a lot of comic fans love it. But it's not exactly the most new reader friendly. Trying to figure out why their was old men versions of The Flash & Green Lantern running around in the DCU was one of the more confusing things for me when I first started reading DC. It took me a while to make sense of the difference between the JLA and JSA. So I could totally see if DC felt the need to unmuddy the waters for it's relaunch and intended new readers. I wonder if the multiverse concept is even going to exist?

Posted by j206 (@206jordan) on 06/09/11 at 04:30 PM

up to eight titles so far, which is six more DC titles then i was pulling before

Posted by Patman2 on 06/09/11 at 04:40 PM

No Paul Dini, Dustin Nguyen, Bryan Q. Miller, Frasier Irving, or Jock. And JT Krul gets two books? Not to mention all the artists writing their own books. Not sure what the deal is here. I know Josh said Jock is working on a book with Andy Diggle. But the rest? For DC's sake, I sure hope Marvel didn't jump in and poach some of those guys in the midst of this re-jiggering. Their talent pool is already shallow enough as it is.

Posted by j206 (@206jordan) on 06/09/11 at 04:40 PM

@j206  I was trying to say this same thing on Twitter. Notice there's not a lot of reverence for LEGACY in the Reboot. It's more about, well, making things modern based on what's worked before.

And like you, I can't blame DC for this angle. I wouldn't focus on the JSA either, if I was in charge. Even though it's a rich part of DC's history, it's a little harder to get into from a ground floor level. Johns tried with the "training a new generation of heroes" angle, but while that's an interesting story angle, I don't think it's totally inviting to new readers and a younger demographic. I think books like Suicide Squad or Stormwatch have a better chance of cultivating a fan base while maintaining a distinct identity from the Justice League and the Teen Titans.

Posted by daccampo (@daccampo) on 06/09/11 at 04:41 PM

Maybe I missed this in the flurry of articles about the #1s, but do we know if DC is going to put out any books beyond the 52 (ie, non-renumbered titles)?

Posted by Kirkerson on 06/09/11 at 04:56 PM

@Kirkerson  This is exactly what I was thinking.  Do we know if this is all of the upcoming ongoings, or like Batman Inc., will there be more to come?  I will be very sad if there is no JSA, Power Girl, and Secret Six in the new DCU.

Posted by Kaylon on 06/09/11 at 04:58 PM

Let me know when we get to the Tiny Titans reboot.  AW YEAH!

Posted by powerdad (@jeffrey_b) on 06/09/11 at 04:59 PM

@j206

I'm wondering if some of these guys are working on the NEXT batch of new books. DC has to know that not all of the new 52 titles are going to be hits (and some of them might be limited series anyway), but I could see them being committed to always having 52 DCU titles out there. There may be books in the works ready to fill those slots.

Or they're part of the rotating teams on DCU Presents.

Alternately, they might be on some special projects that haven't been announced yet. DC's going to have to have some new things to announce during Con Season, right? Maybe more Year One OGNs?

Posted by KenOchalek on 06/09/11 at 05:05 PM

I will be getting 9 out of the possible 48 titles and three of those nine I'm kind of iffy on.

Posted by CougarclawsROB on 06/09/11 at 05:06 PM

@KenOchalec That's a great point. This doesn't take in to account potential minis and OGNs (for instance, we know Paul Dini is doing a Zatana OGN). I can also see them launching more titles eventually. I won't be at SDCC but I can't wait to listen to how their panels go.

Posted by Kirkerson on 06/09/11 at 05:10 PM

No Powergirl or JSA. Ugh. That Superboy cover, cool looking but if he's a robot or cyborg not so.

Posted by Rbigley on 06/09/11 at 05:22 PM

I am square against this reboot, but there are some interesting titles on there. Red Lanterns will be fun, but I just wonder what will happen to Kyle in the GL reboot. I think they might be cutting their own throats with this though.

Posted by BulgarianBullwhip on 06/09/11 at 05:37 PM

@BulgarianBullwhip  Kyle is one of the stars of Green Lantern: The New Guardians.

Posted by conor (@cskilpatrick) on 06/09/11 at 05:41 PM

@Conor, @Ron, @Josh: After all of the announcements are final, can we have a post where we all come to mourn the lost titles?  A place where we can remember the good times?

Posted by ctrosejr on 06/09/11 at 05:45 PM

@KenOchalek  Agreed. If some of these make it past 12 issues, I will be surprised.

Wonder if the JSA will be in the Mr. Terrific book?

Posted by kennyg on 06/09/11 at 05:54 PM

@Kaylon  It's not like they are never going to change anything ever again. They probably plan on putting these books out and then see how it goes before adding and subtracting to and from the mix down the line. Also, just because a character doesn't have their own book right now, doesn't mean we won't see them in the pages of one of these.

Posted by nudebuddha (@otakucomics) on 06/09/11 at 05:57 PM

Presuming there's nothing announced over the next day or so that completely rocks our socks, let's look ahead to August 2012 and predict which titles will be around:

The Def:
Justice League Wonder Woman Aquaman The Flash Green Arrow DC Universe Presents
Green Lantern Green Lantern Corps Red Lanterns Batman Detective Comics Batman & Robin
Batman: The Dark Knight Batwoman Batgirl Catwoman Nightwing Red Hood and The Outlaws
Superman Supergirl Superboy Action Comics (21)

The Prob:
Batgirl Birds of Prey The Fury of Firestorm Justice League International
Green Lantern: The New Guardians Batwing Swamp Thing Legion of Superheroes Teen Titans
Static Shock Stormwatch Deathstroke Grifter Blue Beetle (14)

The Meh:
Mister Terrific Hawk & Dove Captain Atom The Savage Hawkman Animal Man Justice League Dark
Demon Knights Resurrection Man Voodoo Legion Lost Blackhawks Sgt. Rock and the Men of War
All-Star Westerns Suicide Squad Frankenstein, Agent of SHADE I, Vampire Omac (17)

Obviously this is just one fanboy's opinion.

Thanks again for setting up this page, @Conor & Co.  Made for an exciting week.

Posted by Smasher on 06/09/11 at 06:02 PM

These are the ones I either don't get or don't see making it very long:

Mister Terrific - unless there's a JSA element, I don't see this catching on. Not a big enough character to carry his own book.
Captain Atom - Not a big enough character to carry his own book.
Batwing - I am puzzled by this. Winnick is good, but how much does he know about Africa? I don't see how this can work.
Voodoo - Nice Wildstorm wasn't obliterated, but this seems like an uphill battle. Marz is good, though.
Hawk & Dove - Waste of paper. The picked this over a JSA book?
Omac - Waste of paper. The picked this over a JSA book?
Legion Lost - One Legion book is enough. Limited appeal.
The Savage Hawkman - Tony Daniel writing? No thanks.
Deathstroke - Limited appeal. Not a big enough character to carry his own book.

Detective will probably survive Daniel because it is Batman, or he will be replaced.

Posted by kennyg on 06/09/11 at 06:05 PM

With the JSA title looking very doubtful, I wonder how the current series will wrap up.

Posted by MikefromGotham on 06/09/11 at 06:05 PM

Looks like the DC properties missing from the reboot are (with 4 Superman books coming tomorrow):
- Justice Society
- Adventure Comics
- SHAZAM!
- Atom
- Power Girl (may just be gone all together)
- Question
- Doom Patrol
- Secret Six
- Spectre
- Sandman
- Starman
- Gotham Central L
- Amethyst (is referenced in Flashpoint)
- WildC.A.T.S.
- Gen13
- T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents
- Red Circle properties aka Shield/Web/Fly
Milestone properties other than Static Shock aka Xombi/Hardware/Icon/Blood Syndicate/Shadow Cabinet
- First Wave characters aka Spirit/Doc Savage/Justice Inc.
- Quality Comics properties (other than Blackhawks) aka Plastic Man/Freedom Fighters/Ray/Manhunter
- Zatana (is in Justice League Dark)
- Cyborg (is in Justice League though)
- Martian Manhunter (is in Stormwatch)
- Deadman (DC Presents)
- Superman Family (Lois Lane/Jimmy Olsen)
- Superman/Batman or World's Finest (Yay!)
- DC Cosmic stuff (Comet, Adam Strange, Lobo, Fourth World, R.E.B.E.L.S.)

Man! I am so damn excited! I'm going to work overtime, so that I can buy all 52 of these! Awesome!

Posted by teewillis1981 on 06/09/11 at 06:16 PM

not a bad, list. Im just glad that Tim Drake didnt disapear, even if he is just in Teen titans (so far) His new Red Robin costume looks pretty cool. A little bit of Falcon in it. Now if they can just find a good place for Stephanie and have Miller keep writting her, ill be set!

Posted by KalEl6478 on 06/09/11 at 06:23 PM

Just so you guys know, you have two (2) number 31s. There are only three spots left. I would assume these are Superman, Action and Supergirl.

Posted by quintessential on 06/09/11 at 06:47 PM

@quintessential  But no 32! Fixing. The count is still correct. Thanks.

Posted by josh (@JAFlanagan) on 06/09/11 at 06:53 PM

My guesses for the last 4 are Superman, Supergirl, Superboy and either another Super book or JSA.

RIP Secret Six : (

Worst thing about this reboot.

Posted by Phosphene (@140comicreviews) on 06/09/11 at 06:58 PM

But number 32, we still have the correct number of slots.

Posted by MikefromGotham on 06/09/11 at 06:59 PM

I'm gonna say the last 4 are Superman, Supergirl, Power Girl and JSA. Pretty much what the above poster said, with the difference that I think Superboy won't get a title and Power Girl will.

Posted by player1 on 06/09/11 at 07:01 PM

The last 4 are action comics, superman, Supergirl, and superboy I guess

Batman gets 11 books and superman gets 4 that does not sound right.

Posted by redcracker on 06/09/11 at 07:07 PM

So apparently my counting and copy-editing skills are poor.  All that schooingl for nothing.

Posted by quintessential on 06/09/11 at 07:08 PM

Goodbye Zatanna, Power Girl and JSA. The last remaining four are going to be Superman, Action Comics, Superboy and Supergirl. There are already covers for 3 of them floating around the internet. I'm brutally dissapointed that two of the DC comics that I've been really enjoying have been abruptly cancelled for no reason. Zatanna at least could work easily post reboot but I suppose JSA and Power Girl were too 'complicated' and 'convoluted' to work in a simplified and streamlined DCU.

