Happy Odd day!!
From Kevin McKinnon:
Yesterday was November 17th, 1999. The numerical format for yesterday is 11-17-1999. All of the digits are odd. The next Odd day will be 11-19-1999.
(Tomorrow!!) The next Odd day after that will be 1-1-3111 - which is well over a thousand years away, which we will never see. Days such as 4-13-89 have both even and odd digits, thus, it is neither odd nor even. The next even day will be 2-2-2000 - th
e first one since 8-28-888. So, now you have a reason to celebrate this Friday as it'll be your last odd day on Earth!!!!!!
Have a nice odd day!
(Please forward this on _TODAY_ since tomorrow will be too late!)

Britannica.com's Gender and Computing Technology
Over at Britannica.com's new website (for those of you who just arrived on the planet, the ENTIRE Encyclopedia Brittanica is available online for free), they've grouped the Web's Best Sites into categories. A very Geekrights-oriented section is their "Gender and Computer Technology".

Time Short For Restrictive High-tech Employment Contracts
Submitted by Jon McClintock
A recent court decision that's getting considerable attention from high-tech companies and their legal counsel, should not come as any surprise, according to New York attorney, Ken Plevins, a member of the computer and information technology practice group at Skadden, Arps, Meagher & Flom.
According to an article which appeared in the Nov. 5, 1999 edition of "Cyber Law Journal," the case involved a lawsuit brought by an New York-based Internet company against one of its employees who had signed a "limited agreement not to compete," as part of his contract of employment. The agreement prevented Schlack, the employee, from working for a company "directly competing" with EarthWeb for a period of 12 months after leaving his employment with EarthWeb.

Haiti shuts down its largest ISP
"Francois Duvalier -- aka Papa Doc -- may
be long dead, but critics say the current
government of Haiti is just as intolerant
of free speech.
An alliance of human rights and civil
liberties groups this week published an
alert criticising a decision by the Haitian
government to pull the plug on one of the
country's largest access providers."

Time for Geekrights.org to get going!
Ok, I've been slacking a bit (the usual excuses, new job, moving at the end of the month, blah, blah, blah), but that's going to stop...
However, I need your help. Geekrights is a big project for one person (research is the timekiller), and unless I plan on quitting my job, I'm never going to have time to do this myself. Steady volunteers have evaporated, so what I'm asking is: If you're a news-nut like me (or worse), please keep Geekrights in mind during your daily surf. Submissions don't have to be anything more than an URL, and would go a long way towards making this website work and grow.
For those who have submitted anything recently, my email problem is SOLVED. Any submissions which arrived over the last two weeks are not gone, just stored until such time as I get a moment to go through them. Thanks!!

Article from Richard
Ames Hart
Here's something well worth the read for many of you, though not everyone
will accept what it says at face value (maybe that's a good thing?). Richard Ames Hart writes this piece
regarding predjudice, communication, intelligence and the unfortunate
situation of turning the hate towards oneself.
Continue on throughout the rest of the site...you'll be surprised what you see.

How to Manage Geeks
Yet more proof that it's the Geeks who are going to inherit the earth...and you gotta believe it when the CEO of Novell thinks so.
The real way to manage geeks, I think, is to be one yourself. How else can you understand when we begin to talk geekspeak on an issue vital to the company?

US Congress may ease importation of high-tech grads
In a move to aid companies who are not able to find qualified US citizens to fill high-tech jobs, US congress maybegin legislation to ease restrictions. Unfortunately it will only apply to those making $60,000 or more with a degree. As far as I can tell, experience won't cut it.

Governing body for internet needs to
be controlled
Though the internet is based on principles of freedom, equality, and in a lot of ways, anarchy, it would not be terribly difficult for a governing body to either gain too much control or allow corporate interests to gain control and nagatively impact what
makes the 'Net so great.
Ralph Nader, consumer advocate spoke recently on the need for placing limits on ICANN. Here is more information on what he and others are saying.

Unions seek low-paid high-tech workers
We've been talking about this one for a while...in fact, I've tried not to talk about it TOO much. It's coming though...Low end high-tech workers, most especially those who are 'temporary' (meaning that they often work longer for a company than the 'permanent' workers), are realizing how wide the gap is becoming between the haves and the have-nots in the silicon workplace.
