VOXEL-MAN, interactive atlases

Voxel-Man/brain is a computerised three dimensional atlas of the human head and brain.

The atlas is based on serial magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of the head and was developed by the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science in Medicine, Hamburg, Germany.

Other atlases are now being developed; Click here to see an animation of the bones of the hand.

At present this software only runs on machines using the UNIX or LINUX operating systems. Voxel-Man junior is now being developed. This will allow interactive exploration of VM data sets on PC and Macintosh computers.

More images and movies of Voxel-Man can be viewed at the Voxel-Man pages at the University of Hamburg.

At Oxford we have implemented Voxel-Man in a fully functional learning environment for anatomy, starting with neuroanatomy and the anatomy of the skull.
Our aims are:
1. to improve VM for teaching purposes.
2. to develop knowledge base systems for medical teaching using Voxel-Man as a graphical resource for the study of anatomy.
3. to provide WWW based teaching materials for anatomy using images and movies generated by Voxel-Man.

Here is a slideshow from a talk given at the Anatomical Society of Great Britain, December 1996. These slides are large graphical files!

This part of the project is funded by the New Technology Initiative of the British Government's Joint Information Systems Committee.
