Foxfire Village: July 26, 2012

Harold Thomas (Hal) Dauber, 95, of Foxfire Village, N.C. passed away 07/24/12 at the Inn at Quail Haven.

Harold was born August 24, 1916 in Brooklyn, N.Y, to the late William Edward and Elizabeth Cleary Dauber.  He was a 1934 graduate of John Adams High School in the Queens Borough of New York City where he won varsity letters in baseball, ice hockey, and swimming.  He competed in short track speed skating events in Manhattan after high school.

Harold was employed by Texaco for 40 years, interrupted only by his service in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.  He served from January 1942 to December 1946 as a Chief Petty Officer, with a final assignment to Adak in the Aleutian Islands of Alaska. Prior to Texaco, Harold worked at the Cocoa Exchange and attended Pace Institute in NY, where he met his wife of 69 years, Clara Durstewitz Dauber.

Upon discharge from the Coast Guard he resumed his career with Texaco and attended New York University in Manhattan, majoring in Personnel Management and Business Administration.  For the majority of his career, Harold worked in the Chrysler Building in Manhattan and lived in Bergen County (Closter), New Jersey where he was active in Little League baseball, served on the Closter Board of Education, and as a Deacon on the Consistory of the Reformed Church of Closter.  For the final 10 years of his career he was Personnel Manager in the International Division for Europe, Central and South America, and West Africa.  The final seven years of his career with Texaco were spent in Coral Gables, Florida.

Harold retired in 1979 and relocated with his wife to Foxfire Village, N.C, where he became an active member of the Foxfire Men’s Golf Association.  He continued to play golf regularly until his early 90s and was proud of his accomplishment of eight Hole in Ones.

In addition to his wife, Clara, Harold is survived by three sons:  Gregory and wife Janice of Tyrone, Pa.; Steve and wife Susan of Simpsonville, SC.; and Russell and wife Mary of Ellicott City, Md.  He is also survived by three grandchildren, Sarah, Julie and Keegan, a sister, Doris Harkins, of Catonsville, Md. and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by an older brother William E. Dauber.

A memorial service will be held at McDonald’s Chapel on Foxfire Road at 2:00 pm on Monday, July 30th with the Rev. Don Welch officiating.  The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall.

Seven Lakes: July 23, 2012

George Augustus Keating, age 86 of Seven Lakes, NC, formerly of Sunnyside, Queens, NY, died on Sunday, July 22, 2012.

He was born on August 11, 1925 and was a WWII veteran and served in the United States Navy. George and his late wife, Barbara (Berry) Keating raised there 6 children in Wantagh, NY. He was a devoted husband and father.  He served as a police officer on the N.Y.P.D. for 23 years and Local 1 Stagehand Union. They later retired to Seven Lakes, NC where he worked as a security officer at Pinewild Country Club.

He is survived by his six children: Barbara Keating and husband Kurt Kreuger of Pinehurst, NC; Michael Keating and wife Debbie of Huntington Beach, CA; Susan Nataro and husband Frank of Hudson, OH; Deirdre Florence and husband Michael of Seven Lakes, NC; Monica Keating of Seven Lakes, NC; and Sean Keating and wife Amanda of Seaford, NY. 13 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild also survive him.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, July 27, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Americas Catholic Church in Candor with Fr. Patrick Flanagan officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Seven Lakes Cemetery in Seven Lakes.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 26, 2012 from 5-7 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Seven Lakes.

Robbins: July 21, 2012

Judy Milner Palmer, age 64 died Friday (July 20, 2012) at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

A memorial service will be held 4:00 PM Monday at the residence 516 Rushwood Rd., Robbins.

A native of Phoenix City, AL she was a daughter of the late Ed and Ruth Martin Milner. She was a seamstress in the textile industry when she was able to work.

She is survived by: her husband Walter K. Palmer; daughters Sherry Allred and Pamela Luck both of Robbins, Brenda Gallardo of Seagrove and Jeanne Duenas of FL; son Jason Craft of MS; 14 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

arthage: July 16, 2012

Thomas "Tommy" Christopher Nunnery, age 28 of Carthage died Sunday at his home.

Graveside services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends at Fry and Prickett Funeral Home Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM and other times at the residence.

Tommy was born in Moore County to Carl and Mary Prevatte Nunnery on August 22, 1983. He worked as a landscaper and for several years had suffered from heart and kidney disease. He was a loving father, son and brother. His brother Billy Ray Nunnery preceded him in death in 2001.