Posted by Devastron on 06/09/11 at 07:14 PM

No Paul Dini . . .

Posted by ScorpionMasada on 06/09/11 at 07:22 PM

I like the digital day and date. I am dropping all marvel for this and the fresh start is cool.
I was getting three dc titles before not counting events.
Booster gold
Justice league generation lost
Powergirl
Looks like I lost all but one title

I am going to get these for sure
JLI (wish Powergirl was on the team)
Blue beetle (wish it could have been a booster gold and blue beetle buddy time cop book)

Going to try
All-star westerns
Jla
Teen titans
Storm watch
Fury of firestorm
Swamp thing
Grifter
Deathstroke
All four superman books

Curious what happened to
Powergirl
Wally west flash and impulse
Jsa
Titans
Zatana

Posted by redcracker on 06/09/11 at 07:34 PM

DiDio on OMAC?  I can't do it.  Although I won't read it, I'm glad they're keeping Palmiotti and Gray writing a Jonah Hex book, and I will probably pass on Sgt. Rock.  I'm glad to see them all getting a shot, they're just not my thing.
Otherwise I think I'm on for just about everything so far.  This looks pretty exciting!
@TheLastSon21:  How can you not be on board for Johns writing Justice League?  That's the best news since 1997.
@kennyg:  JSA needs a kick in the pants, it's been kind of a mess since Geoff Johns left.  I hope it gets a chance.

Posted by PhantomPhrenemy on 06/09/11 at 07:40 PM

Please please please let there be a new Vic Sage!

Posted by JNewcomb on 06/09/11 at 08:21 PM

I forgot about Action. Maybe only Superman and Action, with Action being something like DCU Presents with Supergirl, Superboy, and Power Girl rotating?

Posted by nick0606 on 06/09/11 at 09:44 PM

@devastron - Calm down, dude! ALL those characters will be back eventually, just wait and see. So many of these announced books are going to fail, DC will turn to other characters in due course.  And if they succeed, well, there will be more launches.

Posted by Cormac (@Cormacaroni) on 06/09/11 at 09:53 PM

Zatanna and Power Girl have been so good and it will be a shame for them to not have stand-alones.

You guys should use the mechanic you have for weekly pulls and give everyone a chance to "pull" the titles that sound the most interesting to them. Just as a standalone thing.

Dan Jurgens & Aaron Lopresti
Geoff Jones & Ivan Reis
Geoff Jones & Doug Mahnke
Scott Snyder & Greg Capullo

I guess we will get Action Comics by Grant Morrison and JG Jones? (Wouldn't be surprised if its only for two issues)

Superman by George Perez

Supergirl by Amanda Conner

I guess JSA by James Robinson

Although could we get a New Gods book?

Posted by tomdpimp on 06/09/11 at 11:46 PM

Just read an interview with Scott Snyder (here: http://www.newsarama.com/comics/dcnu-scott-snyder-batman-relaunch-110609.html) that basically says every change is going to be explained in-story and no continuity will be "lost." Quote from Snyder: "But, if you have been a long-time Batman fan, we have no interest in wiping away his history, because we love it as much as you do." So... this isn't really a "reboot" as much as it is a company-wide renumbering. (And integration of Vertigo and Wildstorm into the DCU, I suppose.)

Posted by LucasEwalt on 06/10/11 at 02:05 AM

Wouldn't be shocked if we saw Deathstroke and Shade the Changing Man, given their prominence in Flashpoint. New Gods could be great as a maxi-series so you know, people can die and stuff can get wrapped up. Not really interested in an ongoing. Morrison or bust though.

Posted by Cormac (@Cormacaroni) on 06/10/11 at 02:20 AM

@Nate  Prepare to be pissed off I fear. :(

Posted by electricv01 (@electricv01) on 06/10/11 at 02:27 AM

I have to say I was beginning to buy into DC's Bob Wayne assurance that "it's NOT a reboot", but after seeing the cover previews for the Superman family books and STORMWATCH featuring the new-look Apollo, Midnighter and Martian Manhunter, I'm back to thinking it really IS a reboot.

Posted by positronic on 06/10/11 at 02:31 AM

@ScorpionMasada  No lots of people.  I'm actually putting together a list here.  http://electricv01.tumblr.com/post/6377684002/list-of-creators-missing-from-the-dc-relaunch

Posted by electricv01 (@electricv01) on 06/10/11 at 02:33 AM

So I guess the missing four are SUPERMAN, ACTION COMICS, SUPERGIRL and SUPERBOY, then.  Surprisingly no SUPERMAN-BATMAN book.

Posted by positronic on 06/10/11 at 02:35 AM

I hope it is a reboot. Let's face it the hardcore comic readers are not making the company any money. A reboot will make it easier for people to get into the books especially with the new market of digital.

The 70 plus years of continuity (that is a lot for new readers), the comic shop (that are not every where), and diamond (that has a strangle hold on distribution) have sales dropping every year.

Fresh start and more options like digital is the way to go. I feel

Action Comics #1 by Grant Morrison and Rags Morales

All-Star Western #1 (starring Jonah Hex) by Jimmy Palmiotti, Justin Grey and Meridat

Animal Man #1 by Jeff Lemire, Travel Foreman and Dan Green

Aquaman #1 by Geoff Johns and Ivan Reis

Batwoman #1 by J.H. Williams III, Haden Blackman and Amy Reeder

Frankenstein: Agent Of SHADE #1 by Jeff Lemire and Alberto Ponticelli

Green Lantern #1 by Geoff Johns, Doug Mahnke and Christian Alamy

Green Lantern Corps #1 by Peter J. Tomasi, Fernando Pasarin and Scott Hanna

Green Lanterns: New Guardians #1 by Tony Bedard, Tyler Kirkham and Batt

Legion of Superheroes #1 by Paul Levitz and Francis Portela

Nightwing #1 by Kyle Higgins and Eddy Barrows

Resurrection Man #1 by Dan Abnett, Andy Lanning and Fernando Dagnino

Stormwatch #1 by Paul Cornell and Miguel Sepulveda.

Superman #1 by George Pérez

Swamp Thing #1 by Scott Snyder and Yanick Paquette

Of those, I'd guess maybe half-a-dozen I'd probably wind up dropping eventually and probably add a few that I'm not listing after I actually see/read them.

So let's say, final tally about 13 titles (25% of the entire output) a month. About half of what I'm getting now.

Wow, I hate that this thing doesn't let you edit your posts.  I obviously need to use extreme caution when cutting and pasting here.

Glad they're doing the 'reboot' myself, even though I probably just lost Power Girl and I'm no longer interested in picking up Batgirl. If they hadn't, I likely would not have started reading most of the comics because I like getting in on the ground floor, or at least not being behind so much that it would cost too much to get the back-issues.

For me, the reboot means I go from reading one DC title to looking at picking up six of the #1's as subscriptions, and possibly more depending on reviews of the others.

Planning on:
    Red Hood and the Outlaws
    Satic Shock
    Teen Titans
    Blackhawks
    Suicide Squad
Supergirl (filling in for my Power Girl loss?)

Posted by wiski on 06/10/11 at 06:43 AM

@Evangelion11  The initial number ones are going to be 3.99 for the print issue, 4.99 for print+digital copy.

DC has said that they will drop back down to 2.99 after the 1st month of number ones.

not sure how digital is going to work yet.

No Powergirl
No Zatanna
No Superman Batman

instead we have:
Mr. Terrific (beware my BALLS)
Omac
Ressurrection Man
and fuckin Hawk and Dove.... I mean really?

These are all mini worthy characters but I can't imagine DC actually believes people are going to sign on for a year of mystical ball dude, or really angry guy hangs out with not so angry girl.

But what is happening to the Vertigo universe and things like Fables now?

Posted by TheSquirrel on 06/10/11 at 07:32 AM

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!

Voodoo? Grifter? Bat-Wing? Hawk and Dove? How does DC think that these books are a good idea? Most of these aren't going to last 4 months!

Okay, I was excited for the relaunch, but that's when I thought that they'd actually be relaunching good titles with characters that people actually wanted to read about. I look at this list and can't help but think that almost half of these are going to fail within the first few months.

Good bye DC, it was fun while it lasted

Posted by JDA190 on 06/10/11 at 08:00 AM

@Evangelion11, @josh, QTheSquirrel:  I thought that DC had confirmed that they were still holding the line at $2.99 for a standard size 20-pager.  Larger issues, like the oversized Justice League, are going to be $3.99.  I haven't heard anything about all the initial #1's being $3.99 and/or oversized.

Here's the relevant quote from DC's blog...

Both digital and print editions of DC’s comics will have parity pricing for the first four weeks of release; thereafter, the digital titles drop in price down to our standard 1.99 digital price point. Oversized issues, including JUSTICE LEAGUE #1, will start at $3.99 and drop to $2.99 after four weeks.

I read that as $2.99 is still that standard price.

And here's the link...

It seems really hard to believe no-one thinks a SHAZAM title could outsell some of these.  Maybe that's just my personal preferences clouding my judgement though.

I'm really gonna be shocked if there's no JSA book announced, since Mr. Terrific has his own title up there.

Posted by Radmobile on 06/10/11 at 09:05 AM

and still, james robinson and paul dini are nowhere to be seen...

@TomO  Well, there you go.

Posted by josh (@JAFlanagan) on 06/10/11 at 09:18 AM

I honestly think the whole diversity thing is gonna do more harm than good! B listers like Mr Terrific are getting their own books but Tim Drake doesn't?
Also diversity means more than just giving black characters their own books. Manhunter, Question, Cassandra Cain, Conner Hawke, Ryan Choi all these characters could add a diversity to the DC line and are much more deserving of a book than Mr Terrific or Batwing (WTF!)
I think giving characters that no one cares about their own book just because of their ethnicity is gonna produce a lot of sub standard stories and lead to a lot of complaints.

Also Batwoman was terrible! The only reason people bought it was for the art, the story and characters were completely forgettable! I say cancel Batwoman before it begins and give Huntress her own book!

I guess there goes Stephanie Brown Batgirl. What a shame. Best DC book I was reading aside from Lex in Action the past few months,

Getting close to noon on Friday, and still no official word on the Superman books to be relaunched.

I wonder if they're going to make us wait until Saturday when Geoff Johns and Jim Lee are supposed to hold court at that Superman film fest thing going on.

