The following is the text of the message of the President, Shri K.R.Narayanan on the demise of Shri E.M.S. Namboodiripad:

"I am profoundly grieved to learn of the passing away of E.M.S. Namboodiripad. In his demise India has lost a towering personality who made monumental contributions to the freedom movement and to national development. A social theorist of the highest order and originality he was, with Mao Zedong, one of the foremost interpreters of Marxist thought in the less developed world. The architect of India's first land reform, EMS was an administrator of rare vision, acumen and determination. A scholar, historian, journalist, he was above all an educator of the people as well as their leader. Unremittingly, for the last several decades, he analysed the sociopolitical scene from the firm-rootedness of his intellectual position, and enriched Indian political thought to his very last days. His life of uncompromising integrity, personal and political, will be an all-time example.

EMS' departure leaves a void that cannot be filled, for EMS was sui generis. I extend my condolences to Shrimati Arya Antharjanam, and other members of his family and to his countless comrades, friends and admirers amongst whom I have been privileged to count myself."
