CAUGHT ON TAPE TRYING TO BUY GUNS

Denver Channel 9 news reported Monday night that a gun dealer in Colorado Springs has provided videotape to authorities showing 5 individuals - one female - attempting to buy high powered weapons.

The dealer said he recognized Eric Harris as soon as the news reports of the Columbine High shooting were aired.

"They were real mopey, like punk kids with the makeup on, like punk rockers," said the owner of DRAGON ARMS, Mel Bernstein.

"To me, it was just another bunch of kids who wished they could own everything they see on the wall here. This is like Toys R Us to them."

Bernstein said the group of teens in his store included four boys in trench coats and one girl. He says that and they were driving a grey sedan -- matching Harris' vehicle.

Bernstein refused the sale -- an M-60 machine gun and a silencer-equipped assault pistol -- in early March, saying the gang looked too young.

He says he asked the group to leave his store.

The blond female offered to buy the weapons as she was 18 years old. This appears to be an exclusive for Channel 9.

The DEVER ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS is reporting in Tuesday editions that shooter Dylan Klebold's "prom date" bought two of the weapons used in last week's assault on Columbine High School at a Denver-area gun show...

FED-EX SCREW UP: NRC GOES ON SPECIAL ALERT, PACKAGE CONTAINING NUCLEAR MATERIAL GETS LOST

A 200-pound package containing enough iridium to kill anyone who came near it was lost for days -- without a trace -- by FEDERAL EXPRESS.

Judy Rakowsky is planning a shock report on the incident for Tuesday editions of the BOSTON GLOBE, according to publishing sources.

Ten days ago a worker at a Burlington, Mass. high-tech firm mailed off the package that was supposed to arrive by FEDERAL EXPRESS at a Mexican construction firm the next morning.

It never got there, reports Rakowsky.

"For days, frantic regulators, FEDERAL EXPRESS searched the region -- including a mile-by-mile surveillance of the route from Burlington to Logan Airport for signs of any radiation leakage. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission went on special alert, just as though there had been an accident at a nuclear power plant."

But late on Monday, the package was found, intact, in a hangar at a small airport outside of -- London.

Just a routine mix-up, said a FEDERAL EXPRESS spokesman.

Judy Rakowsky is planning a shock report on the incident for Tuesday editions of the BOSTON GLOBE, according to publishing sources.

SEN. SCHUMER: INTERNET GUN SALES SHOULD BE REGULATED

Senator Charles Schumer [D-NY] warned on Monday that Web sites on the Internet have become a busy weapons marketplace where buyers, including teen-agers, can evade federal laws.

And even though there is no indication that two students responsible for the Colorado shooting purchased their guns online, Schumer now plans to introduce a bill to allow only federally licensed gun dealers to operate Web sites -- sites that would be registered with the ATF.

LAUNCH SET FOR TUESDAY: NEW CIVILIAN SATELLITE TO SPY ON EARTH

If all goes well on Tuesday afternoon, a nine-story Athena II rocket will lift a new breed of satellite aloft from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California -- a satellite that will be used to "record cars, homes, hot tubs, roads, buildings, bridges, convoys, tanks, jets, missiles and mass graves" back home on Earth, the NEW YORK TIMES details in Tuesday editions.

The new surveillance technology is likely to be a powerful new tool for miners, geographers, urban planners, disaster-relief officials and mischief makers of all kinds.

"The sharp-eyed cameras to be launched Tuesday raise fears, too, about lost privacy," reports the paper's Bill Broad.

Images taken by the new satellite will be sold on the open market.

"The Clinton administration released this genie in 1994 when it lifted technical restrictions on private companies, letting them build a new generation of satellites that could peer down to see objects on the ground as small as a yard wide."

The first photos will go up for sale two to three months after the satellite goes into orbit, company officials say.

Photos taken by satellite Ikonos will cost $25 to $300 a square mile. The company launching the bird, SPACE IMAGING, is currently taking orders and soon plans to sell the imagery via its Web site, www.spaceimaging.com.