After all, didn't they make an announcement about the announcement they were going to be making on Saturday that affected Superman?

Posted by TomO on 06/10/11 at 11:46 AM

I'm still betting on Watchmen being the final announcement.  It won't be a sequel, but a complete integration into the new DCU.  I believe they will be part of the new "history" of the DCU, with the basic origin story happening as it did in the graphic novel.  But the final outcome slightly different.  Ozymandias still unleashed something and it maybe destroyed a city, but no journal being discovered to ruin it.  And since it happened in the 80's, there's been plenty of time for the world to have recovered.  It will be the DCU's 9/11.  Most of the heroes we'll be seeing in the reboot would technically have been born in the 70's or 80's or even 90's, so it works.

And then, we can still have the discovery of the journal lead to a huge event at some point that we follow in the comics.  Also, the return of Dr. Manhattan at some point, and the actual comic we'd see on the shelves would be more like Infinity Inc., with the latest The New Minutemen or New Crimebusters as the next gen team taking up the mantle.  Nite Owl 3 and a new female Rorschach would be my guess as to the stars of the team.

Plus, we'd get flashback stories to fill in the gaps, and the surviving characters as legacy heroes in their sixties and seventies.

It wouldn't be a direct sequel to Watchmen, so everyone can just chillax and enjoy alternate stories of these characters.

That's my pure speculation, and I just wanted it out there before the remaining announcements so I can look like a genius when I'm right.

Posted by Joethemithra on 06/10/11 at 01:57 PM

So, if we assume DC will continue to "Hold the line at $2.99" on these new #1s... we are looking at a cost of $155.48 to try each #1 in Septembet (and another $2.99 in 2012 for Batman Inc.)

I believe the correct spelling for the last name of the Frankenstein artist is Ponticelli.

@player1  That's true.

Posted by josh (@JAFlanagan) on 06/10/11 at 03:01 PM

I'm really thinking I'm going to limit myself to 5 DC titles, about what I get now, so now I'm leaning towards just these: Batgirl, Batman: The Dark Knight, Frankenstein, Resurrection Man and Voodoo. Mostly based on the creators, but somewhat based on the characters.

I like Gail Gimone's writing, hence Batgirl (and a Google search of both artists reveals that these guys are both quite good).

I was already getting Finch's Batman: The Dark Knight, so the renumbering is just a small hiccup.

I think the Frankenstein idea looks kind of cool, although somewhat reminiscent of Rick Remender's Franken-Castle (and again, a quick Google search reveals that the artist has some real skills).

DnA back on Resurrection Man? Even though I never read the original, I like their work, and again, a quick Google search reveals that the artist is pretty great.

Voodoo? She was one of my favorite WILDCats characters, and I dig Sami Basri. I hope it's not too convoluted. When Sami Basri leaves, I'm sure I'll drop it like a bad habit.

Of the first four, I'll probably stick with Batgirl as long as Gail Simone writes it, I'll probably keep getting Batman: The Dark Knight as long as Finch is there (providing it doesn't take a drop in quality), I'll probably keep getting Frankenstein as long as it entertains me, and I'll probably get Resurrection Man as long as Abnett and Lanning write it.

No guarantees, though, and any drop in quality, lateness of delivery or future budgetary restrictions will probably make me stop pulling these titles.

I'm mostly a Marvel guy, of late, and I get enough subscription titles direct from the publisher to keep me happy. I go to my LCS once a week because I enjoy browsing, I really like my retailer, and I usually have a nice conversation with whoever is behind the counter.

Posted by player1 on 06/10/11 at 03:12 PM

Also, if M. A. Asrar is the Supergirl artist, I might give that book a look-see.

Posted by player1 on 06/10/11 at 03:20 PM

DC really dropped the ball on this anouncement... :S

Posted by Mart8El on 06/10/11 at 03:31 PM

I've seen the Perez cover to Superman #1. You get to see the new suit in full detail. I'm not crazy about the metal boots, or that armor type padding around it. He's Superman, what's the purpose of metal boots or armor? Really. I don't mind the trimming and raised threading it is afterall what's in style now, and okay no underoos on the outside. But the belt is ugly. If he is wearing a jumpsuit, why a belt? It does appear to be skin tight. It won't fall off of him.

Yeah, really stupid looking boots. Detail for the sake of detail.

What I've seen of the Superman, Supergirl, and Superboy covers.. I hate all three...
Superman: Metal Boots, no more red underwear, slightly different logo, weird belt
Supergirl: Girl version of above
Superboy: Some kind of cyborg clone thing... argh...

Unofficial DC September planning spreadsheet!

Since I go to a small LCS I try to give the owner as much notice as possible of what I want. So I threw together a Google spreadsheet that will let me find out how much damage DC's September is going to do to my wallet, then let my LCS owner know. (btw : I assumed the last 4 titles are Superman, Action, Supergirl & Superboy - if that changes I'll update the spreadsheet).

So if you follow the link above, you can see the spreadsheet. Anyone can make a copy of it for their own use, as long as they are logged into a Google account. On the first sheet (titled 'All Titles') there is a row for each of the 52 titles and there are 3 columns where I can tell my LCS how interested I am - '1st Issue', 'Issues 1-3' or 'Ongoing' - put an 'x' in the appropriate column for the titles you want to get and the 'Totals' counts at the top of the sheet will update with how many books you're committing to. (Yes, only an 'x' will work for the totals - it's the easiest way to avoid accidentally counting cells with spaces in them and.....you don't really care, just use an x). Links back to the iFanboy discussion for each title are included for your convenience. :)

Once you've made your picks on the 'All Titles' sheet, click on the 'My Picks' sheet (at the bottom) and it will show you a list of (only) the books you have selected. This is the list you can print out or email to your LCS owner.....because with 52 #1's coming out that month they could use a little help. :)

For those who don't have a Google account.....sorry ? I can make the spreadsheet accessible to everyone, but then we'd all be editing the same copy and that wouldn't work very well. Once you're logged in to a Google account the 'Make a copy' option is under the 'File' menu. If you've never used a spreadsheet before please understand that I'm not going to teach you how. :)

@Mart8El  At least Supergirl ditched the belly shirt...She deffinately looks more Sci-Fi and less CW now...they all look more sci-fi actually, depending on creative teams, it could be a good direction for the line...

Posted by Alfred (@jimmymaketweet) on 06/10/11 at 03:46 PM

@Alfred  I can work with more sci-fi... I can't work with a robotic superboy. Erg... oh well... On an up-note, It won't effect me until next summer since I collect the graphic novels instead of the single issues... So one more year of what I'm used to.. then i'll jump into the abyss....

Posted by Mart8El on 06/10/11 at 03:51 PM

As for Superman's new costume look...I'm not necessarily a fan per se, but I'm not willing to swear off DC Comics over it either.

And if you think about it, it does make a small modicum of sense assuming two things.  First, I assume their ditching Byrne's protective aura (which pretty much anybody but Byrne already ditched) and second, I assume their ditching the costume made from his baby blankets idea, therefore making them as indestructable as he is.

Taking those two things into account, why wouldn't it make sense to make the suit and boots a little beefier.  After all, it's not like he's playing twiddleewinks all day long...he's out there busting heads and moving planets...a little extra arch support makes sense.

I'm just glad that we're going to get Superman books with Superman actually in them these days, so I'm giving the costume tweak some extra slack.

Posted by TomO on 06/10/11 at 03:56 PM

Grant Morrison on a Superman book is more then enough for me. Don't even put a solicitation up. Just put 'Grant Morrison' and I'll buy it.

So with Action Comics my final DC count is up to 12. Actually if you count Batman INC for next year I am up to 13. So I am getting 25% of DC books this fall.

I really hope the Dibneys come back in one of these titles.

Posted by Kirkerson on 06/10/11 at 04:26 PM

Elsewhere it was reported that Superman is being de-aged a little. They won't start at the beginning but to me its clearly different than Batman. Hell, All four characters that were Robin at some point are around, though we don't know if they still hold a connection to Batman or not. Will Tim Drake have a past as Robin, or even will Jason Todd?

That said, I don't think Batman will be all that different besides Babs is Batgirl. Morrison is continuing his Batman story next year.

I think the bigger changes for the Superman titles have to be because of the lawsuit against them, DC needs to be sure they have some form of Superman out there that is theirs, not the heirs to Segel and Shuster.

My feeling, some of the other changes seem to be what they think we think is cool. I am curious about JLA;Dark because of the vertigo characters, and I'm glad Jonah Hex is around.

Books I'm betting get cancelled:
Red Hood And The Outlaws
BatWing
Fury Of Firestorm
Mr Terrific
Captain Atom
Hawk and Dove
I, Vampire
Red Lanterns
Deathstroke

Books that'll get a revamp via a new creative team (if sales drop):
Teen Titans
Superboy
Supergirl
Birds Of Prey
Savage Hawkman
Green Arrow

Books that won't last once their writer decides to leave:
Aquaman
Swamp Thing

Books that will fall behind schedule:
JLA
Flash (duh)
Batman; Dark Knight (duh)
Superman
Fury of Firestorm
Action Comics (if Rags Morales draws it like rumored)
Hawkman. Tony Daniel doing two books?

Some of these books DC needs out there because they own the property, but I do wish they bring back the JSA, Power girl and some other stuff.

Oh, they just release Rags cover to Action.

Posted by Rbigley on 06/10/11 at 04:28 PM

from the PR release:

This September, New York Times bestselling writer Grant Morrison (ALL-STAR SUPERMAN) joins with sensational artist Rags Morales to bring you tales of The Man of Tomorrow unlike any you’ve ever read before in ACTION COMICS #1. This momentous first issue will set in motion the history of the DC Universe as Superman defends a world that doesn’t trust their first Super Hero.

Its a reboot. First Super Hero? No JSA, no Power Girl.

Posted by wallythegreenmonster on 06/10/11 at 04:45 PM

I  hope they announce other new series in October. I want my JSA.

Posted by nick0606 on 06/10/11 at 04:46 PM

For everyone griping about their  favorite C-list or D-list character not being in a book, remember that there is DC Universe Presents that is starring freaking Deadman in the first arc.  If that character can hold down a storyline in there, I think that a Phantom Stranger, Spectre, or, even more likely, JSA & Wild CATS in the near future.

