Section 1.0
I N T R O D U C T I O N

University and College Counseling Centers are increasingly using the internet as a vehicle for outreach, training, and collaboration. As counseling center professionals, it is important that we let each other know about our efforts. This ever-expanding document contains information on different internet resources set up by counseling centers, and how to access them directly from your own computer account.

The sharing of resources such as those listed in this document can be invaluable -- we can combine our efforts to provide much more effective services to students (and others) than if we each work separately. We can examine what our colleagues are doing elsewhere and learn from them. The resources we make available locally will be all the more effective if we stay aware of what our colleagues are doing nationally.

For example:
1. if there is information that you would like to include on your local world wide web page that is already currently available somewhere else, you can easily and seamlessly make a link to that information, placing the entries directly in your page.

2. if you are trying to set up your own internet resource, you know that doing so can be cryptic and confusing. You can make things much easier by linking to any of the resources listed in this document and seeing how they did it.

If your site has something that you would like others to know about (e.g., gophers, web sites, ftp sites, muds/moos, and mailing lists), send the information to me and I'll include the information in the next edition of this document. Let me know if you have questions or if anything is not clear (I realize that if you are new to this, this can all be rather mind-numbing, so please do not hesitate to contact me with questions). Any suggestions for additions, corrections, etc are happily received.

David L. Gilles-Thomas, Ph.D.

Special Thanks to: Robert Hsiung, M.D. (University of Chicago), for taking my original text-only document back in August 1995 and creating the first html version of this directory, for helpful suggestions on my first attempt to expand on his work, and for the nice little "NEW" gif.

6.1 BALL STATE UNIVERSITY

Counseling Center
Contact: Joe Abhold, jabhold@wp.bsu.edu
Description:
A large selection of menu-driven information available to students on a system called VTX. In addition, they also have a component called "Concerned Charlie" that acts as an on-line counselor.
Important Note:
The Ball State staff has concerns about other schools tying directly into their materials: "referral information to only our center is provided so what happens if someone's distress is increased by reading the material and then they have no one to turn to, and this would open Concerned Charlie to the world and we have a limited capacity to respond." For more information about this service, contact Joe Abhold (address above).

Section 9.0
G L O S S A R Y

Gopher, the World Wide Web, and Telnet are "places" you can "enter" by executing a command at your computer. These places differ in what they look like and what they can do, but essentially they all will provide you with information. Mailing Lists, on the other hand, let you actually interact with people through email.
Gopher:
Think of a table of contents in a book. This is essentially what you will see: a list of topics that can be selected by moving your cursor to highlight a topic, or pressing its corresponding number (topics are numbered). (To confuse things, some topics can actually connect you to a World Wide Web site).
World Wide Web (WWW):
When you enter a WWW site, you will see nice fonts, colors, and usually some pictures. As the technology grows, you'll be seeing more and more moving pictures and hearing sounds as well (if you have the proper software to show these things (e.g., netscape) -- otherwise you will see some plain old text and no pictures). The World Wide Web replaces the older "gopher" technology: instead of a simple table of contents you will have certain words & phrases (often embedded in a paragraph of text) that will be highlighted -- by selecting these words or phrases you will be automatically linked to information about those topics. WWW technology also makes it easy to send email, to download documents and software, and loads of others things too numerous to list here! And if you have software such as netscape, you can do all of this with a mouse.
Telnet:
Telnet is a program that lets you actually log onto another computer somewhere and use its resources. In other words, to "telnet" to someplace else, you not only need to know the internet address of that place, but you also need to have a valid user name (and sometimes a password too). When you use gopher or the WWW you are not actually logging onto another computer. Don't worry if this doesn't make sense... what's important is what happens when you use telnet: What you will see once you are logged into the telnet site listed in this document is essentially another list of topics that you can browse through and from which you can select topics of interest.
Mailing Lists:
A mailing list is the electronic equivalent of a bulletin board where users post messages to the bulletin board, other people read those messages, and, if they so desire, post their own messages in reply. Many topics of discussion can occur simultaneously. With a mailing list you send your messages to a single email address -- the mailing list program then takes over and forwards a copy of your message to all the other users ("subscribers") of that mailing list. You will receive everyone else's messages as well. The entire process is very simple. Its an excellent way to stay connected to colleagues far and wide.