DEATH EDUCATION WAS TAUGHT AT COLUMBINE HIGH!

Death education classes have been taught at Columbine High School, it has been learned.

The school that became the site of one of the nation's worst massacres this week, was in the headlines in the early 90's for offering death education classes to confused students!

One student even planned to kill herself after attending one of the classes, ABC NEWS reported in a 20/20 profile back in 1991.

"We talked about what we wanted to look like in our casket," student Tara Becker told ABC in an interview.

"Tara Becker believes she was seduced into a suicide attempt by her Death Ed class."

Tara was a junior at Columbine High in Littleton, Colorado, reported Tom Jarriel.

A transcript of the stunning ABC NEWS broadcast was obtained by the DRUDGE REPORT.

Anchor Hugh Downs introduced the segment: "Your child could be in a class that only a few years ago might have been unthinkable- death education. These classes are supposed to prepare young people for coping with death and while most schools make it part of a health class, some actually make it an entire course."

Becker told the news magazine: "I had thought about [suicide] as a possible option for a lot of years, but I never would have gone through with it, never, because I wasn't brave enough. The things that we learned in the class taught us how to be brave enough to face death."

Jarriel summarized: "Graphically introducing death to impressionable young minds is at the core of the controversy over death education in our public schools. Will students walk away from here with clearer understanding of death or with nightmarish memories that might haunt them for life and perhaps, inadvertently, suggest death as an answer to adolescent problems?"

Investigators have intensified their search for a possible accomplice in Tuesday's shooting at Columbine High.

Investigators told one family that has been questioned not to mention the third suspect or reveal his name.

"We cannot tell anyone who it is," the student tells the paper. "They don't know where he is."

Detectives have interviewed the boy's family twice, according to the report.

HILLARY BLASTS 'CULTURE OF VIOLENCE'

In a speech Thursday night before the New York State United Teachers, First Lady Hillary Clinton blasted "the culture of violence that infects the lives of our children."

Making no reference to NATO bombs bursting all over Belgrade, but making every reference to the shooting massacre at a Colorado high school earlier this week, the first lady told the crowd:

"We are going to have to do some serious thinking in this country about how we can take more control over what our children see and experience."

She said: "The constant exposure to violence on TV, in the movies, on video games, in music -- there's much too much evidence that children get desensitized... There's so much of it. We're awash in it...

"We can no longer shut our eyes to the impact the media is having on all our children, and the potentially violent impact it is having on some of them."

The first lady added: "We need to stand up and say what needs to be said about guns and firearms."

Earlier on Thursday, Attorney General Janet Reno Reno warned against "politicizing" the Columbine High shooting that killed 15 and wounded 23.

MEDIA MADNESS: ABC NEWS ISSUES PRESS RELEASE BRAGGING OF INCREASED VIEWERSHIP AFTER SHOOTING

NEW YORK-- In a move that stunned even veteran media watchers, ABC NEWS late on Thursday issued a press release bragging about its increased viewership after the Columbine High School massacre!

"Last night, 20/20 WEDNESDAY featured a full hour of reporting on the tragic aftermath of the school shooting in Littleton, Colorado," Dahlia Roemer, ABC NEWS Media Relations, said in the press release.

"With the exception of the Monica Lewinsky interview, the broadcast delivered its highest ratings since premiering on September 16, 1998," Roemer declared, "easily outrating both Wednesday newsmagazines on other networks."

The press release, that moved with the headline: ABC NEWS 20/20 WEDNESDAY IS HIGHEST-RATED PROGRAM OF THE NIGHT ON ANY NETWORK, even broke down the advertiser-friendly adults 18-49 demos.

"I can not believe that they would be so completely insensitive to the victims and their families," one executive for a rival network told the DRUDGE REPORT late Thursday. "Bragging about the ratings and issuing a press release like this during such a tragic moment in the country's history? Disgraceful. Sickening."
