Moonlight. Guitar and Celtic Harp.
Linn Barnes and Allison Hampton. CD2109.
It's safe to say that there has never been an album quite like Moonlight, the latest release by Guitarist Linn Barnes and celtic harpist Allison Hampton. Mindful of the character, color and construction of these pieces, Barnes and Hampton succeed in retaining their natural and frequently earthly charm while deftly adding woven textures and contrapuntal designs. "Louis Collins/Richland Woman Blues", for example bounces along to an alternating bass beat , but Hampton's harp helps make the melody sing. Likewise, "Hesitation Blues" has an added sparkle, as does Van Ronk's "St. Louis Tickle", and Reinhardt's "Tears", arranged for harp-gutiar and harp resonates anew with gypsy soul and swing. Among the pieces more representative of the duo's repertoire is "Eleanor Plunkett", an ancient air by Turlough O'Carolan, which brings the album to a lovely and haunting close.
