Strategic Plan

DRAFT -- DRAFT -- DRAFT-- DRAFT -- DRAFT

January 1999 - June 2002

In November, 1998, students, staff and faculty were invited to participate in a two-part GLBT Campus Concerns Committee retreat to help develop a strategic plan for GLBT campus community.

Several overarching goals for the UCSC Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered community emerged from these discussions:

  • to increase the visibility of GLBT people on campus and in the surrounding community
  • to increase alliances between the UCSC GLBT community and individuals and groups in the Santa Cruz community
  • to ensure that UCSC and the surrounding communities foster the well-being and safety of GLBT persons
  • to be a community that accepts and embraces diversity
  • to sustain a commitment to being accountable to the UCSC GLBT community regarding the status and progress of our objectives.

During a brain-storming session, participants identified 70 potential objectives for the next three years. These objectives were sorted into the following categories:

  • Outreach and Visibility
  • Social/Cultural Programs
  • Academic/Educational Programs
  • Fund Development
  • Alumni
  • Policy Issues
  • Building Alliances/Networking - Campus
  • Building Alliances/Networking - Community
  • Political Action

Developing the GLBT Community on Campus

From these original 70 objectives, the group gleaned a list of 33, deciding who would be responsible for completing each one, what resources might be necessary, and how long it would take.

The length of time to complete each objective was estimated to fall into one or several of the following categories:

  • Short term : within the next six months (by June, 1999)
  • Medium term: in the next 18 months (by June, 2000)
  • Long term: 3 years (by June, 2002)

A strategy model for achieving these objectives was presented at the retreat and the planning group anticipates that specific objectives containted in the strategic plan will be addressed at future meetings of of the GLBT Campus Concerns Committee and by staff at the GLBT Resource Center.
