"Capcom was the only company that would hire me at that time. Capcom was a really small company. There was only one other person in their research and development department. To tell you the truth, I wanted to go to Capcom because the president told me that in the future, Capcom would be a really big company."

Okamoto's early projects were released in the United States only on a limited basis. He helped with a game called Bargus, then created Sonson. His next title was 1942, a top-scrolling fighter game that was a hit in 1984 and became the model for later games such as Raiden.

By this time, the video game industry had evolved. He had a hardware person assigned to him to create custom hardware specifically for his game.

Okamoto's next games were not particularly successful. Fujihara, another Capcom designer, created Commando and Ghosts 'N Goblins. In comparison, Okamoto's games 1943, Gunsmoke, and Sidearm were unimpressive. These were low times; there were three other designers at Capcom, and Okamoto began to have doubts about his future with the company.

While trying to come up with ideas for his next project, Okamoto stumbled across Double Dragon II by Taito. He liked the idea - a side-scrolling game about gang fights - but was unimpressed by Double Dragon's graphics and gameplay.

By this time, Okamoto had been promoted to game producer and had a large team of programmers to assist him. He knew that his team could improve upon Double Dragon II. The game they created was Final Fight.
