Corporate Profile


Optivision was founded in 1983 by a team of scientists from Stanford University, the University of California at Davis and the University of Southern California with a specific agenda of building an R&D; base of customized technologies and translating these ideas into commercial products. Since 1993 Optivision has been shipping a broad range of digital video communications products based on the MPEG compression standard. The company also continues to develop optical switching technology for the next generation all-optical networks.

Optivision is privately held with headquarters in Palo Alto, California. The company sells through VAR and system integrators who target specific digital video application markets such as telemedicine, surveillance, distance learning, video on demand, corporate training, and video distribution and transport. Optivision has regional sales offices throughout North America and distributors in Asia and Europe.

Optivision video communications products include the following systems:
VSTOR Series Complete MPEG video compression system with video file storage and configurable LAN/WAN interfaces.
LiveSystem Complete systems and software for building MPEG video-enabled intranet applications.
HSQ Series Complete four channel MPEG decoder systems with SCSI interface.

Customers of Optivision include SeaChange, Inc., the largest supplier of digital video advertising insertion systems for the cable TV industry, the State of Utah which has implemented a state wide distance learning network, and Merrill Lynch which has begun deployment of live video financial news delivery to desktop PCs.

Other customers include the states of California and New York, where several hundred systems are utilized by the DMV for digital image capture capability offered for drivers licenses. In addition to government customers, broadcast and cable TV companies and telecommunication suppliers are using these products for networked video distribution, including video-on-demand.

Also in the government market, NASA and the Department of Defense use Optivision products and services to design a wide range of custom network and image compression applications. For example, an Optivision image compression system was used by the military in the Persian Gulf conflict with great success.