In addition to his parents he is survived by: two children Serenity and Gabriel; brother Carl J. Nunnery, Jr. of Carthage; sister Linda Ross of Robbins.

Carthage: July 13, 2012

Elmer H Zane, age 74, died today at his home.

A native of New Jersey, he was the son of the late, Elmer Daniel Zane and Mary Ellen Stiles Zane. During his lifetime he owned Circle C Trucking Company in Missouri and retired as an air freight manager with Hassett Air Freight in New Jersey. He was precededed in death by his wife, Catherine Engler Zane.

Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie Spence of Carthage and Kelli Lynn Gadallah of New Jersey; a son, William F Zane of Missouri; two brothers, Everette Zane of New Jersey and Charles Zane of Michigan; ten grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Aberdeen: July 12, 2012

John Edward “Eddie” Hardy, age 33 of Aberdeen died on Monday, July 9, 2012.

He was born on February 9, 1979 in Moore County NC. He was a member of Ives Memorial Baptist Church. Eddie loved pro wrestling, spending time with his friends, and enjoyed playing jokes on people. He will be remembered for his sense of humor. He held a special place in his heart for his mother and his family. Eddie formerly worked at Penick Village as a C.N.A because of his love for elderly people. Following this, he worked in construction.

He is survived by his mother, Betty Hazelwood Hardy of Aberdeen; three daughters: Mikayla Beth Hardy, Ashlyn Nicole Hardy, and Kaylee Faith Alison; two brothers: Burl Eugene Hardy, Jr. of Aberdeen and Albert Hardy of Bolivia, NC; he is also survived by 4 nieces: Liz, Anna, Danielle, and Brooke; 2 nephews: Daryl and Luke as well as several cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Burl Eugene Hardy, Sr.; a brother, Daryl Lee Hardy; his maternal grandparents, Moir & Ruby Hazelwood; and paternal grandparents, Luther & Mae Hardy.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Ives Memorial Baptist Church in Pinebluff with Rev. Don Ballenger officiating. The burial will follow at Bethesda Cemetery in Aberdeen. Following the burial friends are asked to join in a Celebration of Life Reception at Ives Memorial Baptist Church fellowship hall.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 13, 2012 from 4-6 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Southern Pines.

Whispering Pines: July 12, 2012

Harriett Rackley MacCoy, of Whispering Pines, passed away on July 12, 2012 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital Reid Heart Center after a brief illness.

Harriett was a native of Hopewell, VA. She was active in fashion, dancing, music, and hotel hospitality management. She has been a resident of Whispering Pines, NC for the past 6 years.

She is survived by her loving husband, Francis J. (Mickey) MacCoy; sons: Mark MacCoy, Todd MacCoy, Craig MacCoy and Bret Lawson and her brother, Brady Lee Rackley, Jr. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren as well as loving nieces and nephews and extended family.

A memorial service will be held at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church on Sunday, July 14, 2012 at 3:00 p.m.

Pinehurst: July 12, 2012

Mr. Burdette McArthur (Denny) Dennington, age 97, passed from this life Tuesday at 7 pm, July 10, 2012. Formerly of East Orange and Livingston, New Jersey, Denny and Joyce, his wife of 65 years, resided in Pinehurst, North Carolina for the last 25 years.

Born on August 31, 1914 to the late Arthur Roscoe Dennington and Grace Lynde (Dodge) Dennington. Denny was an only child. He resided with his parents in the family home at 22 Cleveland Terrace, East Orange, NJ.  A 1931 graduate of East Orange High School and a 1935 graduate of New York University.

Denny served his country during World War II, entering service in 1942. He was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ; Fort Eustace, VA; and Fort Oglethorpe, GA. Denny served the majority of the war years based in Anchorage; Fairbanks and Nome, Alaska. He completed his tour of duty as a Captain of Military Police and was honorably discharged in 1946.

Denny married the former Elizabeth Joyce Brady on April 19, 1947 at the Hanover Presbyterian Church, Hanover, New Jersey; residing with the bride’s parents for the first year of marriage while their new home was constructed at 49 Mt. Haven Drive, Livingston, New Jersey. The happy couple lived at the same address until Mrs.Dennington’s retirement as a teacher at West Orange High School in 1987.

Denny enjoyed a successful business career with Westinghouse Int’l Corp, heavy appliance division in sales. During his 31 ½ years at Westinghouse, he served the companies appliance distributors in the Middle East and the Caribbean.

