FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: January 30, 1996
CHCH-TV has filed applications with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) seeking amendments to its broadcast license which would allow rebroadcast transmitters to be established in nine Ontario markets: London, Kingston, Peterborough, Muskoka, North Bay, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins, and Thunder Bay.
The CHCH program schedule will provide these communities with a significant amount of new programming options. While CHCH is available in a few of the markets on cable, on average 60 % of the programs in the CH schedule are not seen in the nine markets the station proposes to serve, including such programs as Highlander, The Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew, Maple Leaf Hockey on Eleven, Jane Hawtin Live! and Canada Tonight -- WIC Western International Communications Ltd.'s national newscast which originates from Vancouver.
These applications, combined with the station's previously filed requests to establish a programming undertaking or rebroadcast transmitter in Ottawa, would increase CHCH-TV's coverage of the province, permitting the station to fairly compete in a market totally dominated by regional broadcast systems.
"CHCH-TV competes in arguably the most competitive television market in North America where the dominance of regional systems and consolidated station ownership has inextricably changed the competitive landscape of the marketplace. The Commission's approval of these applications will ensure that CHCH is able to compete equitably in the future and is of paramount importance to the long term interests of CHCH," states Jim Macdonald, president and chief executive officer, CHCH-TV.
Most new viewing options come with a price tag and CHCH is confident that the introduction of a new 'free' service, containing a substantial selection of quality programming, will be well received.
CHCH-TV is owned by WIC Western International Communications Ltd., and is a subsidiary of Westcom TV Group Ltd. WIC is an integrated Canadian communications, broadcast and entertainment company with its head office in Vancouver, British Columbia. WIC is the only Canadian broadcasting company operating in television, pay television, radio and satellite network services.