Posted by jonnyflash on 06/10/11 at 04:51 PM

No JSA...it was floundering since Johns left it.  I can understand the whys...and having the WW II era not be the beginning of the DCU even though Supes and Bats were around for a few years prior makes sense I suppose.

Posted by MikefromGotham on 06/10/11 at 04:52 PM

One thing I cannot believe is the lack of a Superman/Batman book.  It HAS to be published somewhere in here, especially since it was out of continuity anyway.  Maybe they won't even renumber it.

But there MUST be a book for the LCS to hand over to Joe/Jane Average who walks in and says "I want a book with Superman & Batman."  JLA isn't it.

I think there's a lot more to be announced. I read the Gail Simone Batgirl interview this morning and she hints that there's a lot more about DC's plans that people still don't know. Given the amount of titles creators we haven't seen, I wouldn't give up hope if you're upset.

Posted by Kirkerson on 06/10/11 at 04:59 PM

Now we need a pull list thread!

Posted by player1 on 06/10/11 at 05:01 PM

Add Action to my list and call it a day. But honestly, the relaunch is already working. I currently read very few titles in the DCU proper, but there are at least 15 #1's that i want to check out. I can't say how many of those I'd stick with, but I'm staring at 10-ish that I can totally see myself sticking with.

Overall, DC's impressed me with the breadth of their line. I may not have all my favorites represented, but I can most often see their redundancy and why DC wouldn't focus on them. At the same time, I love some of the darker and more offbeat sensibilities that they've brought back to the DCU. All in all, I'm more excited than not for the relaunch.

I'm also very curious to see how the new timeline works.

Is it bad that I kinda don't even care about Flashpoint at this point? Maybe because I don't think it's the greatest story to begin with? But whatever... bring on September!

@jonnyflash  --thats a good point. I hope its a place for all the loose end characters. Actually that book, if its like you're saying could have all kinds of super awesome potential and variety. =) But yeah, i keep coming back to "well if Mr. Terrific gets a friggin book..."

Also i can't believe that Superman/Batman book isn't on there. It was getting really good lately too! From what i've been told thats actually a pretty valuable property for that Logo alone, which i know that DC was very protective of on the licensing side of things.

Maybe they have a 2nd wave planned for down the line?

Posted by wallythegreenmonster on 06/10/11 at 05:04 PM

They have room for I, Vampire, Voodoo, Animal Man, Frankestein, Resurrection Man, Sgt Rock, Grifter and Stormwatch but not Shazam or Doctor Fate?! What the hell?! I mean, Stormwatch?! Who cares!

Posted by Archimedes on 06/10/11 at 05:04 PM

I'll be honest, none of the new titles interest me and I've lost Power Girl and Zatanna for now looks like:( I will add the Justice League though to my normal DC reads.

Posted by s1lentslayer on 06/10/11 at 05:07 PM

I've decided (tentatively) how I'm doing this. I'm pulling ten DC titles.

Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and Aquaman, I'm getting hard copies. JLA, Flash, Action and Detective I'm getting digitial one month late. I'll leave three digital slots open for whatever else strikes my fancy.

Posted by JNewcomb on 06/10/11 at 05:09 PM

I gotta say, I am shocked at the lack of JSA. I mean, I can understand how it creates a lot of confusion for casual/new readers. And the quality of the book has been pretty poor since Johns left.  But still, that's a ballsy move on their part. Those characters mean a great deal to a lot of people, so that's kinda harsh.  But I guess if you're gonna do it, now would be the time. Maybe they'll pop up in Multiversity.

Which brings me to another thought; are they going to give these "cast off" characters a final moment? Or will they just be gone/altered after the current arc? Are we going to get to say goodbye to Power Girl? What will it be like the last time we see Dick in the cape and cowl? I assume it's all gonna change "in a flash", and that's kind of sad.

Posted by WheelHands on 06/10/11 at 05:10 PM

@WheelHands  That is if Multiversity is still being planned.

Posted by nick0606 on 06/10/11 at 05:15 PM

People are still insisting that this is a alternate earth that will tie into multiversity with an amalgam of wildtorm earth and earth 0. Interestingly Donna Troy, who is supposed to be unique in the multiverse isn't in the books even though a majority of her eras Titans are.

Posted by LongtimeReader on 06/10/11 at 05:16 PM

I count 16 books I'd be willing to try at least one issue of. Is it odd that I'm less interested in what's coming here, then to see how it evolves a year down the road?

Posted by brianmaru on 06/10/11 at 05:25 PM

@cubman987  I'm buying one DC book currently.

It's not being renewed.

Bye bye Power Girl

Posted by stubbleupdate on 06/10/11 at 05:25 PM

@jonnyflash it is now I guess.

Posted by MikefromGotham on 06/10/11 at 05:29 PM

@LongtimeReader: Donna's in the new JLI. She's on the cover.

Posted by WheelHands on 06/10/11 at 05:37 PM

I'm not loving the jeans on Superman on the Action Comics cover, but whatever, Grant Morrison's writing it.

What I'm Getting

Batman
Detective Comics
Batman and Robin
Nightwing
Justice League
Wonder Woman
Aqua Man
Green Lantern
Swamp Thing
Teen Titans
Action Comics

I'll probably end up dropping a few of those after a couple issues.

Posted by oblivious247 on 06/10/11 at 05:38 PM

At this point, I'm only locked into buying All-Star Western, Suicide Squad, and The Flash in print form. I'm more than willing to give other titles a look digitally though. I'm playing that by ear into the reviews come out.

I wonder if DC is doing away with the multiverse concept for a bit? I mean, that's what Crisis was all about originally... it just seems funny because they've made a whole point to bring it back.

But if it were me, here's what I'd do: Establish your new timeline with just ONE universe. Spend a year doing that. THEN have the Justice League -- or whoever -- start to visit other Earths and timelines. Treat it they way they do in the animated films/TV shows -- by having the characters they know discover these new worlds. Re-establish Earth-2 for the first time. Then you can introduce other versions of the JL as the JSA. You could establish Power Girl and Huntress this way. You could also visit Captain Marvel and establsh him anew as a counterpoint to Superman.

If those storylines become popular with the (hopefully) new fanbase, then you can start spinning them off into their new series. That's how I'd handle all of these properties that don't quite fit into a streamlined universe.

Perez artwork is horrible as usual!  Retire already!

Posted by xKRYPTONOPOLISx on 06/10/11 at 06:21 PM

Wow.  All in all a good line-up.

REALLY Excited for:

Swamp Thing
Frankenstien
Animal Man
Stormwatch (Stormwatch by Paul Cornell set in the DCU? Crazy!)
JLA
JLA Dark (Shade is one of my all-time faves)
Grifter (Nathan Edmundson is The Man)
Batman
Resurrection Man

Posted by SuperLuigi on 06/10/11 at 06:22 PM

@daccampo: Couldn't agree more. That's the way to do it. And the exclusion of all the ("original") Earth Two characters leads us to believe that something like that may very well be in the pipeline. Here's hoping.

Posted by WheelHands on 06/10/11 at 06:26 PM

All I know  is that after the debacle that was Final Crisis and RIP, I thought it was safe to go out and buy DC comics.  How did Dan Didio know and crush the titles, Birds of Prey, Gotham Sirens, and Batman that I was starting to like again and crush them?  How is DC in business when all they do is stunts that they later wind up embarrassed about at Comic conventions when they have to face angry and disappointed fans?

Posted by aloysha2011 on 06/10/11 at 06:39 PM

@aloyasha2011 - Loved Final Crisis and RIP myself. Pretty sure Marvel's had their own stunts too; some work and others don't.

As for the books you like, which I do too, not a ton of people buy them. They sell okay, but aren't huge. Perhaps they'll come back in some form in the near future and I'd imagine they will.

Posted by brianmaru on 06/10/11 at 07:25 PM

I'm excited for 24 books, but budget constraints will allow for 15 or so. Still, 15 more than books than I was buying before this. I want to miss Wally West and Power Girl, but I will always have my back issues.

Posted by MrChrisB on 06/10/11 at 07:39 PM

Shame there's no Nikola Scott pencilled book.  I really love her work, which helped me get more into DC via Teen Titans. Not always the best story, but damn...that woman can draw.

Looking forward to seeing her on some upcoming Marvel book, or dare I say...creator owned?

Posted by AlanRob (@AlanMRob) on 06/10/11 at 07:41 PM

@aloysha2011: A bit much to assume that DC is embarassed by anything don't ya think? This is classic fanboy entitlement. To think that this publishing company owes you an apology because you didn't like a book or event. They're tryin to make more money. Just like any business. Sales are low, so they're taking a risk. Rolling the dice. They'll face angry fans the same way they always have. With a grain of salt and a laugh. Because, like it or not, you're the minority.

Posted by WheelHands on 06/10/11 at 07:42 PM

My current plan is to buy 36 of these 52 titles, every single one of them digitally.

The ones I'm most excited about:
Justice League
Wonder Woman
Batman
DC Universe Presents
Swamp Thing
Animal Man
Justice League Dark
Frankenstein
Ressurection Man
Legion Lost
Blackhawks
Grifter
Action Comics

Posted by Alexferrer on 06/10/11 at 07:49 PM

I think the much of the conundrum here comes from, "They can change the characters I don't like all they want, just as long as they leave alone those I do like."

Posted by brianmaru on 06/10/11 at 08:10 PM

This might bankrupt me..... I am a sucker for this type of thing.  It's not the number #1 per say, I mean it's not that I am a collector, I just like the idea that I am onto something from the ground floor.  So that said I am going to be buying most of these titles and hopefully find 10 books by the end of the year that I really like.

I will try all 52. I'll buy them in paper. I'll continue the ones that I like.

Posted by Noto on 06/10/11 at 10:00 PM

No JSA yet, I just fell in love with the 1st super hero team ever in the last year, the rich history of multi generational characters, classics, throwbacks, nostalgic new and old mixed together. These are some of the best characters in the DCU and one of my current favorites. Been reading multiple past runs plus current and want more.
On another note, I'm glad to see Tim Drake still around but old costume was pretty sweet and am all for a good revamp and even dig the new costume in the sense that it compliments his name but the other one id sharp and classic without looking outdated. Too many batbooks can can oversaturate the market and turn longtime fans off on the character all together,  while I understand a corporation capitalizing on a cash cow character, we could do without a couple titles.
While I'll most likely continue a couple of my favorites as a (think Josh of iFanboy said it already) # is just that, a #, it doesnt change the good stories I've come to love and won't stop good stories from being told, that lies within the talent on deck. I will also like to try a few on the cult side. gotta go, someones knocking....till later... JSA kid

Posted by JSAkid on 06/10/11 at 10:23 PM

I still think Superman/Batman is THE best entry point for new readers. I predict within 8 months JLA will be so swamped with either the Part 4 of 89 part epic that involves a million new Justice Leagues, or it will be ramping up for the next 40 book event. They need the out of continuity stuff. Unless it really is a 'new' paradigm.

