8/11/99 (FULLERTON, California) -- Columbus Crew midfielder Jason Farrell tallied the go-ahead goal in the 65th minute and forward Brian McBride added an insurance goal in the 88th minute as Columbus defeated the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-1 at Titan Stadium in Fullerton, California to advance to the semifinals of the 1999 U.S. Open Cup.

The semifinals will be played at the Virginia Beach SportsPlex in Virginia Beach, Va at a date to be announced. The finals are September 14 at Columbus Crew Stadium at 8:00 p.m. in a nationally televised game on ESPN.

In the 65th minute, after a small collision between Galaxy goalkeeper Matt Reis and McBride about 16 yards from goal, the loose ball finds the right foot of Farrell who knocks home the shot into the empty net to put The Crew up 2-1 in what proved to be the game-winner.

The insurance goal came after Crew defender Mike Clark tracked down a ball on the end-line and played the ball back to McBride who slotted a left-footed shot past Reis for the final margin of victory.

A heated first half saw The Crew go on top 1-0 in the fourth minute on a goal by McBride. Midfielder Brian West received a long ball out of the back and carried the ball into the right side of the box where his square ball found an open McBride 12 yards from goal.

McBride's right-footed shot beat Ries to his right. Los Angeles notched the equalizer in the 37th minute on an unassited goal by defender Greg Vaney. The Galaxy outshot Columbus 13-6 in the first half but could only manage three shots on goal to Columbus' four.

For the game, Los Angeles outshot Columbus 25-16, but The Crew had 10 shots on goal to the Galaxy's four.

Each team played with 10 men for the final 40 minutes of the match. In the 44th minute, after a hard tackle by The Crew's Brian Maisonneuve on Mauricio Cienfuegos of L.A., Cienfuegos head butted Maisonneuve while he was still on the ground and was ejected by referee Kevin Stott. Maisonneuve received a yellow card for the hard foul. Then, in the 50th minute, Maisonneuve was given his second yellow card of the match for pulling on the shirt of the Galaxy's Robin Fraser.

Maisonneuve will miss the semifinals because of the ejection.

The Crew now heads to D.C. in a clash of Eastern Conference rivals in a nationally televised match on ABC on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at RFK Stadium.
