Education and Training of Naturopathic Physicians: Your Constituents Deserve Standards for Primary Care

Naturopathic physicians receive education and training on par with that of medical doctors in general practice. In addition, naturopathic physicians receive substantially more classroom hours overall in areas such as nutrition, counseling, hydrotherapy, botanical medicine, and preventive medicine, which are not required training for allopathic doctors (MDs).

The modern-era licencable naturopathic physicians have a Doctorate of Naturopathic Medicine (ND) earned from four-year, graduate level, federally and regionally accredited naturopathic medical colleges. Studies include two years of supervised clinical internship. To attend naturopathic medical school, applicants complete the same basic science premedical requirements required by the conventional schools of medicine. The first two years of naturopathic education are comparable to the conventional schools of medicine emphasizing basic sciences. The second two years concentrate on natural therapeutics as well as supervised clinical training in outpatient clinics and preceptorship with other licensed physicians. Licensing laws also recognize an era-appropriate education. Graduates possess knowledge and skills grounded in a scientific basis.

Graduates must also successfully complete national board exams (NPLEX) as well any additionally required state examinations, which may include acupuncture, obstetrics and jurisprudence.

There are presently three naturopathic medical colleges in the U.S.:

Bastyr University in Seattle, Washington
National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon
Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine & Health Sciences in Scottsdale, Arizona

Recognizing graduates of accredited naturopathic medical schools with licenses helps protect the public from choosing “mail-order” home study naturopaths rather than professionally trained physicians.
