In
the lower church of the Basilica of St. Francis are the splendid
frescoes of the Chapel of St. Martin, perhaps one of the greatest works
of Simone Martini and certainly of 14th century painting.
This work has also contributed to the usual debate of critics as to not
only the authenticity of the work but also the exact date of its
execution. Amongst the many scholars who have studied the work, the
first to indicated Simone Martini was the restorer Sebastiano Renghiasci
towards the end of the 18th century. His studies were then
confirmed by Cavalcaselle in 1885, the year in which the “Stories of
Italian painting” was published.
Critics have continued to express diverse opinions with regard to
the date of the work but have reached a unanimous decision that it could
not have been painted before 1317.
This opinion was confirmed by the fact that S. Ludovico of
Toulouse, present in the painting, was canonised in that year. On the
other hand, it is necessary to point out that the image of S. Ludovico
in the cycle only appears in the area of the entrance arch to the chapel,
a zone which logically should be the last to be painted and therefore at
the moment when all the work in the chapel had been completed. Near the
figure of S. Ludovico in the under-arch is a type of iconography totally
alien to the rest of the interior of the chapel.
From
this last analysis it is easy to see that all the frescoes on the
under-arch were not part of the original project but were re-designed at
the last moment due to the canonisation of the saint. In this way the
argument used to place the entire work in 1317 could also be used to
date the completion of the cycle, completely changing old convictions.
With regard to more certain subjects, the decoration of the chapel was
ordered by the Franciscan Cardinal Gentile di Partini da Montefiore who,
in 1321, undertook a journey that took him from Assisi to Siena and then
Lucca, where he died unexpectedly. It is easy to see from this that the
“institution” of the chapel of St. Martin could not possibly have
been before 1312. The fact that the chapel was built in that year does
not necessarily mean that Simone Martini began it immediately or much
later, especially as he had a comparison of style with his other work:
the Majesty , created by in Siena in 1315, with very similar
artistic elements to those in the Assisi cycle, almost certainly
belonging to the first period of the creative formation of the Master.
The cycle of frescos seems permeated by the perspective experience of
Gothic derivation but it should be pointed out that Simone’s approach
to Giotto was not a casual occurrence, rather a sign of the rich
maturity of the artist from Siena.
The first paintings for the chapel were almost certainly the large
dedicatory scenes on the entrance walls and the half-figures of saints
decorating the three windows that were of such high quality as to amaze
all who saw them. These frescoes on the less important part of the
chapel were usually given to the great masters and their helpers.
This
majestic perspective presentation may also be found in the scenes of the
dedication of the chapel. Passing then to the Stories of the Life of
St. Martin one is enclosed in an unequalled Gothic architecture.
The architectonic capsule does not pretend to be an enclosure of space
but rather underlines the existence of a room that is wider, allowing,
when present, a glimpse of the blue sky.
This rich and precious architecture could be exchanged for a relic or
monstrance but there is the sensation of a material consistence that
brings to mind the image of an inhabited castle.
There are also evident iconographic referrals to Giotto’s cycle in
Assisi for example in the scenes of the Funeral of St. Martin, the
portico painted in perspective that is very similar to that present in the
Preaching of St. Francis in front of Onorio III, whilst the two
singing monks are perfectly repeated in the Nativity Scene by
Greccio.
Inside this typically Giotto style tabernacle Simone drew a melancholy
world typical, in this case, of the profane life of the Middle Ages but
he used such a luminous colour that despite the purely Duccio derivation
and the culture of Parisian miniatures he presented, he created
something absolutely new thanks to his evocative spirit.
In the half-figures of the saints placed between the windows in the
dedicatory scene and in all the Stories of St. Martin , colour
becomes the means of illumination, giving form and profundity to the
various surfaces. In some cases in the Death, Funerals and the
Investiture of St. Martin colour is fundamental in creating a
determined atmosphere, to re-create shadows or to perceive the density
of the air breathed. In the figure of the saint as he leans over the
dead body of St. Martin and the bed cover in the Dream, Simone
manages to obtain an absolutely realistic and unparalleled effect.
Through the binomial colour-light the painter manages to re-create such
a soft and calm interior in the scene of the Dream of St. Martin that
to the observer it seems almost familiar within the architectonic
context in which the colour itself becomes the absolute promoter.
All
these elements, characteristic of the art of the Master, are also
present in the eight figures of the entrance arch, placed in twos inside
the spaces of the four Gothic mullioned windows behind which are
glimpses of the blue night sky.
Because of its genial conception, this work was mentioned as being one
of the highest architectonic conceptions of all times.
St. Francis is visible amongst these figures of saints, with his
fantastically surreal sweetness thanks to the perfect balance of
colour-space-plasticity.
One
should not forget that the innovative solutions of Simone Martini’s
painting were also due to his opening towards a profane and laic
evolution, typical of a contemporary European world and above all to the
kings of France, England and Bohemia.

INTRODUZIONE
appunto, proprio in quell’anno.
d’iconografia totalmente estranea rispetto a quella dell’interno
riprogettata all’ultimo momento, a causa proprio dell’avvenuta
Greccio.
All’interno di questi tabernacoli, tipicamente giotteschi, Simone
superfici.
