The Hornet Spinner Page

Introduction

The Hornet Spinner is our group's logo. It is simply a golden letter H with a circle surrounding it, spinning around and around like a globe. The entity has affectionately been referred to as the "Hornarchy" (Hornet Anarchy), but to us it's just a Hornet Spinner.

History

The Hornet Spinner came into effect in early May of 1996. Our group was getting ready to attend NAID (North American International Demoparty) and we all wanted to get matching t-shirts. For that, we needed a logo.

A very nice picture of a real insect hornet had been drawn for the cover of our Hornet Underground CDROM, but that image was too expensive to print on a shirt. We needed something simple. Something instantly recognizable. Something catchy.

I was sitting down with Isaac Turri (the Walnut Creek CDROM artist who had drawn the picture of the insect hornet). I told him we needed something more simplistic. He sketched out a few ideas but none of them seemed quite right.

At the time I was not very proficient with Adobe Photoshop, but I took the mouse and started drawing a huge "H" on the screen with lines, filling it in with yellow. It was not my intention for this to be our logo. I was only trying to give Isaac and myself inspiration. Then he drew a circle around the "H". We ran out of time and I had to send what we had to IOR / Hornet so he could get t-shirts made before NAID started.

As it turned out, the shirts were a great success. A huge bright yellow "H" on a black t-shirt is very recognizable, catchy even. More importantly, our group had a new logo.

Conclusion

This is another one of those nonsense pages that doesn't really do anything productive. Hopefully you found it amusing or at least enjoyable to read. :)
