Columbia-Minerva, "Big & Little Crochets" Leaflet 2519, 1970

Directions are for Small Size (8 to 10).  Changes for Medium (12 to 14), Large (36 to 38) and Extra Large (40 to 42) are in parentheses.

Gauge:  5 sc to 2"; 5 rows to 2"

MATERIALS REQUIRED:  Columbia-Minerva  KNITTING WORSTED (4 oz pull skein)       OR  NANTUK 4-PLY KNITTING YARN  (2 or 4 oz pull skein): 6 (8-8-10) ozs 
Needle: One "Boye" crochet hook Size J 

Back:  Ch 35 (35-43-43) loosely. 
Row 1: Starting in 2nd sc from hook, crochet 1 sc in each ch st--34 (34-42-42) sc across row, ch 2, turn.
Row 2: 1 hdc in 2nd sc from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 sc, 1 hdc in next sc, repeat from * across working last hdc in turning ch, ch 2, turn. Counting turning ch at start of row as 1 hdc there are 18 (18-22-22) hdc and 17 (17-21-21) ch-1 spaces across.
Note: Turning ch always counts as 1 st.
Row 3: 1 hdc in first space, * ch 1, 1 hdc in next space *, repeat from * to * across 18 (18-22-22) hdc and 17 (17-21-21) spaces, ch 2, turn.
Row 4: 1 sc in first space, * 1 sc in hdc, 1 sc in next space, repeat from * across, ch 2, turn. Mark end of Row 4 for lower edge.

Repeat Rows 2, 3 & 4 for pat, working marked edge straight for lower edge and inc'ing at opposite edge for armhole.

Row 5: Work as Row 2 to last sc, ch 1, 1 hdc in last sc for armhole inc, ch 1, 1 hdc in turning ch, ch 2, turn.
Row 6: 1 hdc in first hdc for an inc, ch 1, 1 hdc in first space, repeat from * to * of Row 3 across, ch 2, turn. There are 20 (20-24-24) hdc across including turning ch.
Row 7: Work as Row 4 on the 38 (38-46-46) sts then ch 19 for armhole, turn.
Row 8: 1 hdc, in 2nd ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 hdc in next ch, repeat from * across chain, skip last ch st, ** ch 1, skip 1 sc, 1 hdc in next sc, repeat from * * across, end last hdc in turning ch, ch 2, turn--30 (30-36-36) hdc across. Starting with Row 3 work 6 rows in pat for shoulder, end at lower edge with Row 2.
Row 15: Work as Row 3 to last 9 hdc, ch 2, turn.  Starting with Row 4, work 7 (13-19-25) rows in pat, end at lower edge with Row 4.
Row 23 (29-35-41): Work as Row 2 then ch 16 for side of neck, turn.
Row 24 (30-36-42): 1 hdc in 2nd ch from hook, ch 1, skip 1 ch, 1 hdc in next ch, continue in pat to lower edge, ch 2, turn. There are 30 (30-36-36) hdc. Starting with Row 4 work in pat for 6 rows for shoulder, end at lower edge with Row 3.
Row 31 (37-43-49): Work as Row 4 until there are 37 (37-45-45) sts, ch 2, turn.
Row 32 (38-44-50): 1 hdc in 3rd sc for armhole dec, work in pat across, ch 2, turn.
Row 33 (39-45-51): Work first 18 (18-22-22) sts including turn, ch 2, turn. Starting with Row 4, work in pat for 4 rows, end with an sc row.  Fasten off.

Width across back is 15 (17-19-21) inches.

Front: Same as back as pat is reversible.

Sew side and shoulder seams.

On right side starting at side seam, crochet 3 rows of sc around lower edge holding in to fit.  On right side, starting at underarm, crochet 1 (1-2-2) rows of sc around armholes.  Starting at shoulder, crochet 2 (2-3-3) rows around neck holding in at corners for rounded effect.  Fasten off.
