LEGISLATURE'S ENDORSEMENT OF TEN HEALTH CARE GOALS HELPS SET STAGE FOR TOMORROW'S FORUM ON FEDERAL FUNDING

     The legislature has unanimously approved a resolution,
 introduced by NDP Leader John Holm, endorsing the Ten Goals for
 Improving Health Care that have been developed by the Canadian
 Health Coalition.  

     "This helps set the stage for tomorrow night's public
 forum on federal funding of medicare and other social services,"
 said NDP MLA Robert Chisholm, who will be attending the forum at
 Acadia University.  

     "The goals outline ways that Nova Scotians and
 Canadians can respond to the crisis in health care funding, and
 build stronger links tying our country together in a positive,
 forward-looking manner."  

     The Ten Goals for Improving Health Care (attached)
 include:

- preserve and strengthen the Canada Health Act's five
  principles of medicare

- make the health care system more democratic, accountable and
  representative

- stop fee-for-service payments

- provide continuity of care from large institutions to care
  in the home

- create the conditions for good health

     The Public Forum on the Canada Health and Social
 Transfer (a plan to cut federal funding by 25% and eliminate
 national standards) runs from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, in Room 241 of
 the Beveridge Arts Centre, Acadia University, Wolfville,
 tomorrow, Wednesday, November 1.  

     It is the first in a series.  The second forum takes
 place in Halifax on November 8.
