1999 (?) - Palestinian country code assignment

Various news reports indicate that country code 970 was assigned for the Palestinian territory. Subscriber numbers in this area would leave the Israel telephone numbering plan (+972) at some unknown time. Original reports predicted activation of the country code in March 1999 but this has been delayed.

No numbering plan details for conversion from Israel numbering plan are available; Israeli telephone numbering remains in effect in the meantime. Any change will require arrangements with Israel and the Palestinian Authority

Various changes

Miernik News and information on Poland's telephone system, including numbering changes is available thanks to Miernik.

1 September 1997 - Krakow, Przemysl changes

Krakow subscriber numbers expanded to 7-digit format from 6 digits.

Przemysl subscriber numbers expanded to 7-digit format (6 then former 6-digit number), and area code changed to 16 from 10, that is a +48 10 xxxxxx number changed to +48 16 6 xxxxxx.

See CEEBIC news page for details (unstable link or may be unviewable on some browsers).

Also, check Miernik's Poland phone information page for some details on the Krakow changes.

30-31 October 1999 - National Renumbering

At the end of October, Portugal restructures its national numbering plan into a national 9-digit format, without area or access code.

New geographic numbers will consist of the digit 2, then the area code, then subscriber number. For example, a Lisbon number of (1) xxx.xxxx before the October 1999 numbering plan will become 21xxxxxxx.

Land mobile numbers (area codes of the form 93x) will be converted by dropping the digit '3' from the area code. A mobile number dialled under the old plan as 093x xxx.xxxx will be dialled as 9xxxxxxxx under the new plan.

6-digit Internet numbers will be converted by adding '000' after the number (e.g. 61xxxx becomes 61xxxx000).

All nine digits of the national number will be dialed in all cases. The use of 0+ as a STD/long distance prefix will be discontinued.

There will be no parallel running of the old and new numbering plans. An interception recording will remain for 6 months after the numbering change for callers who dial subscriber numbers under the old plan.

Outbound international calls continue to be dialed as 00 + international number.

From other nations, calls will be dialed as:

+351 + (new 9-digit subscriber number)

Summary of some of the new number formats:

2xxxxxxxx - geographic numbers
646xxxxxx - Audiotext (premium)
800xxxxxx - freephone
808xxxxxx - freephone
91xxxxxxx - Telecel
96xxxxxxx - Optimus

Details are on a National Numbering Plan website (http://www.icp.pt/numeracao/faquk.html) from ICP (telecom regulator).

1992 - national renumbering

A recent major area code restructuring appears to be complete. This started 15 November 1992 with the change of Bucharest from area code 0 to 1, and prepending all other area codes with the digit 9 (e.g. 21 became 921). Subsequently, at some date not exactly determined, these codes were again changed to a new format (with Bucharest remaining 1).

1998 - national numbering change

Spain has adopted a national 9-digit subscriber number plan in early 1998. New numbers were formed with the digit 9 followed by the area code then subscriber number from the previous format e.g. Madrid +34 1 xxxxxxx becomes +34 91xxxxxxx from other nations. Within Spain, all domestic calls whether local or long distance will require the new 9-digit number. The dialing sequence for calling from one area code to another remains unchanged as the initial 9 was previously used as the domestic long distance prefix.

Permissive dialing of either old or new format numbers was scheduled to end 6 June 1998.

See Telefonica Press Releases or Telefonica information page.

See also Telecom Italia press release regarding the change from an Italian perspective. This suggests the change took effect for inbound international callers as of 4 April 1998.
