Reds Rout Bandits
30 November 1997
The Melbourne Reds continued on their winning way over the weekend with a four game sweep of the Brisbane Bandits at Moorabbin Oval. The Reds have now beat Brisbane in 7 of their last 8 meetings in the past fortnight amassing an incredible 97 runs in the eight games. The Bandits must be left wondering what they have to do to beat the Reds after having leads of 4/0, 6/0 and 5/3 in three of the four games overturned in what can only be described as an awesome hitting display by the Reds. Reds Manager Tom Nieto described the series as "satisfying'.
'We showed at the weekend how gutsy these guys are. Last season we could never come up with the hits at the right time to turn a game. This year we do. These guys have tremendous faith in each other and confidence in themselves.
We still have a long way to go, but we are pleased to be where we are at this point in time' Nieto said.
Teenage pitchers, Rikki Johnson and Matt Gourlay both recorded wins, as did Warren May and veteran Rob Hogan.
Recruits Darren White(2) and Adam Burton(2) and American imports Derek Shumpert and Chris Ashby all chipped in for home runs during the series, as did last weeks F.A.I. player of the week, Shane Hogan. Shortstop Ben Utting chipped in with 7 from 12 for the series.
Results of the four games were 12/8, 12/1, 11/7 & 11/.7 This weekends sweep has taken the Reds to the top of the ABL table. The Reds play two double headers at Moorabbin this weekend starting Friday at 6.00pm and Saturday at 5.00pm.
