Reds Clip Eagles
22 December 1997
The Melbourne Reds continued on their winning way with a 3-1 series victory against the Hunter Eagles in Newcastle on the weekend. The Eagles broke the Reds winning streak in the first game on the Friday night. The Reds didn't like the losing feeling and went on a destruction of the Eagles in the second game, to take it 17-7. Adam Burton once again dominated the Reds offence, collecting 3 hits and two home runs in the win. Shane Hogan and Jeff Spencer also homered for the Reds. Ben Utting was unlucky not to achieve the "cycle". He had 4 hits from 5 at bats, which inluded 2 singles, 1 double, and a triple. Warren May picked up the win for the Reds in a solid performance on the mound.
Game 3 nearly showed that no lead is too big in the Newcastle field. The Eagles nearly pulled off a "Reds comeback", by scoring 5 runs in the final inning to fall one run short. Scott Dawes continued his good form with the bat with 4 hits from 4 at bats, and a home run. Darren White and Glenn Reeves both had two hits from four at bats. Pat Ahearne's first pitching duties for the Reds saw him pitch five innings for only 1 run to pick up the win.
The final game of the series saw Rob Hogan pitch a complete game shutout of the Eagles, allowing only 4 hits. Adam Burton hit another home run to take his season tally to 12. The final score in game 4 was Reds 7 Hunter 0.
