The SETI Institute is involved in research in the general area of life in the universe, and specifically the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. It is currently involved in about 20 research projects, the largest of which is Project Phoneix, the privately funded continuation of the Targeted Search portion of NASA's High Resolution Microwave Survey.
Project BAMBI is an amateur radio telescope that was developed to encourage other amateurs to join in the SETI search. The system is currently operating in the 4 GHz region, and can run 8,192 channels at a spectral resolution of 1 Hz. Future upgrades are planned.
