Smart 50 People

By Sm@rt Reseller Staff, Sm@rt Reseller

19. Ed Zander
COO
Sun Microsystems Inc.

If Scott McNealy and Bill Joy are sun's business and technical visionaries, Ed Zander is the guy who keeps the company running. Named to the newly created position of COO a little over a year ago, Zander has presided over a major reorganization that removed the rigid divisions between Sun's businesses. Zander now oversees all of Sun's revenue.

Ed ZanderSun's stock price has more than doubled in the last year, shooting from the mid-forties to over $120, but Zander's not through yet. He was one of the lead negotiators on Sun's three-year agreement with America Online and is figuring out how Sun is going to sell, market and support enterprise software, an area where Sun has never been successful.

At Sun's recent launch of its newly acquired NetDynamics application server, Zander joked that he and McNealy still remember when Sun launched workstations.

When pressed, Zander admits that he knows "a little" about application servers. He'd better, given Sun's competition.

20. David Ochser
Director of Marketing
Enterprise Solutions Group, Ingram Micro Inc.

To those who question the future of distributor-reseller relations and there are plenty of skeptics out there David Ochser (pronounced Ox-er) may seem a cockeyed optimist. But the head of marketing for Ingram Micro's Enterprise Solutions Group (ESG) remains convinced that distributors and resellers can forever be bosom buddies. And ESG, says Ochser, can help point the way to that happy marriage.

"Right now, our charter is to evaluate all of our vendor relationships and find those software products that are not shrink-wrapped, and deliver them to resellers as part of complete packaged solutions," explains Ochser.

In other words, don't call Ochser a box pusher.

21. Arthur Tyde
CEO and Founder
Linuxcare Inc.

Thanks to Arthur Tyde, Linux support is no longer an oxymoron. Aiming to fill a major void in the open-source software movement, Tyde is creating a 24 x 7 Linux technical support standard for individuals, companies and Linux distributors.

With support for all of the major Linux distributors, and a contract with Dell Computer, Linuxcare is the Linux market's early support leader.

Though Linuxcare is a start-up, don't expect it to crash and burn. Tyde is a seasoned support expert who built and maintained mission-critical support systems for the California State Automobile Association. Tyde says he spotted the Linux support opportunity about six months later than he should have. Even so, Linuxcare was still first from the gate.

22. Brooke Powers
VP and General Manager, Systems Marketing
Tech Data Corp.

As the executive who runs tech data's systems division, brooke Powers has to manage relationships with hardware OEMs no easy task given the topsy-turvy state of the channel..

Powers, however, has worked to expand Tech Data's Factory Direct colocation program, in which it closely partners with such companies as Compaq Computer and IBM. In colocation, Tech Data operates a distribution center in a hardware vendor's manufacturing center. The arrangement reduces touches and transportation time, taking days out of the delivery cycle. Powers has since cut costs again by adding configuration capabilities to Tech Data's colocated distribution centers.