Posted by jonnyflash on 06/10/11 at 10:24 PM

No Outsiders but more importantly no JSA or Tim Drake Solo, that's going to be weird going forward.

Almost looks like they have 2 Supermen and an Android Superboy. Supergirl looks like they merged her with Powergirl but shrunk her assets a bit, no sign of Stephanie Brown either, and with Connor a possible robot now, is the Tim/Cassie thing going to start back up, or maybe a Time/Cassie/Bart Triangle?

13 Team books (not including Main Guy and Partner titles), going to be interesting..... I may have to drop a pretty penny on each one, and THAT's going to be a long week of reading.

Posted by LukeB (@LukeB4tt) on 06/10/11 at 10:43 PM

Definitely getting:

Justice League
Wonder Woman
Batman & Robin
Action Comics
Hawk and Dove

Probably Getting:

The Flash

Also considering:
Justice LEague International
Fury of Firestorm

Posted by JohnVFerrigno (@johnvferrigno) on 06/10/11 at 10:48 PM

Batgirl

Batman

Batman & Robin

Batman: The Dark Knight

Batwoman

Detective Comics

Frankenstein, Agent of SHADE

Green Lantern

Green Lantern Corps

Green Lantern: The New Guardians

Nightwing

Red Hood and the Outlaws

Red Lanterns
Stormwatch

Anything by Jeff Lemire, Paul Cornell, or Kenneth Rocafort are pretty much auto-buys for me.  I'll be giving the Green Lantern titles 2 issues apiece to regain my interest.  Same for Tony Daniel's Detective Comics.  His run as Batman writer/artist has been barely passable.

Posted by JFernandes (@JDFernandes) on 06/10/11 at 11:43 PM

I plan to get a lot of titles, I may need to cut down on a few

Action Comics
Superman
Super girl
Super boy
Justice League
Justice League: Dark
Wonder Woman
Demon Knights
Animal Man
Frankenstein: Agent of Shade
Ressurrection Man
Swamp Thing
Sgt. Rock
Storm Watch
All-Star Western
Flash

Possible but probably going to get cut
Blue Beetle
Suicide Squad
Catwoman
Aquaman
Deathstroke

So it's official. This relaunch, that for the most part consists of a bunch of stuff I am less than excited about, did away with 3 of the DC books that I have been enjoying the most. Batgirl (Steph Brown), Power Girl, and Zatanna. Yay.

Posted by j206 (@206jordan) on 06/11/11 at 01:43 AM

@j206 Is that Zatanna (sans top hat and normal costume?) in Justice League Dark with John Constantine (I think I see him) and Deadman... and a few other I don't recognize?

Posted by LukeB (@LukeB4tt) on 06/11/11 at 06:43 AM

A pretty good collection.  I'm curious if there are still some other titles out there, as Batman Beyond is supposed to keep going, as well as the Superman Beyond title that was announced a while back starting with a 0 issue in July/August,

Overall though quite a few titles I'll be getting, and a few new characters(Voodoo, Grifter) I might try.

Posted by OwlyFan on 06/11/11 at 07:09 AM

Even though there are about 1/4 of these that I'm curious to check out either in-store or through previews and reviews, I'm still planning to hang back from actually putting any money into these things (as trade paperbacks) until at least a year down the road.  The 3/4 that I'm NOT interested in just look SO bad that I can't help think this is still a "FAIL" scenario in the long term.

When this event was first annoced for the first time ever I had a violent reaction and thought thats it... I`m dropping DC.  And I have always been an avid DC reader.   However,  I`ve enjoyed seeing the 52 launched and its left me with a problem of what to read.  Now the 52 (53) have been annoced I think I have my list.  However, at times it feels like I`m guessing almost with a lucky deep.  Even with over a decades of comic reading behind me....  Though my new DC pull list.

Justice League
Aquaman
Fury of Firestorm
Justice League International
Green Lantern
Green Lantern Corps
Green Lantern: The New Guardians
Red Lanterns
Batgirl
Red Hood and the Outlawa
Justice League Dark
Demon Knights
Resurection Man
Legion Lost
Legion of Superheros
Teen Titans
Stormwatch
Action Comics
Superman
Supergirl

I`m looking forward to September... But I`m going to miss some titles...

I'd love to see what the community is interested in buying.

For me it looks like
Justice league
Wonder woman
Aquaman
Green lantern
Green lantern corps
Green lantern new guardians
Red lanterns
Batman
Batman & robin
Dark knight
Night wing
Swamp thing
Animal man
Justic league dark
Storm watch

Red hood

Legion
Legion lost
Al star western
Supergirl

Posted by abstractgeek on 06/11/11 at 12:47 PM

I think in the end what I will lament the most is the loss of Stephanie Brown Batgirl and Powergirl

Posted by convoy83 on 06/11/11 at 01:20 PM

so no more Batman Beyond and Adam Beechen?

Posted by Apotheosize on 06/11/11 at 01:33 PM

@Apotheosize  I think it just won't relaunch at #1. Adam Beechen just recently spoke about 3 or 4 arcs he's writing that will continue BB on comicbookressources.com. So I highly doubt he would have talked about it if it was just cancelled. ;)

These 52 issues are just renumbering launches, I don't think continuity is gonna change that much and I think some titles just won't be affected (like Batman Beyond, for example, or Xombi).

Posted by KillTheG1mp on 06/11/11 at 01:39 PM

@convoy83 Agreed. Love the exuberant fun of books like Batgirl and Power Girl. Hoping that some of that same spirit is continued in the new books. I think the announcement I was most annoyed by is the new human-hating Supergirl, as I thought her book had been fun as well.

Posted by MikePositive (@MikeRoe) on 06/11/11 at 02:10 PM

@superkal1978  He hasnt really been writing anything for months, just co-plotting.  Besides, I think I remember an announcement saying he was going to concentrate on the Earth-1 trades.

Posted by AlanRob (@AlanMRob) on 06/11/11 at 02:38 PM

@MikePositive - I'm not sure what it is, but anytime DC has a "fun" book, it doesn't seem to last. And there certainly isn't much in this new launch list that looks light-hearted or fun.

Couple thoughts now that we got the whole list of titles:

For all the talk about relaunching the characters and making the line new reader friendly. If anything, I think things look more confusing. Tons of weird new 2nd and 3rd tier books. TWO Legion books. Seems like nearly 1/3 of the books are odd fringe characters who I do not think will appeal to people all that much at all. All I really see accomplished is the Superman books got an easy excuse to start over.

And as for re-designing the characters and making them hipper and fresher for a new audience....uh. Still looks like old DC to me. And it seems they might have even taken a step back in going even more 90's looking than before. The same joke remains about Jim Lee being the arbiter of cool and hip. In general it just feels that DC's creators are on the whole an old bunch of guys. Where as over at Marvel, you get the feels that the guys are a young bunch. I'd be curious to see the average age of the creative teams at both companies. Because to me, DC still feels like the grandpa company. No matter how many FUBU jackets they buy.

Posted by j206 (@206jordan) on 06/11/11 at 03:24 PM

overall, i'm feeling better about this than at first. i think that moving back into the mainline DCU  characters like Swamp Thing, who came from it originally, makes sense. i'm going to miss the current Batgirl, as i thought that it was the best superhero book DC was putting out each month. hopefully they have something planned for Ms. Brown (and Mr. Miller) down the road . . .

i've always considered James Robinson an underrated writer & the lack of anything for him is a real shame. maybe they have something in the works. DC gave him a Flashpoint mini to write, so they must have some faith in him, right? poor Dini on the other hand . . . i would love to see JMS on a monthly book again, but given his recent track record at finishing anything . . .

nagging question: how can they de-age Barbara but not Dick? are they no longer peers? if so, that would really suck. they should have made Barbara Batwoman and ditched Kane (and i like Kane by the way)

in sum, definately getting: Batman, Catwoman, Swamp Thing, Animal Man, Resurrection Man & JLI. (that's a plus one gain DC)
would like to check out, but will depend on budget: JL Dark, Batman & Robin, Wonder Woman, at least one Cornel book(Demon Knights?), Blue Beatle and Batgirl. have no idea what to think of the Spuerman stuff. will probably pick up first issue of Titans to see what the new Tim Drake status quo is, but have low expectations to stick with it, though . . .

Posted by creightonblinn on 06/11/11 at 03:50 PM

ps: am i the only one hoping that DC does not pass up this golden chance to retcon away Identity Crisis and bring back Elongated Man and Sue? come on, DC, you've even got a JLI book for them now . . .

Posted by creightonblinn on 06/11/11 at 03:53 PM

hey but that's 53 titles

Posted by skrewzlewz on 06/11/11 at 04:17 PM

@JohnVFerrigno: No. I think you're alone on that one. :)

@Mogodontplay: You are right. 52 titles plus Morrison's wrap-up of Batman Inc. Classics like Batman Odyssey have unfortunately not made the grade. Too much napping on the batcave floor.

Posted by LongtimeReader on 06/11/11 at 05:01 PM

@creightonblinn: One reason Robinson may not have any assignments could be because he blasted JLA into the toilet faster than yesterday's Taco Bell combo meal.

Just a theory.

He is not one of the creators I'll miss.

I'll bid him ado in the style of his dialogue: "See ... er ... you ... umm ... later ... James. It's ... hmm ... been ... er ... real."

Posted by LongtimeReader on 06/11/11 at 07:46 PM

@LongtimeReader  oh and surely Flashpoints story has to have something to do with what happens to the universe or why publish it and just pick a random time to start from 1 instead.

Posted by LongtimeReader on 06/11/11 at 07:51 PM

@Reform  Those are my two biggest complaints as well.  Overall I'm excited, but I'd be more excited if the two of them were involved.

