April 15th is still more than two months away, but apparently Intuit wants you to get a jump on your 1999 federal taxes. The Quicken maker is offering a $10 mail-in rebate on its popular TurboTax tax preparation software. That brings the $19.99 selling price down to just $9.99. TurboTax provides an easy to use, interview-driven method of computing your taxes. Returns can be filed electronically or printed out for mailing, and an error-checking feature warns of entries that might trigger an IRS audit.

A 433MHz Hewlett-Packard Notebook for $1,179
Hewlett-Packard's Omnibook XE2 is a full-featured notebook that hit the market last summer with a 333MHz configuration and sold for around $1,600. Since that time its processor has been upgraded to a 433MHz Celeron, and its selling price has dropped to a much more attractive $1,179 at web-based computer stores such as Insight.com. The 7.8-lb. Omnibook XE2 includes 32MB RAM (expandable to 256MB), a 4.8GB hard drive, a 12.1-inch Dual Scan display driven by a video subsystem with 2MB VRAM, a 24X CD-ROM, and a 56K modem. This is a new (unrefurbished) notebook that ships with a one-year warranty from Hewlett-Packard.

In the market for a new PC that's powerful, affordable and easy to maintain and upgrade?
