My Broken English
Hear It Clearly, Say It Clearly

that will begin on October 6/7th.

What is My Broken English?

Dear English Language Student,

My name is Sheri Summers.  I am a long-time language teacher and learner.  I found that to really be able to say the words well in another language, I need to be able to hear them well.

Listening to slow songs in the target language is helpful, for example.  And so is asking someone to break the words down into very small, slow pieces.

I want to invite you to listen to My Broken English so you can have a clearer idea of how and why American English words sound the way they do.  Let me break some common words apart so you can hear them more clearly.

Keep reading and let me explain...

How Can My Broken English Help Your Broken English?

When English is spoken slowly, it is enunciated.  That means that each sound is pronounced clearly.  But when Americans speak quickly, it is very common to reduce sounds in words and sometimes drop them completely.

The problem for you is that when you learn a word slowly, you are not learning it exactly how Americans speak it.  And when you hear it spoken quickly, you cannot hear exactly how it pronounced.

So... I have broken American English words that are spoken quickly into small pieces for you.  This way you can hear them well and be able to say them more like a native speaker.  Let me give you an example of a broken word that may surprise you quite a lot...