Posted by AlanRob (@AlanMRob) on 06/11/11 at 08:13 PM

Ok, well...here's my pull list for the reboot:

Justice League #1
Aquaman #1
Green Lantern #1
Green Lantern Corps #1
Green Lantern: The New Guardians #1
Batman #1
Nightwing #1
Teen Titans #1
Blue Beetle #1

Digital Maybes:

Swamp Thing #1
Batman and Robin #1
Green Arrow #1
The Flash #1
Action Comics #1
Superman #1

I gotta say, though: some of this I'm pulling out of sheer curiosity. I doubt, for example, that I'll continue with either of the Super-books after issue 1, because I just don't find Superman that interesting. Maybe M & M can change my mind on Action. I hate the idea of Damien Wayne as Robin, but I'm interested in the Bruce/Damien dynamic. Swamp Thing? I neither know nor care about the character, but I dig Scott Snyder's work like mad, so I'll see if he can change my perception.

To be honest, I'm a little disappointed by the sum total of the reboot announcements so far. I'm a big fan of the DCU proper, but I've never been a big fan of lumping universes together (hello, Vertigo and Wildstorm; I know nothing about you, but now you're occupying 1/4 of the DC books on the shelves, so I guess I'll have to get used to you). Plus, a few of my favorite characters have been shuffled to the side (I'm looking at you, Tim Drake) in favor of other characters who, after a host of interviews and announcements, still haven't demonstrated that they deserve a book of their own in a 21st century DCU. I don't know, it all just feels a little...off. I'm all for taking one for the team in order for DC Comics to gain a wider audience, but I want DC COMICS to gain a wider audience, and this just doesn't feel like DC to me.

Of course, that could all change if half of the new titles tank right out of the box.

@j206  If TWO Legion books is a shock to you, you haven't been paying attention.  They've HAD two books since it was relaunched after Final Crisis - LSH and ADVENTURE COMICS.

And to those who asked - this is a reboot of the DC Universe.  These 52 titles are all part of the DC Univese, but DC has published, and probably will continue to publish, titles that are NOT part of the DC Universe. Some of these include: all Vertigo titles, all DC Kids titles (Batman: the Brave and the Bold, Young Justice, Tiny Titans), Batman: Odyssey, Batman Beyond, DC Universe Online, etc.  Some of these may have been cancelled but it's by no means a given.

If it's not part of the past or present DCU then it's an "alternate universe". Of course this would include some of DC's past biggest sellers like Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, and Kingdom Come. A notable exception to this would be Legion because of its ties to a time-travelling  Superboy/Superman.

I'll be getting most of theses titles. Nice to see Batwoman surface again after such a hiatus. Thanks heaps for this list

Posted by kryptonkid on 06/12/11 at 01:00 AM

@chadwhitley  (hello, Vertigo and Wildstorm; I know nothing about you, but now you're occupying 1/4 of the DC books on the shelves, so I guess I'll have to get used to you).

Occupying 1/4 of the DC books? Let's see, I count GRIFTER< STORMWATCH and VOODOO.  That's 3 former Wildstorm books. And then from Vertigo there's... SWAMP THING.  Except Swamp Thing was originally a DC Universe title prior to the creation of the Vertigo line, so...  nah, tell you what, I'll give you that one as a freebee. ANIMAL MAN, same situation... this one I don't give you, since he has been active for the last few years in the current DCU. So there's all of 4 books out of 52.  By my math that works out to 1/13, considerably less than 1/4.  Maybe you could just skip those 4 books??? OK, and STATIC SHOCK was originally part of the "Milestone Universe", so I'll give you that one as well.

Sure there may be a lot of unfamiliar titles like Resurrection Man, Frankenstein,  etc. but you'll just have to trust me, these were all from obscure corners of the DC Universe proper.

Posted by positronic on 06/12/11 at 01:22 AM

@LongtimeReader   you think no others survive? What about DC universe online legends? I think that will carry on as usual being only half way thru its alloted run and not the DCU proper.
oh and surely Flashpoints story has to have something to do with what happens to the universe or why publish it and just pick a random time to start from 1 instead.

That's right... No other *TITLES* will survive in September at DC COMICS. Though DC Comics owns other lines, such as Vertigo, they are not considered the same Company for the purpose of story telling, though there are similarities and common charatcers in each.

So, Again, Batman Beyond is OUT. DC Universe Online is already outside of DC Proper, as it is not in continuity. BUT, that doesn't mean it'll still be around. They might get rid of it too.

Exactly, they're using Flashpoint to jumpstart the DC Universe. BUT, by the time Flashpoint is over, and this new universe is all there is, Flashpoint will no longer matter. Do you remember the DC Universe post Crisis on Infinite Earths in 1986? ALL Titles that made it through the wreckage acted in a complete NEW matter, with no memory or effects of the big event. ALL NEW WORLD. ALL NEW UNIVERSE. That's what's happening right now. That being said, that doesn't mean it'll stay like that forever, BUT, I am confident that the DC Universe will never go back to the way it was before Flashpoint. It might change again, they might gain memory of Flashpoint and the way things were, some things might revert, but these new characters, new costumes, and new teams are here to stay for the time being.

And I quote the first article to come with the info on this all:

"After that week, DC will be renumbering all of their DCU titles, 52 of them to be exact, back to #1."

Posted by Mart8El on 06/12/11 at 08:59 AM

So Stormwatch PHD is now part of the main DC Universe? Weren't they Wildstorm?

Posted by IroncladMerc (@mikeha) on 06/12/11 at 09:20 AM

@IroncladMerc: DC got rid of the Wildstorm imprint last December, but they kept the characters.

I'll give this reboot 12 issues tops. Then it'll be back to old school DCU.

@positronic  You are correct.  I offer only the following as an excuse:  1) I'm really bad at math, and 2) I was a little...worked up, which tends to result in more hyperbole than I usually employ. But you're right--with the Vertigo books (and I have to include Justice League Dark b/c of John Contantine's involvement), the Wildstorm books, and the obscure characters (Resurrection Man, Batwing(?), Demon Knights, virtually all of the JL Dark characters, Sgt. Rock, Frankenstein, etc.), I just get a little lost.  It may be some peoples' cup of tea, and that's fine.  It's just not for me.

Sorry for the bad math. :)

@Mart8El  Modernizing the look and feel of a character is one thing, dick-slapping 70 + years of continuity for the love of marketing is another thing. Yes some things will change, no I don't believe it's going to start from the beginning with "origins" stories for 52 new titles. Therefore I think you are have a misrepresentation of the relaunch.

Marvel starts new number ones all the times dividing up into "volumes" and they don't start all over again with new origins all the times.

Put your head out of your ass and think for just a second how stupid it would be for DC to cancel continuity and say a big "fuck you" to fans just for fun and maybe, just maybe, get some new readers... That's now viable for a multi-million company like DC Comics, which is one of the two biggest comic book company and one of the oldest in the world, to do.

Modernizing the looks, some silly origins (retcons, anyone?) and putting key writers/artists on titles while creating the illusion of perfect jumping-on points for new readers by extending 52 #1 titles on the market? Yes, fuck yes!

And by the way, DC only stated it was "relaunching" 52 titles at #1, they NEVER mentionned those 52 titles would be the ONLY ONES on shelves come September. Therefore I believe Batman Beyond will continue its run (Adam Beechen talked about it in an interview when asked, BB is not over), same thing with Xombi, Rozum stated he had a few arcs already written up and big stuff coming for David Kim.

We'll have to wait for the sollicitations to pop-out on their website to confirm it. I don't doubt it.

Posted by KillTheG1mp on 06/12/11 at 02:40 PM

@AquaPimp82

I don't think you've been reading the press releases very closely. While this is certainly a marketing stunt on the surface, the relaunch also seems to show a lot of philosophical changes in the way DC is approaching their business. It's way too early to say if that's categorically a good or bad thing (probably a bit of both, depending on how you're effected), but the way I see it is THERE'S NO GOING BACK.

They've essentially said "we're no longer cool with only selling tens of thousands of books to a quickly aging and dwindling group of people when we seem to have no problem getting millions of people of all ages and backgrounds to support the EXACT SAME CHARACTERS in other forms of entertainment media."

IF they do abandon this... I don't know what will happen, but I TRULY believe it won't be a return to what we have now.

@JohnVFerrigno yea I thought we would see the big red cheese get a title. Maybe they thought it was a bit to old fashioned.

Ken has been nailing it all week in summing this whole deal up!

Posted by MikefromGotham on 06/12/11 at 08:44 PM

It's not that we aren't cool, it's just that several million more people go to the movies and play video games than read comics. The whole thing is built on out love of the art form, we should feel proud and embrace the coming change. Okay, enough drunk typing for one night...

Posted by MikefromGotham on 06/12/11 at 09:19 PM

Ok, I've had a little time to think about this and decompress, and here's where I am at this point. Like I said before, I understand the need for change.  Change is, in fact, inevitable, for without change, there is little possibility for growth.  All of us want our characters to grow, to develop, and that requires change.  So I'm not convinced that change is the enemy here.  As a matter of fact, having given it a little thought, I think I can muster a cautious optimism in the face of the changes to come.

Most of them, anyway.

It seems to me that the current buyers of comic books are getting older.  I don't have numbers to support this; simply observations from hanging out at my local shop. Comic books are a niche market, and have been for some time, but now that niche is narrowing even more.  That's not to say that comic book characters are unpopular (as has been illustrated above); but that interest is not translating to a massive upsurge in comic sales.  So, what to do? If we were the executives, if we were the ones calling the shots, what would our vision for the future be? Continue selling to an aging demographic (to which I belong, by the way) with only minimal changes to the mythos, until the gap between the current audience and the younger generations widens beyond our ability to bridge? Or risk making changes now--big changes, perhaps, and unpopular at that--in the hope that the characters we know and love might live on beyond us, not simply on the big screen or through video games, but in the pages (digital or print) that have been such an important part of our lives?

I don't like all the changes that are coming, and I probably never will.  But here's the thing:  all of us may have to give up something we like in order to preserve the hobby that we love.  I think DC needs to give those of us who have been loyal to the form a bit more information and engage us in dialogue; their approach needs to be more pastoral and less "executive," at least where we're concerned.  I think the whole "shrouded in secrecy" approach is tiresome, and leaves me thinking "what is it they don't want me to know?" rather than getting excited about what's to come.  But I can appreciate the position they're in.  And they are doing some bold things to move the medium forward (day and date digital is huge).

