Grants reach record levels

Increased research funding may bring better student opportunities

The University of Hawai'i raised a record $164 million from research and other funding in the 1999 fiscal year.

"This money goes to support researchers and their projects," said Jim Manke, assistant to the director of University Relations.

Statistics from the Hawai'i State Department of Labor and Industrial Relations show that nearly 110,000 people work in the retail industry — more than any other industry in the state. National data shows that the trend also extends across the country.
