"S3 is uniquely positioned as the only company currently providing performance and feature parity between its established mobile and desktop multimedia acceleration product lines," said G. "Ven" Venkatesh, executive vice president of graphics and audio/communications for S3 Incorporated. "The ViRGE/MX allows mobile users -- for the first time -- to access advanced productivity and presentation capabilities as well as compelling 3D applications."
S3's DuoView Multiple Monitor Capability
The industry's only single-chip solution for multiple monitor support, S3's DuoView allows users to display different images simultaneously on separate monitors -- enabling new presentation and productivity capabilities for mobile users. For example, a mobile user giving a presentation on a TV monitor can simultaneously view their presentation notes on their notebook display; while a mobile user using an additional CRT display can enhance their productivity by using both monitors to easily multitask between multiple applications.
Enabling S3's DuoView capabilities, Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) has incorporated multi-monitor/different image support into its developer release of the next Windows operating system, code-named Memphis. S3's DuoView accelerators, like the ViRGE/MX, are the only products currently capable of providing Level 2 multiple monitor support with a single chip.
In addition, S3 is currently developing software
utilities that will allow end-users to take advantage of DuoView
while using Microsoft's Windows 95 and Windows NT operating systems.
High Performance and Feature Rich
Incorporating the third generation of the S3d engine, support for both Intel's (Nasdaq: INTC) Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) and the ability to connect to either Synchronous or EDO DRAM memory, the ViRGE/MX accelerator delivers high-performance 2D, 3D and video acceleration. 3D rendering capabilities including MIP mapping, bi- & tri-linear filtering, and perspective correction of textures to deliver high quality, visually accurate 3D images, while video acceleration includes arbitrary stretching with X & Y interpolation, double buffering, hue/saturation/brightness control, as well as de-interlacing algorithms for supporting DVD requirements. In addition, the ViRGE/MX accelerator supports all currently-used LCD panels as well as the next generation of high-resolution, fast response panels that are enabling multimedia capabilities on notebook computers.
ViRGE/MX is the industry's only fully integrated TV-out solution resulting in lower cost, lower power and reduced motherboard real estate. In addition to providing an integrated NTSC/PAL compatible TV encoder, a 3-tap adaptive flicker filter has been added to minimize the annoying flicker that occurred with earlier TV-out solutions in the industry. The result is a high-quality image on TV that can be easily used for presentations or even as an external display for Web browsing or normal application use.
Developing Software Solutions
With 3D capabilities on the notebook, software and hardware manufacturers will be able to deliver a new class of applications that offers end users a more real, life-like 3D environment. For example, a product training application viewed in a 3D world can render all sides of a product, including dissected or "zoom-in" views for the user. The ViRGE/MX accelerator will deliver the 3D platform, encouraging development and use of these new types of applications on notebooks.
In addition, through S3's recently announced $20
million investment program and software evangelism efforts, S3
will continue to work with and/or invest in companies that can
utilize the advances in multimedia acceleration technologies for
the desktop and mobile markets. The initial example of this was
S3's development of the RIO (Redistributed Internet Objects)
platform and its equity investment in Intervista Software.
Pricing and Availability
ViRGE/MX is sampling now and is expected to be in volume production in Q2 1997. In quantities of 10,000 the ViRGE/MX will be available for U.S. $38.
In addition, S3 is currently developing an innovative
approach to IDRAM technology, which will be utilized in all of
S3's future product lines. The first mobile product featuring
IDRAM technology is scheduled to be announced in the second half