Anyway, just a few more thoughts. :)

Posted by chadwhitley (@chadwhitley) on 06/12/11 at 09:49 PM

Ha!  I just realized that the whole "change" thing was on a different discussion board.  Oh well.  It's still true.

Posted by chadwhitley (@chadwhitley) on 06/12/11 at 09:53 PM

@Mart8El  You seem a little confused. Vertigo is an "imprint" that is published by DC Comics and shares some common characters, as do titles like DC Universe Online and Batman Beyond.

As evidence that Batman Beyond is NOT part of the mainline DC Universe, we need look no further than the fact that BB portrays an older Barbara Gordon as commisioner of police in Gotham who was never crippled by the Joker and never became Oracle. There are other variances from established (current) DCU continuity as well.  So BB is an "alternate future" as is DC Universe Online.

I may be wrong, but I saw no announcement that DC is cancelling all Vertigo titles, and things like Batman Beyond and DC Universe online (in short the NON-"DC Universe" titles).

Posted by positronic on 06/13/11 at 12:40 AM

In fact, now that I think of it, BATMAN BEYOND isn't even really an "alternate future" of the main DCU.  It's the future (the only one portrayed so far) of the BATMAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES "universe".

Posted by positronic on 06/13/11 at 01:18 AM

@positronic  But we've seen that Morrison's added Terry as a possible future of the Batman family.

Posted by Heroville (@ealcantara) on 06/13/11 at 01:44 AM

As I now recall, the Terry McGuinness Batman made an appearance in the SUPERMAN/BATMAN book as from a parallel earth, so I think they may be treating the BB universe as one of the 52 post-INFINITE CRISIS multiverse.

They may or may not decide to refer to the multiverse from the point of view of the new rebooted DCU. If they decide not to mention it, I guess it's up to the fans to decide if these other universes still "exist" or not.

Posted by positronic on 06/13/11 at 01:45 AM

I'm a bit disappointed that there isn't a Shazam book, but there are a crap ton of Bat books.  I was very excited about this reboot initially, bu the more and more I'm hearing the less I'm excited.  If Batman inc, and the idea behind it is sticking around I don't know if I'm going to care about any of this.

Posted by Rchapoteau on 06/13/11 at 08:02 AM

DC will gain few long term readers from this stunt. So I ask why take such a big risk when the rewards will be minimum? Continuity is not the reason people don't read comics, it's the price. Little Timmy only has so much money to spend at the shop every week. He doesn't give a sh*t that Superman is fighting Doomsday in one book while he's suppose to be walking the country in another. There's nobody out there saying, "I sure would like to read Action Comics but I need to read the first 901 issues before I jump in." So quit blaming continuity when the real enemy is price. Cut prices and the readers will come back.

Posted by AquaPimp82 (@AquaPimp82) on 06/13/11 at 09:55 AM

@AquaPimp82

Price is definitely part of the problem. I think current prices reflect the shrinkage of the readership. If a title is profitable at $1.50-2.00 an issue when selling 100,000 copies, what would you do as a publisher if you saw your sales drop to 50,000 or less (which is essentially what's happened over the last 10-15 years)?

That's why this "stunt" (as you inaccurately put it, IMO) has the ability to change that. Sure, paying full price for a digital comic right now seems silly, but I don't think DC is approaching this as the one and only step in their digital strategy.

Remember, there are about 15 million iPads out there right now, and I don't even know how much bigger that number gets when you add in the other devices that can handle the DC app. But even if we just count iPads, DC only has to penetrate 1% of that market with a digital comic to have the top selling comic book for that month.

Again, ONLY ONE PERCENT (of JUST iPad users). Granted, not every title will penetrate like that, but it's an example of just how low the bar is here. Some books could double or triple their sales if less than half of one percent of iPad users try a digital comic.

So with the right marketing and promotion, this could really be enormous.

I think you'll start to see digital prices fall when the readership grows. Some print readers will opt for digital (for a variety of reasons), some lapsed fans will be lured back by the convenience of digital, some conscientous pirates will take advantage of a legal alternative to rapidshare or BitTorrent, and some print readers (like myself) will use the month-old $1.99 price point to test out books with buzz. That'll be the base that gets this rolling even at $2.99 a book. If and when it spreads to the general public (and I think it will for certain titles), the volume of sales will allow lower prices without sacrificing profitability.

As digital begins to account for the bulk of DC's revenue, you might see print prices drop, but this is all me speculating, so who can say?

Anecdote: My Dad just got an iPad for his 54th birthday. He read comics as a kid, and likes to read whatever trades I pass his way during vacation (American Vampire was a huge hit). First thing out of his mouth when he opened the iPad was "You've gotta show me how to get comics on this!" I'll grant that he's got a lot of predispositions for comics, but he's also not the only one of his kind.

Posted by KenOchalek on 06/13/11 at 11:06 AM

Judging from this list I will be picking up at least 17 #1s. This means the potential for 17 monthly titles. Looks like I'll be needing a better paying job come September...

Posted by SteenAR on 06/13/11 at 11:56 AM

@AquaPimp82  Continuity is damn near the entire reason I don't read most DC titles.  I'm not into what they are doing, or what they have done with a lot of titles.

Posted by Rchapoteau on 06/13/11 at 12:55 PM

@KenOchalek   I like your optimism about digital. But I don't know that the increase in digital sales will necessarily be additive. How many current readers buying paper will switch to digital only when it's day/date? Those won't result in additional sales, just a change in the method they purchase and read the book. Sure, they may pull in some new readers with tablet devices, but how many will just switch formats? And if this happens, what will happen to print?

I think cost is much more significant. Given the price difference, it would make a lot of sense to buy DC books digitally, but wait one month until they drop in price by $1. If I did that, I would save at least $200 a year, on a conservative estimate.

Dude, pull your own head out of your own back side and look at the facts. Barabara Gordon is getting her legs back, Dick was never Batman, Batman never died, Jason Todd is back to being a semi-good guy, Harley Quinn is on the suicide squad, Cyborg is on the Justice League. THEY ARE CHANGING THINGS. Plain and simple. I'm not saying they're changing everything. BUT, they are changing EVERYONE, a little bit. I never said they're startiong out at everyone's origin stories. I'm saying they're rolling back the clock to an earlier point in their careers and chaning things. This is what they did in '86, and it's what they're doing now. Some of the writers have already gone on the record to say exactly that, that this is a earlier point in their careers, and that's where they're at.

They're not canceling continuity, but they are altering it. Some of the stories from current continuity ARE GOING TO DISAPEAR, case in point, killing joke. You can't argue that. That in itself is a big Eff you to fans of that story-line.

And, since you have a tenuous grasp on the English language, here is DC's all enocmpasing quote, and then I will break it down for you:

"
After that week, DC will be renumbering all of their DCU titles, 52 of them to be exact, back to #1."

DC will be : As in the mentioned company is going to do something in the future tense...
renumbering: As in the current numbering will change...
all: An all encompassing descriptive word meaning the entirety of the group it reflects...
of their DCU titles: the subject of the previous word, "all"...
52 of them to be exact: a reflective statement, meaning the number of the subject in the previous line...
back to #1: Describing the placemenet of the new numbering previously stated above, implying the subject will start over at the begining number of the series.

SO... Yes, DC has confirmed that for their Universe, the DC Universe, in September, ONLY THESE 52 BOOKS WILL BE TELLING THE STORY TO START THINGS OUT, AND THEY ARE ALL STARTING AT #1! As for Batman Beyond, it was already confirmed last year that Batman Beyond is cemented in DC's future, not an alternate future, so that would put it in the DCU. Don't look for Batman Beyond in September. It won't be there. They may bring it back in january with batman Inc, but not in September. Need proof? Ready the above definition of what they're doing. Xombi too. When Milestone merged completely into DC, Xombi became part of the whole universe. Therefor, DON'T LOOK FOR XOMBI IN SEPTEMBER. Maybe they'll bring it back in January too. BUT NOT IN SEPTEMBER.

If you want to argue with me, please do. I welcome it. I enjoy it. As a true fanboy of comics, I live for these debates. But if you come back to the discussion without facts and sources to back you up, you're both unprepared, unworthy, and unfit for my time. (Sounds harsh, and I apologize, but seriously, bring me some facts to support what you're saying. Otherwise, go read Tiny Titans and get on with your day.)

Next please.

Now that the solicitations are out,I’ve sat down and decided which titles I’ll be trying out.  Bravo DC, I’ll be picking up 33 issues #1 in September.  That’s 21 more than in August.

Kudos on putting great writers like Grant Morrison, Paul Cornell,  Geoff Johns, Brian Azzarello, DnA, Peter Milligan, Pete Tomasi, Gail Simone (even though I won’t be trying Firestorm because of the co-writing by Van Sciver), Judd Winick (he should have gotten the JLI assignment!)  & Tony Bedard on some of those series but also continuing to use new talent (on superhero titles anyway) like Jeff Lemire & Scott Snyder.  They should also be congratulated on snatching hot indy writers like novelist Duane Swierczynski, G.I. Joe: Cobra writer Mike Costa (The IFanboy team should be happy about that), Joshua Hale Fialkov, Nathan Edmondson (The Who is Jake Ellis? Writer is a perfect fit for Grifter) and Ivan Brandon.

One very important point for me is that all of those (except for the 40pgs ones) are $2.99.  I’ve made a very conscious choice to not pay $3.99 for normal size comics anymore.

There are 17 books I will definitely try, and 9 that I will probably try.

@Mart8El  First, I apologize for the harsh words, it was uncalled for. I felt attacked and I responded accordingly. You do in fact make a point in your latest comment. I, too, don't think we will see Batman Beyond or Xombi in September. The thing is you too replied to some posts with flames in your eyes and wrote the information as if everything would be gone forever and only 52 DC titles would see the light come September.

See what this is doing to fans? Pitting all of them at each other's throat!

Anyways, cheers mate!

Posted by KillTheG1mp on 06/13/11 at 05:36 PM

@kennyg

You raise a good point. I don't think the print market will die out any time soon. The indies prove you can publish even if you're only moving a few thousand books a month, and I think collected editions will stick around -- they look great on a shelf, and I can't read my iPad outside on a warm summer day!

I think you're right -- some readers will simply switch from print to digital on all or a few things. I would beone of them, but I get 20% off at my LCS, so it's still a better deal for me to buy print comics on Wednesday. But I'm also one of those people that don't want to keep filling long boxes with comics, so as soon as digital is a better deal for me, I'll go whole hog. Until then, I'll be using the 1.99 price point to check out books down the road.