A voracious reader, Denny was a “fountain of knowledge” on many subjects. A man of few words, he had a great sense of humor; feeling and acting much younger than his age. His stoic demeanor during several life threatening bouts with cancer, remain an inspiration to his family.

Denny is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Joyce; son Ralph of Yadkinville, NC; daughter and son-in-law Mary Elizabeth and Rick Clancy of Poway, CA; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will he held on Saturday, July 14, 2012 at 2 pm at Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst with Rev. Rod Stone officiating. A reception will follow the service and will be held at the church. Denny will be laid to rest at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines, NC.

Seven Lakes: July 7, 2012

Emmeline Madeline Body, 73 of Seven Lakes passed Wednesday July 4, 2012 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.  Mrs. Body was born August 15th 1938 in Brooklyn, NY; to the late Henry John Zinnel and Madeline Richen Zinnel. 

A Funeral Mass will be held 11AM Monday July 9th at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Pinehurst with the Rev. Gregory Anatuanya officiating.  Rite of Committal will be held the same day at 5pm at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines. 

Mrs. Body lived in the Seven Lakes West area for over 20 years.  In her community she became a devoted catholic and member of the local book club and mahjong group.  She found such joy when traveling with family and friends and shopping for that special gift for them. During her favorite past time you would find her curled up on her bed reading a good book or two with Miss Kitty on one side and a bag of Ruffles Potato Chips on the other.   A compassionate, loving, and beautiful person who cherished the time she spent with family; a woman with the most gentle heart that will be greatly missed by those that knew and loved her.

Mrs. Body was preceded in death by her husband of more than 40 years in 2004, Daniel D. Body. Also preceding her were her two brothers, Raymond Fisher, and Sheldon Zinnel.

Mrs. Body is survived by her daughter, Madeline Robles and husband Dr. Beemeth Robles of Phoenix, Arizona ; a granddaughter, Megan Hopper and her husband Brandon of  Phoenix, Arizona;  a brother, Charles Zinnel and wife Carole of Bellingham, Washington; a brother-in-law, William Body and wife Judy of St. Louis, Missouri; a great aunt, Helen Hiegel of Ft. Meyers, Florida; four step-grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews and their children and last but not least her favorite companion and other “daughter”, Miss. Kitty. 

A Vigil for the Deceased will be held from 5 to 7PM on Sunday July 8th 2012 at the Boles Funeral Home in Seven Lakes.

Southern Pines: July 5, 2012

Martha Parker Elliott, 92, of Southern Pines, NC passed away Wednesday, July 4, 2012 at St. Joseph of the Pines.

A graveside service will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, July 7 at Pinelawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, with the Reverend John Jacobs officiating. 

Martha was born in Ahoskie, NC in September 1919 to Ira and Ruth Wynne Parker. Following graduation at age 16 she left home to enter into Mrs. Hardbarger’s School of Business and started working at Durham Life Insurance where she worked full and part-time for the best part of 40 years. She became a “Secretary’s Secretary”, assistant to many top executives at DL. Martha was married to Leighton Elliott for over 60 years.

Martha was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Raleigh, NC. She enjoyed square and round dancing with her husband.
 
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon Davis and husband Woody of Southern Pines and sister-in-law, Inez Fuller and husband “Bud” of Raleigh, NC.  She was preceded in death by 4 brothers and sisters.

Jackson Springs: July 3, 2012

Oscar Samuel Richardson, Jr., age 89 of Jackson Springs, NC died on Sunday, July 1, 2012 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem.

He was born on November 3, 1922 in Moore County, NC to the late Oscar S. Richardson. Sr. and Nolia Autry Richardson. He was a longtime member of Jackson Springs Presbyterian Church where he served as a past elder, deacon, and sang in the choir for many years. He graduated from West End High School. Mr. Richardson was a member of the West End Masonic Lodge for 62 years. He retired from J.P. Stevens. After his retirements he worked for many years at Boles Funeral Home in Seven Lakes. He lived for the past two years at Davie Place and Autumn Care in Mocksville, NC.

He is survived by his sister, Eva Kelly of Berryville,VA; a brother, Leland Richardson and wife Juanita of Mocksville, NC; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Richardson of Carthage; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 2 brothers.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, July 5, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Jackson Springs Presbyterian Church with Rev. Suzanne Simpson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 3, 2012 from 6-8 p.m. at Boles Funeral Home in Seven Lakes.
