1997-98 school year builds on
record student achievement
More than 8300 students
are expected to enroll in the 13 Chapel
Hill-Carrboro City Schools this year continuing a
string of years with record-setting enrollments.
The number of students is increasing and so are
their achievements.
Among the
accomplishments within the school system in the
past year are the following:
- Higher percentages
of students continue to earn proficient
scores on End-of-Grade Testing in reading
and math in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City
Schools. Overall, in reading, 87 percent
of students earned proficient scores
while 88 percent earned proficient scores
in math. This represents an increase of 5
percentage points in reading and 8 points
in math since the first year the test was
given in 1992-93.
- Fewer students
scored at the lowest level, or Level I,
than in previous years. In addition,
increasing percentages of students have
demonstrated the highest level of
proficiency or Level IV.
- 95 percent of the
fourth graders at Ephesus Elementary
School achieved proficiency in math this
year and 94 percent of these students
achieved proficiency in reading.
- At Frank Porter
Graham Elementary School, 94 percent of
fifth graders achieved proficiency in
reading
- At Glenwood, 95
percent of fifth graders achieved
proficiency in math.
- At Estes Hills
Elementary School, 93 percent of third
graders achieved proficiency in math.
- At the middle
school level, 93 percent of seventh
graders at Phillips Middle School
achieved proficiency in reading and math.
Nine elementary and
middle schools in the district earned exemplary
status under the new state accountability program
called the ABCs of Public Education. The honor
means that students scores on End-of-Grade
Tests improved at a faster rate than the state
expected. The schools are:
- Carrboro Elementary
- Ephesus Elementary
- Estes Hills
Elementary
- Frank Porter Graham
Elementary
- Glenwood Elementary
- Seawell Elementary
- Culbreth Middle
- McDougle Middle
- Phillips Middle.
Instructional staff at
the school will receive bonuses of $500 to $1000
each. McDougle Elementary School met the goals
for expected growth.
Culbreth Middle School
was one of the top 25 schools in the state in
terms of student academic growth. Representatives
from the school will be honored in September with
a banquet hosted by the State Board of Education.
McDougle Middle School
technology specialist Robert Stocking was awarded
a national Christa McAuliffe Fellowship.
Five elementary teachers
received new national certification from the
National Board of Professional Teaching
Standards. They are: Diana Barefoot, Pat Chancer,
Stephanie Hebdon, Patti Donnelly and Barbara
Elder.
Dedications were held
for two new schools, McDougle Elementary School
and East Chapel Hill High School.
All Chapel Hill High
School seniors completed the requirement to
perform 50 hours of service learning in order to
graduate.
The East Chapel Hill
mens basketball team won the state 3A
championship, a rare honor in the first year of a
school. Coach Ray Hartsfield was named state
Coach of the Year.
Seniors at Chapel Hill
High School scored an average of 1152 on the SAT,
the highest score ever for the high school and an
increase of 92 points from the previous year. The
average is the highest in the state.
