UAB comes out of Lincoln unscathed
09/06/98 By TOMMY HICKS Register Sports Reporter
LINCOLN, Neb. -- One of the main concerns of the UAB coaching staff heading into Saturday's game against Nebraska was the possibility the Blazers might suffer some key injuries, based on comparisons with the Cornhuskers in size and strength and roster depth.
Following the game, coach Watson Brown said he felt his team came out of the 38-7 loss without any injury problems.
"I think we came out all right," Brown said, crossing his fingers. "I don't think we had anybody severely hurt. Now, there are some tired and bruised up players in the lockerroom, but there aren't any major injuries that I know of."
UAB COACH HONORED: The trip to Lincoln was special for one UAB assistant coach. Defensive line coach Pat Donohoe, a former NAIA All-America pick at Wayne State, was inducted in the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame Friday night. Donohoe joined a class of 12 persons inducted this year, including a fellow named Tom Osborne.
OSBORNE'S RETURN: Former Nebraska head coach Tom Osborne saw his first Cornhuskers' game away from the sidelines Saturday when he attended the Nebraska-UAB game.
Although Nebraska opened its season last week against Louisiana Tech at home, because the game was a late addition to the schedule Osborne didn't attend because he had scheduled a speaking engagement, one he couldn't reschedule. By the way, this is the first season at Nebraska the team is playing in Memorial Stadium and Tom Osborne Field.
WELCOME ALABAMIANS: As though beating UAB wasn't enough, Nebraska managed to work in a little dig at another Alabama school -- the University of Alabama. On page 3 of the Huskers' game program was a boxed item called "Husker Flashback," a regular feature that highlights a key Nebraska victory.
This week's flashback focused on Sept. 19, 1977: Nebraska 31, Alabama 24. "In one of the most memorable games in Memorial Stadium history, Rick Berns' 128 yards rushing lifted unranked Nebraska to a 31-24 victory over No. 4 Alabama," the feature read. It also mentioned the win was the first for Osborne over a Top 5-ranked team and marked the only week in the 1970s the Cornhuskers were not ranked in the Top 20.
NEW RECORD: Place-kicker Kris Brown became the all-time scoring leader in Nebraska history Saturday when he booted a 27-yard field goal in the third period. His eight points Saturday gave him 315 career points to better former Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier's 312 points.
