Reds On a Roll
24 November 1997
The Melbourne Reds continued on their winning way last weekend at ANZ Stadium in Brisbane, taking three of the four games from the Brisbane Bandits. Shane Hogan and Adam Burton ignited the Reds bats but support came from all sides as all players contributed at different times. Although they lost the first game of the series, positive signs emerged with import Derek Shumpert hitting form with four hits from five at bats.
Game 2 showed just how potent the reds offence can be with a 20-7 demolition of the Bandits. Shane Hogan led the charge with a home run, six runs batted in, scored three runs and stole 3 bases. Adam Burton also took a liking to the pitching, by hitting two home runs and driving in six runs in the 20-7 win.
The Reds again showed the fighting spirit that has become evident in the past couple of weeks, by breaking open two deadlocked games to take the wins. In the third game, the Reds scored six runs in the seventh and final inning to break open a 6-6 deadlock. The Bandits could only manage one run, to lose the game 12-7. Doing the damage for the Reds was Darren White who hit two home runs, Chris Ashby with a home run and again Hogan and Burton both hitting home runs, 2 RBI's, and scored twice.
The final game of the series also saw the Reds take charge in the final inning, by scoring four runs to break open the game which was locked at 8-8. Rikki Johnson '16' became the youngest player in ABL history to record a win. Reds manager Tom Nieto said "For Rikki to come in in a tough situation, get people out and continue to throw well for four innings was outstanding." Jeff Spencer, Myles Barnden and Glenn Reeves led the Reds offence with three hits each, and a 3 run home run to Spencer.
The Reds this week host the Bandits at Moorabbin with double-headers on Friday at 6:00pm and Saturday at 5:00pm. The Reds should be strengthed by the return on Ben Utting and American pitcher Sloan Smith, who have been out of the team with injury.
