ST:TNG's USS Enterprise 1701-D

Pictured below is the Star Trek: The Next Generation ("ST:TNG") USS Enterprise 1701-D miniature. The ship was designed by Andy Probert. This is the four-foot version of the 1701-D, built by renowned model-maker and Star Trek prop archivist Gregory B. Jein, for ST:TNG's third season. "I remember when we finished work on the 4-foot miniature version of the USS Enterprise (there are several versions of the starship, from 6-foot down to only a few centimeters)," said Jein. "We filled a thin glass grape mold with sparkling soda and 'christened' the ship/model."

The four-footer was built by Jein in order to replace the less detailed six- and two-foot models of the ship. "They wanted a more realistic look than the smooth surface of the initial Enterprise," said Jein in Cinefantastique. "We devised a thin layer of what we call 'plating'--raised surfaces. With rim light you can actually see it's not a flat surface. There are actually levels of detail."
