ALL-STAR COACHES ANNOUNCED
DORAN AND STANKOVIC TO GUIDE TEAMS IN GAME IN BALTIMORE ON FEB. 9

Daryl Doran of the St. Louis Ambush of the National Conference and Mike
Stankovic of the Baltimore Spirit of the American Conference will coach their
respective conference teams in the NPSL All-Star Game at Baltimore Arena on
Sunday, February 9.

The honor of being an All-Star coach annually goes to those whose teams have
the best record in each conference on the final Monday in January. Doran's
Ambush (16-3) have the best mark in the National Conference. The exception is
that a coach cannot serve two years in a row, meaning Cleveland's Bruce
Miller, the 1996 American coach, will not serve this season despite the
Crunch (18-8) having the best mark in the conference. Stankovic's Spirit
(13-12) have the next-best record in the conference.

Stankovic will be the first coach of the host team to coach in the All-Star
Game since Doran guided the National Conference to a 29-21 triumph in the
1994 contest in St. Louis. That was the Nationals' only victory in the last
six games in the series.

Doran and Stankovic are among eight men to have served as player-head coaches
in the league this season and both participated in the 1996 NPSL All-Star
Game in Wichita as defenders. Stankovic helped the American Conference rally
in the fourth quarter to win, 16-15. The other player-head coaches with NPSL
All-Star Game experience are George Fernandez of the Cincinnati Silverbacks,
Pato Margetic of the Detroit Rockers, Jim Schwab of the Kansas City Attack,
Art Kramer of the Toronto Shooting Stars and Kim Roentved of the Wichita
Wings. Derek Marcano has also played and coached for the Tampa Bay Terror.

Doran, 33, led all players in voting for this year's game. He got 103 votes
as players and head coaches voted for All-Stars from within their own
conference and were not permitted to vote for members of their own team.
Stankovic, 40, finished high in the voting for defenders in the American
Conference, but it is unlikely he will be added to the team when reserves are
announced tomorrow. He recently returned to the Spirit lineup after missing
14 games this season with a knee injury.
