McDONALD'S CHAMPIONSHIP IN ITALY, GAMES IN MEXICO, ISRAEL HIGHLIGHT SLATE
1999 NBA Preseason Schedule

NEW YORK, Sept. 1 — NBA teams will play 119 games in five countries, 34 U.S. states and three Canadian provinces during the 1999 NBA preseason schedule, which tips off on Sunday, October 10 and continues through Friday, October 29.

The McDonald's Championship in Milan, Italy, the bi-annual global championship of club teams, highlights this year's preseason slate, which also features the NBA's continued commitment to basketball in Mexico, as well as the league's first official preseason game in Israel.

The defending NBA champion San Antonio Spurs will battle five other league champion teams from around the world in the McDonald's Championship, to be held from October 14 through 16 at the FilaForum in Milan. Competing against the Spurs in the McDonald's Championship field are the EuroLeague's Zalgiris Kaunas (Lithuania), Varese Roosters (Italy) of Lega Basket, Vasco de Gama (Brazil) of the South American Basketball Club League, CS Sagesse (Lebanon) representing Asia, and Australia's Adelaide 36ers of the National Basketball League.

The NBA returns to Mexico City, Mexico on October 24 when the Golden State Warriors meet the New Jersey Nets at Palacio de los Deportes. This will be the first time that either franchise has played in Mexico, though both are familiar with international games, as the Warriors played in Paris and Badalona, Spain, in 1994, and the Nets played in the 1996 NBA Japan Games in Tokyo.

Israel will host its first-ever NBA game when the defending Atlantic Division champion Miami Heat travel to Tel Aviv to face perennial Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv on October 11 in Yad Eliyahu Arena. Maccabi Tel Aviv, one of Europe's top clubs, has been Israel's champion for 38 of its league's 45 seasons.

The fourth annual Naismith Cup, the battle for bragging rights in Canada between the Vancouver Grizzlies and the Toronto Raptors named in honor of the Canadian-born inventor of the game of basketball, travels this year to the SkyReach Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, with Shareef Abdur-Rahim and the Grizzlies meeting the Raptors and Vince Carter, last season's NBA Rookie of the Year, at Edmonton's SkyReach Centre on October 18.

The NBA's 1999-2000 regular season schedule tips off on Tuesday, November 2, with 26 of the league's 29 teams in action.
