This page is dedicated to the finest vise ever made, the EMMERT Vise.

Here in my brain-dump on how to mount an Emmert written before these origianal doccuments becme avalible:

Mounting an Emmert

>Oh, and you Galoots currently debugging the mount-an-Emmert procedure... could you please send me the summary?

First things first set the vise up on a sturdy bench "upside-down" and crank the front jaw all the way out till it screw release and separate the two halves.....

Now, flip the vise so that the inside face of the rear jaw in face down on the bench.. you will notice the back of the hub has two screws in either side.. remove these screws and the rear ring will come off...

Now grab the outer hub/flange assembly and lift it straight-up.. the assembly will come off leaving the inner jaw on the bench.. now it'll be MUCH easier to maneuver around and mount...

Mounting should be pretty self explanatory from there on out..

Just make a few mortises to recess the flange so it sits flush w/ the top and front of the bench, (for thick benches (over 2" you will need to relive the underside of the bench to get the hub to fit under the bench when the vise is in it's "normal" position.. I needed to do some serious clearing out of material on mine...

In fitting it up I found blackening the flange w/ some candle soot and test fitting revealed the high spots that needed further relief...

Okay, set it in place and clamp it so it is not likely to be moving....pre-drill your holes, wax you?re screws and drive them home.

The screws.... the top of the flange has 3 holes.. The two outer holes will take some nice long screws (as long as your bench-thickness will allow, by virtue of it's size and mass it pretty much _requires_ a massive slab of a top..... I used 2.5" long screws)

Okay, now listen-up... The screw used in the center hole on the top flange CANNOT be longer than 2" or else it WILL DAMAGE the hub! I used:(2) #18 X 2-1/2" for the outer top two holes...(1) #18 X 2" for the center top hole...And (2) #16 X 2-1/2" for the front of the mounting plate....

Okay, now.... for the HARD part:-)

With the vise in the "natural" position take your support rod attached to the hub-clamping bolt-end and slip your cotter-pin in place...

I had to set a big flat-washer as a spacer on each side of the bar, as well as use a short peice of copper tubing to increase the OD of the pin which travels through the bar, since my Emmert came without a stanchion and support rod, and as auch I tried to use them from Lee Valley Tools' Tucker vise (a nice Reproduction of the real Emmert, It worked after some modifications, and was mucho cheaper and faster than finding an original...:-)

Attach the support stanchion loosely to the other end and then raise it (the stanhion) into position on the underside of the bench and affix it w/ some double-stick tape. Then grab the hub and flip it up to make sure the mounting position is not too far foreword or back so the bottom of the bench-slab does not interfere w/ the rod in with the vises travel to horizontal...... got it? great! Mark the screw holes, remove the stanchion, pre-drill, set it back in place and drive the screws home....

Your just about done!

Re-install the rear jaw, and replace the rear retaining ring (you DID make sure to note it's orientation before you took it off didn't you?-).. Okay, now, carefully hoist the front jaw/ screw assembly into place and crank her closed, have yourself a Hard Cider as you stand there basking in the afterglow and consider yourself welcomed as the latest member of the FOYBEVO/U.....

> John, got any of those big screws left?

Nope all-gone.... but try the fine folks at:

Jamestown Distributors 28 Narragansett Ave. Jamestown, RI 02835 (401) 423 2520 (800) 423 0030

That is where I got mine from.. (but be prepared for "sticker-shock".. they are NOT cheap ;-)

They only offer the #16 and #18 Flat Head in Slotted drive. But they offer them in: Silicone Bronze, or 18-8 Stainless Steel (I used Stainless but I now wish I go the Bronze, they are just too "shiny-new" and look out of place on that well patniated(is that a word?) Emmert.

Well gotta run.. RugRats is on......
