and the Call of Duty Black Ops 2 (when it comes out)...what is he looking at in terms of cost?
I assume he would get the 250GB version...at least four controllers, one headset...what else? what does xbox live account cost?

Console, $300 +/- (assuming with 2 controllers included).
2 controllers, $50 +/- each.
Black Ops 2, $60.
Xbox Live is $60/year.
Headset, $100 +/- for a good one.
Looking at over $600 total.

150 - 3 additional controllers
60 - Black Ops 2
60 - 1 year Xbox live subscription
a perfectly good head set will come with the console. no reason to go out and spend 100 + dollars on this.

Ignore the headset comments. The one that comes with the console works fine. No need to add on to the cost.
I also think that just one additional controller is enough unless you're wanting to have the whole family play at once.

You can get XBOX Live gold codes on ebay for $40ish. I got one for 35 once. Not a huge savings but 15-20 bucks is 15-20 bucks.
There are some good bundles that can be had as well. Especially this close to Christmas. If he can hold out till Black Friday he can get a steal. Assuming he can order online or you'd take him to wait in line for 8 hours

I've used 2 controllers on my box MAX. Xbox live kind of killed the need to have more than that. Death of the LAN party.

100% incorrect. Not only is a good headset very beneficial for a game like COD, but I have the cheap headset that comes with it. I basically have to be eating the mic in order for someone to hear me.
I have a Turtle Beach x11. They can be had for arounf $30 now I think.
