Questo magnifico affresco di Raffaello raffigura l'immagine della Madonna che soffre vedendo Cristo che trasporta la sua croce. Egli lo dipinse per i monaci di Monte Oliveto, del monastero denominato S.Maria Dello Spasimo di Palermo, la chiesa, (originaria del XV secolo, andò distrutta a seguito degli ultimi eventi bellici) si trova in quella parte della città storica detta "Kalsa", il quartiere arabo nel mandamento Tribunali.
E' attorno al 1506 che inizia la storia dello " Spasimo", quando il giureconsulto palermitano Giacomo Basilicò diede ai padri di Monte Oliveto terreni e rustici.
La storia di questa tela è a dir poco affascinante.
La tela ultimata, venne trasportata via mare a Palermo, ma, a seguito di una tempesta che affondò la nave, l'equipaggio finì in mare e tutto il carico venne perso. Solo questa immagine, essendo chiusa in una cassa si salvò, e venne trasportata dalle onde del mare fino a Genova.
Il ritrovamento apparve come un' intervento divino, ci si prese cura di essa anche se venne ritrovata completamente indenne.
Persino i venti e le onde nella loro furia avevano rispettato la bellezza d'un tal lavoro.
Quando la notizia del ritrovamento si sparse, i monaci palermitani cercarono di riguadagnare il dipinto e con l'intercessione del Papa lo ottennero, ricompensando tutti quelli che lo avevano conservato.
Il dipinto venne trasportato in Sicilia e disposto a Palermo, nel luogo a cui era destinato.
Dopo pochi anni il Vicerè spagnolo che governava a Palermo la fece togliere dal suo posto
per regalarla a Filippo V re di Spagna, e da allora il magnifico dipinto è esposto al Museo del Prado in Madrid.
Così la Sicilia è stata privata di uno dei suoi gioielli, così come l'aveva descritto Filippo V al momento di ricevere l'affresco: ....."è il gioiello più prezioso del mondo".

This magnificent fresco of Rafael represents the image of the Lady that suffers by seeing Christ that transports his cross. He painted it for the monks of Oliveto Mount, of the monastery denominated S.Maria dello Spasimo of Palermo, the church, (original of the XV
century, was destroyed succession of the last war events) it stays in that part of the city
already known as "Kalsa," the Arabic district in the mandamento Courts.
In 1506 it begins the history of the "Pang" when the Plaermo's giureconsulto James Basilicò gave to the Fathers lands of Oliveto Mount.
The history of this paint is a lot fascinating.
The completed paint, came transported by sea to Palermo, but, to succession of a storm that
sunk the ship, the crew finished in sea and all the load came lost. Only this image, being closed in a box was saved, and it came transported by the sea up to Genoa.
The recovery appeared like a divine intervention, there took care of her also if it came
found again completely uninjured.
Even the winds and the waves in their fury had respected of the beauty of a such job.
When the news of the recovery dispersed, the Palermo's Monks tried to regain the painting and they with the intercession of the Pope got it, compensating all those that the they preserved it.
The painting came transported in Sicily and disposed to Palermo, in the place where it was destined.
After few years the Spanish Prince that governed Palermo removed from his place to give it to Phillip V King of Spain, and since then the magnificent painted has exposed to the Museum of the Prado in Madrid.
As Sicily has stayed private of one of his jewels, as Phillip V described the moment when he received the fresco: .... "it is the most precious jewel of the world."

E' considerato il più grande ed il più popolare artista di tutti i tempi.
Raffaello Santi (Raffaello Sanzio), ha ricevuto il suo primo addestramento all'arte da suo padre, il pittore Giovanni Santi.
Egli muore a 37 anni.
Sulla sua tomba, nel Pantheon, a Roma, è incisa una frase latina di Pietro Bembo che dice:

Qui giace Raffaello,
dal quale la natura temette,
mentre era vivo,
di essere vinta;
ma,
ora che è morto,
teme di morire.

RAFAELLO SANZIO (born April 6, 1483 at Urbino, dead April 6 1520 at Rome) Painter and Italian Architect of the Renaissance.
He is considered the biggest and most popular considered artist of all the times.
Raffaello Santi (Raffaello Sanzio), he received his first training to the art from his father, the painter Giovanni Santi.
He died at an age of 37 years.
On his grave, in the Pantheon, Rome, it is
affected a Latin phrase of Pietro Bembo that
tells:

Here Rafael lies,
from which the nature was afraid,
while he was alive,
to be defeated;
but,
as now that he has died,
it fears to die irself.
