The GTP Championship
The Century Batteries Australian GT Production Car Championship is staged over eight rounds in conjunction with the BOC Gases Australian Super Touring Car Championship.
Concentrating on the east coast of Australia, championship rounds are held in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. Each meeting consists of two (2) Championship races with an average race duration of 20 minutes each, with grid positions for each race determined separately by their respective qualifying round on the previous day.
GT Production will head back to Mount Panorama at Bathurst for the major three-hour endurance race -- the ultimate Showroom Showdown nationally televised live on Network Ten.
The GTP Bathurst 3-Hour will be held in conjunction with the Australian 1000 Classic event. Run on the Saturday afternoon of the Bathurst program, the event marks a return of production car racing to the Mountain -- the spiritual home of showroom production racing. The event showcases all classes from the Australian GT Production Car Championship including leading drivers John Bowe, Jim Richards and Peter Fitzgerald and up and coming stars Andrej Pavicevic and Beric Lynton. The two-driver GT Production race will also feature several leading Ford and Holden V8 Supercar stars and top-line Super Touring drivers. Along with the 3-hour live coverage on Network Ten on Saturday afternoon, a ten-minute highlights package also will be shown on the V8 Supercar raceday on Sunday.
GTP cars will also be on the support program for the 1998 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix and the 1998 Gold Coast Indy Carnival at Surfers Paradise. Attracting more than 500,000 spectators between the two events, these races provide outstanding benefits for sponsors.
