Improving Internet Access to Mauna Kea Observatories

"Birds of a Feather" Session

Monday, 23 March, 6:30 to 8:00pm, in the Mauna Loa Room at the Kona Surf Hotel

BOF Session Chairs:
Bob Kibrick, UCO/Lick Observatory (kibrick@ucolick.org)
Hilton Lewis, Keck Observatory (hlewis@keck.hawaii.edu)

This session will provide a forum for exploring options to improve the bandwidth and reliability of Internet access to Mauna Kea observatories, particularly from astronomy institutions on the U.S. mainland. It will also provide an opportunity for representatives of those institutions to meet and compare projected requirements and plans for remote access to Mauna Kea observatories from the mainland, including plans for mainland remote observing.

The potential role of Internet-2 will be discussed, along with the technical and economic challenges of providing Internet-2 connectivity to Hawaii. Possible alternatives to existing Internet routes will be described, as will the potential for providing on-demand bandwidth via bonding of dialed ISDN connections. Representatives of the University of Hawaii and Mauna Kea observatories will attend.

Please contact the session chairs if you are interested in participating in this session.