But I don't think it's overly optimistic to see the digital market as a huge opportunity. Again, there are 15 MILLION iPads out there RIGHT NOW, not to mention other tablet devices that can/will be able to display digital comics. It's a market that's only just gonna get bigger.

The last ten years have proved that most of the general public won't go to a comic book store. Tie-ins to successful films and Free Comic Day have created some new readers, but the arcane quirks of the direct market are really not something the average consumer WANTS to deal with. Digital has to be the future for the big two, because how "big" are you if you're only moving 80,000 copies of freakin' BATMAN (arguably the most recognizable character in the world)?!

@Mart8El Speaking of Batman, Scott Snyder has stated (on Newsarama I believe) that all post-relaunch changes in the Bat-corner of the DCU flow naturally from current storylines. I'm not saying some continuity isn't being rewritten for other characters, but The Killing Joke and other Bat-continuity isn't being forgotten. (I think that was one of your points, the formatting restrictions of the comment system made your post hard to follow)

How many of these 52 does DC actually expect to sell well? They all can't be huge sellers, I predict we'll see quite a few of these cancalled in a few months time. This seems like they are throwing stuff against the wall and see what sticks.

Posted by IroncladMerc (@mikeha) on 06/13/11 at 06:58 PM

@IroncladMerc  There's no scientific format for creating a blockbuster, or else everyone would be doing it. What DC is doing is diversing their content and making a big move to try to attract people who aren't current buyers. To do that, there HAS to be a level of "throwing things against the wall to see what sticks." Marvel took the same approach when they were in bankruptcy and Jemas and Quesada turned it around.

Posted by daccampo (@daccampo) on 06/13/11 at 07:13 PM

GRAAAHHH! Still no Shazam! And the Marvel Family is apparently totally passed over on Justice League Dark. I mean, a magic Justice League without the Superman of Magic?! What the hell?! Shade the Changing Man, Madame Xanadu, and John Constantine? When was the last time people really pushed for them to be featured, huh? Yet quite a few people here were hoping and clamoring for one. And this is just out of a small number of posters. How many others are out there who don't feel like posting or read Newsarama were hoping for the same thing?

Hey DC just released the Solictations for all of these books (and Vertigo) for September.

It looks like all are going to be $2.99 except for Action Comics/JLA #1 because they're oversized. Plus Men at War/All-Star Western aren't $2.99 because they have back-ups in them.

Maybe talk about that tomorrow?

Posted by TheNextChampion on 06/13/11 at 11:41 PM

DC books I plan to buy after the relaunch:

Green Lantern

Hmmm.  Turns out this wasn't so complicated after all.

Posted by SkipSpacer on 06/14/11 at 10:33 AM

Going back and forth on a few of these titles. I was excited about Animal Man, Swamp Thing, Resurrection Man, and JLA Dark, but I don't know if these characters really work outside of a "for mature readers" Vertigo imprint. If DC allows these characters to retain the more mature and complex aspects that I know and love, then I'm in, but otherwise, it'll just be Morrison's Action Comics for me.

Posted by ActualButt on 06/14/11 at 03:23 PM

@KenOchalek  I also get a discount at my LCS. I have a good relationship with the folks there and enjoy going and talking with other readers (well, most other readers!). And honestly, I just prefer print for comics. I think reading digital comics on anything smaller than an iPad, which can pretty much do a 1-to-1 ratio to a print comic (barring 2-page splashes), is a terrible experience. Even then, I like print better. But to each his own.

Although storage of my 6000+ comics and trades does take up some room!

As a recognized "DC Guy" (at least by the denizens of my LCS), I wish DC nothing but success. I do hope they attract many new readers and retain existing ones. To not try something different would be the easy, safe path, but unfortunately that path can lead to extinction. Hopefully with great risk will come great reward.

Yeah the only non-Vertigo DC books I bought before the reboot were Secret Six and Xombi.  Now they're both gone and while I'm a bit intrigued about the DC Dark line Morrison and Moore made such a strong imprint on Animal Man and Swamp Thing that I just don't know if it will work in a non-mature format.  Right now, Cornell's Demon Knights may be the only one I'm definitely going to try.  I guess that makes me one of the few who preferred things the way they were.  Will try to keep an open mind but this may end up pushing me further into Marvel and indies although I will remain a strong Vertigo buyer.

For me comics are equally a visual as well as a written medium. It doesn't matter how well written the story is if the artwork, costumes, or overall designs suck I won't buy it and can't read it. So far I am not happy about many of the character and history changes posited in the very brief descriptions released. But I will admit it all depends on how well written the stories are which we can not know until September.

We have, however, been given a good look at the visual side of the revamp with pictures of all 52 of the covers. Based on the artwork alone, I will NOT be picking up Wonder Woman, or any of my beloved Superman books. It breaks my heart but the costume designs are just so awful I can't even look at them. Unfortunately it doesn't matter if the writing is genius I just can't look at the art. I have already stopped reading the Flash because I couldn't tolerate the mediocre art. I will try some of the new titles but I am dropping most of the core character books.

Will Action Comics #1 become the highest selling comic of all time?

Posted by yyzKyle on 06/16/11 at 09:44 AM

@yyzKyle  No.

This DC reboot has made me completely re-organize my monthly purchases. Thankfully i narrowed it down last night to 15 books for my budget's sake. I'm really excited I will be able to go pure digital as well with all my books now. No more long 40 minute drives to the dang comic book shop (no offense to comic book shops)

Here is my list for when all this goes down

p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Arial} p.p2 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Arial; min-height: 14.0px}

Marvel:

1. The Ultimates

2. Ultimate Spider-Man

3. Ultimate X-Men

4. Ultimate Mini (Hawk-Eye)

DC:

5. Justice League

6. The Flash

7. Green Lantern

8. Batman

9. Superman

10. Action Comics

11. Detective Comics

Image:

12. Invincible

13. The Walking Dead

14. CHEW

15. Savage Dragon

sorry for weird formating above, apparently copying and pasting out of word is a bad idea in the comments section

@thompsonlive nice list, I can get on board with that!

Oh boy, Polybags!

So I haven't posted on iFanboy in a couple years, mostly because I stopped reading comics 4 or 5 years ago.  I still vaguely keep up with what's going on by podcast, and I buy the walking dead and irredeemable.  Notice that they are both day and date digital.  Yeah, when I said I stopped buying comics, I meant I stopped buying paper comics.  My main problem right now is that it's impossible to catch up, or keep up with DC or Marvel comics through digital.  The backlist is sketchy at best.  There are huge blank spots and they are released out of order.

As you can guess I love this news.  Right now it looks like I will probably buy all the new #1's the first month.  After that we will see.  DC needed to do something like this… give a nice starting point and go digital.   My only real question is there something going on "in world" (crisis like) to explain this or is it going to be completely unexpected for someone who doesn't read comic book news.

I also know that I am bringing along a bunch of friends, who are all excited about this news.  YAY!

(also hope this goes really well and Marvel catches a clue)

I will admit, it all looks very nice. Much like buying a new car, but then you realize the commitment and the monthly payments. There are some cool looking titles here though, but overall I do not think it will last. This is a last ditch effort to keep readers interested in the story lines and an effort to bring in new readers. After it all goes digital, the numbering system will not matter anymore. This is what happens when you let one, decent at best artist have the keys to the castle. Now we are going to have to deal with wrong costumes, wrong backstories and a wrong universe. It will last about a year or so and then they will go back to the way it should be and realize that they made a mistake.

@Cliffjumper  You're not the only one to express the desire for this relaunch and digital initiative to fail, so we can return to some non-existent comic book fan utopia of perfect continuity that never ever ends, but let's define "the way it should be" because I think your version of "the way it should be" ultimately spells the end of the industry.

Do you mean to say that the top 300 comics selling only a few million copies each month to the same couple hundred thousand almost exclusively 30-50 year old men is "the way it should be"?

Because that's the way it is and the way it has been for several years.

I know I'm unfairly putting words in your mouth, but I've read a lot of comments from folks that do seem to like The Way Things Are. And in that scenario, what future does the comic book industry have?

Posted by KenOchalek on 06/17/11 at 10:58 AM

@Cliffjumper  By 'wrong' you mean 'not the ones that I want, even though I do not have enough information to make a truly informed judgment,' right?

Posted by MisterJ on 06/17/11 at 11:19 AM

@Cliffjumper  I wouldn't be that concerned..  It took years but things "fixed" themselves after Crisis (on Infinite Earths), even Barry eventually came back and Batman became less of a “dark knight”.   You remember that those were inventions of the mid 80’s, right?  They really swept the slate clean and completely changed the stories.   This isn’t nearly as drastic.

Also it makes a lot of business sense to have a reboot coincide with a real digital launch.   It answers the question, “Where do I start?” with “Start at #1, DUH!”   Also if six months from now you hear that Voodoo, which you weren’t buying, is really, really good, but your local comic shop is sold out of the issues or didn’t even order them, you can just go online and catch up.

As mainly a Marvel fan, I'm intrigued by DC's relaunch. It takes some guts to reinvent major comic icons. For better or for worse.

@cker: I totally agree with your comments on DC's move to digital as smart business sense. New marketing strategies might reinvigorate DC's lagging sales. Plus, more people might start reading more comics. That's a good thing to me.

Overall, I hope this new campaign is successful for DC.

Posted by TA on 06/17/11 at 09:17 PM

Can we at least agree we want this to be a huge success. We want some... hopefully most.... and I might just pray that all of these creative teams bring us great stories.

Posted by yyzKyle on 06/17/11 at 10:30 PM

@yyzKyle  yes I know i want this to work so that comic book in general get more readers.

Posted by LongtimeReader on 06/18/11 at 11:38 AM

Seriously, I, Vampire? I still don't get it. It's based on an shitty '80s storyline nobody likes turned into a cheap Twilight cash-grab. And they think it's supposed to excite us? Am I the only one who feels like its 2006 again when Sony president Kaz Hirai steps on stage to announce the killer app for PSP and screams "RIDGE RACER!" and nobody gives a damn?

Posted by Archimedes on 06/18/11 at 10:50 PM

@Archimedes  It may not excite you. Hopefully it excites other people. The genre books are probably targeted at people who don't go into the comic book store every Wednesday.
