The Institute of Ideas is a unique event - six days of thought-provoking
discussions on some of the big issues facing humanity today. Initiated by LM
magazine, and organised in collaboration with major institutions in London, The
Institute will engage with key debates around the themes of freedom, culture,
science, thought and morality.

We live in an age when debate is too often sidelined in deference to consensus;
when the intellectual cutting-edge of academia appears to have been blunted; when
politics is more about style than content. Those who believe in the importance of
a thriving intellectual sphere need to find a new arena for critical thinking and
the space for a robust exchange of views. The Institute of Ideas aims to be such
a vehicle - an intellectual map for the twenty-first century.

A fresh perspective on sex and human relationships in a suspicious world
From campaigns around unsafe sex to stories about harassment, from stars
claiming sex addiction to stories of date rape, intimacy is often seen as a
problem more than a pleasure. LM magazine, the ICA and The Maverick Club

address society's obsession with sex. The debates were heated, lively and
controversial, with speakers including Carl Djerassi, inventor of the
contraceptive pill, Cathy Young, author of Ceasefire, Daphne Patai, author
of Heterophobia, Peter Tatchell from OutRage!, and many others. To find out
more, go to the Sex Wars website.

'LM is the most interesting and provocative magazine I have read for many years.'
JG Ballard
The February 1997 issue of
LM magazine ran a story which raised embarrassing questions about ITN's
award-winning pictures from a Bosnian Serb-run camp.
ITN tried to have every copy of the magazine, which contained the article
'The
Picture that Fooled the World' by German journalist Thomas Deichmann,
pulped.
LM refused to back down and ITN sued the magazine's editor and publishers
for libel. Read the whole story here. |
