Vocabulary

There is a lot of focus on vocabulary on the ForumEducation site. We have an enormous database for testing purposes, we have an extensive guide to vocabulary learning, and we have lots of exercises.

Random generated vocabulary tests
Our
tests are ideal for placement purposes. They provide a fair estimation of a learner's (or a teacher's) English vocabulary. Tests can be taken on-line, or they can be printed for the classroom.

The sample test here is not random generated, but you will get a very good picture of what they look like and how they can be used.

How do learners improve their vocabulary?
Our guide to vocabulary learning shows the way. There are no super shortcuts to vocabulary, but there are various forms of support. Here is one example.

General vocabulary test level 2   - new window

Before checking out the test, please note!

The test is static and contains 120 test words chosen among the first 15,000 in our lemmatized frequency database. It gives you a fair estimation of vocabulary size between 4,000 and 13,000 words. If your score is near the bottom or top range you need to take a test at level 1 or 3.

Vocabulary size and general proficiency
Several linguistic and pedagogic investigations have demonstrated that there is a close relation between a language student’s general proficiency and his or her size of target language vocabulary. We have created reliable vocabulary tests, based on studies of word frequencies, which will enable you to assess the size of your students' English vocabulary. After having completed the diagnostic test, they will be recommended to work with contextual exercises, which will enable them to acquire the vocabulary they lacked. They will also be able to actively use the words whose meaning they were able to recognize but which they seldom use actively (passive vocabulary)

Vocabulary frequencies
The vocabulary tests are based on a thorough study of vocabulary frequencies. The tests in ForumEnglish include six different ranges of word frequency, starting with the most frequent words and ending with the most infrequent words. For optimal reliability there are 120 test words in these tests.

The static test here in Visitors, however, has four frequency ranges and a total of 80 words. This test is only a sample. You need to become a member of ForumEnglish to be able to use the real tests.

Random generated tests at three levels
In ForumEnglish you can test your vocabulary size at three levels. These tests are dynamic in the sense that the test words are random generated from a large database.

level 1: up to 8,000 words

level 2: up to 15,000 words

level 3: up to 25,000 words

Your test score will show the approximate size of your vocabulary.

Contextual exercises
Based on these results, you will be recommended to work with certain ranges of the contextual exercises. The best learning results will be achieved if the contextual exercises are taken directly after the completion of the test.

Both the test and the exercises should be repeated after a certain period of time.
