What's a Playstation? You're kidding right?
In less than three years, Sony Computer Entertainment America has captured more than 66 percent of the software and hardware market share in the next-generation video game industry, according to a recent tracking study. The TRST tracking study - conducted by the NPD Group - shows that this is the ninth straight month [May 28, 1998] that PlayStation has held the number one spot in an industry known for its changing leaders.
The resulting popularity of the PlayStation has made the game console synonymous with next-generation entertainment. PlayStation recently surpassed the 10-million unit mark for North American sales and can now be found in one out of every 10 U.S. households. The Sony games group worldwide generated more than $5.47 billion in annual sales in FY '98, making it the best-selling product in Sony Corp.'s 50-year history.
The PlayStation game console continues to exhibit global dominance with record-breaking sales reported. As of May 1998, the worldwide Sony Computer Entertainment companies have collectively shipped 33 million units of hardware (11.51 million in Japan; 11.67 million in North America and 9.64 million in Europe) and 236.1 pieces of software (108 million in Japan, 71.1 million in North America and 57 million in Europe). The broadening of the videogame demographic is evident in the new types of gamers attracted to the PlayStation system. According to an internal survey, 50 percent of PlayStation owners are over the age of 24.
