McCall's Step-By-Step Crochet, Book 2, 1968

Young and feminine blouse with matching triangular head scarf has an easy, effective pattern stitch. Shallow neckline and cuffs of wrist-length sleeves are gently shaped with rounds of single crochet. Crocheted button closes opening at back.

SIZES: Directions for size 10-12. Changes for 14-16 are in parentheses.
   
Body Bust Size: 31"-32" (34"-36").
 
 Blocked Bust Size: 35" (39").

MATERIALS:

  • Fingering yarn, 3 ply, 10 (12) 1-oz. skeins.
  • Plastic crochet hook size F.
  • Steel crochet hook size 2.

GAUGE: 1 pat = 1"; 4 rows = 1" (Size F crochet hook). 6 sc = 1" (Size 2 crochet hook).

PATTERN (multiple of 6 sc plus 4): Row 1 (wrong side): Ch 1, turn. Sc in first sc, * ch 3, sk 2 sc, sc in next sc, repeat from * across.
Row 2 (right side): Ch 3, turn. 3 dc in first ch-3 sp (1/2 pat made), * ch 2, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, 3 dc in next ch-3 sp (1 pat made), repeat from * across, end dc in last sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first dc, * ch 3, sk 3 dc, sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, sk next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp, repeat from * across, end ch 3, sk 3 dc, sc in top of turning ch.
Row 4: Ch 5, turn. Sc in first ch-3 sp, ch 2, * 3 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, repeat from * across, end dc in last sc.
Row 5: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first dc, ch 3, sk ch-2 sp and sc, sc in next ch-2 sp, * ch 3, sk 3 dc, sc in next ch-2 sp, ch 3, sk next sc, sc in next ch-2 sp, repeat from * across, end last repeat ch 3, sk next sc, sc in 3rd ch of turning ch. Repeat rows 2-5 for pat.

___PULLOVER: BACK: Beg at lower edge with crochet hook size F, ch 107 (119) to measure 17-3/4" (19-3/4"). Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across -106 (118) sc. Work in pat having 17-1/2 (19-1/2) pats on pat row 2 until 59 rows from start (about 14-3/4" from start), end on pat row 3 on wrong side. Check gauge; piece should measure 17-1/2" (19-1/2") wide. Mark for underarm.

___Shape Armhole: Row 1: Ch 2, turn. Yo, pull up a lp in first sp, yo and through 2 lps on hook, yo, pull up a lp in next sp, yo and through 2 lps on hook, yo and through remaining 3 lps on hook, work 2 dc in same sp, ch 2, work in pat to within 2 sps of end, ch 2, work 2 dc in next sp, yo and pull up a lp in same sp, yo and through 2 lps on hook, yo and pull up a lp in last sp, yo and through 2 lps on hook, yo and pull up a lp in last sc, yo and through 2 lps on hook, yo and through remaining 4 lps on hook-1/2 pat dec each side.

___Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first st, ch 3, sk 2 dc, 1 sc in next ch-2 sp, work in pat across, end ch 3, sc in last st. Repeat last 2 rows 3 times-13-1/2 (15-1/2) pats. Beg with pat row 4, work even for 6 rows, end pat row 5.

___Divide for Back Opening: Ch 3, turn. Work in pat until 7(8) shells of 3 dc are completed, end dc in next sc.

___Next Row: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first dc, ch 3, work in pat across-6-1/2 (7-1/2) pats. Work even for 12 (14) rows -28 (30) rows above underarm marker, end arm side.

___Shape Neck and Shoulder: Beg with row 4 (2) of pat, work in pat until 3 (4) shells of 3 dc are completed, ch 2, sc in next sp, ch 2, dc in next sc.

___Next Row: Ch 1, turn. Work in pat across. End off.

___FRONT: Work as for back omitting back opening until 22 rows above underarm marker (about 5-1/2"), end on wrong side with pat row 5.

___Left Half of Front: Row 1: Ch 3, turn. Work in pat until 4 (5) shells of 3 dc are completed, end dc in next sc.

___Next Row: Ch 1, turn. Sc in first dc, ch 3, finish row - 3-1/2 (4-1/2) pats. Work even for 6 (8) rows. End off.

___Right Half of Front: From right side, sk 7 shells of 3 dc on last row before start of neck shaping for neck edge; join yarn with a dc in next sc, 3 dc in next sp, finish row - 3-1/2 (4-1/2) pats. Work even for 7 (9) rows. End off.

___SLEEVES: Beg at lower edge with crochet hook size F, ch 77 (83) to measure 12-3/4" (13-3/4"). Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-76 (82) sc. Work in pat having 12-1/2 (13-1/2) pats on row 2 until 59 rows from start (about 14-3/4"), end on pat row 3 on wrong side.

___Shape Cap: Work rows 1 and 2 as for back armholes 4 times - 8-1/2 (9-1/2) pats. Work 4 rows even, then repeat rows 1 and 23 (4) times more - 5-1/2 pats. End off.

___FINISHING: Steam-press pieces lightly. Overcast shoulder seams, sew in sleeves. Sew side and sleeve seams.

___Crochet Border for Sleeves: Beg at seam, from right side, with crochet hook size 2, work 1 row sc around lower edge of sleeve, skipping every 3rd st-51 (55) sc. Continue to work around, work 1 sc in each sc working in back lp only for 5 more rnds. Join with a sl st. End off.

___Neck Border: From right side, beg at neck edge at top of right back opening, work 1 row sc around back opening, keeping work flat, continue around neck edge, holding in to desired size, join with a sl st in first sc.

___Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in back lp of each sc around. Join with a sl st in first sc. End off.

___Row 3: From right side, join yarn with a sc in back lp of first sc at neck edge of left back opening. Work 1 row sc around neck edge only, working in back lp. End off.

___Row 4: Repeat row 3; do not end off.

___Rnd 5: Sc in end st of last row of neck edge, ch 2, sk next row, sc in back lp of next sc (buttonhole made), sc in back lp of each sc down back opening to within 2 sc of center of opening, pull up a lp in back lp of each of next 4 sc, yo and through all lps, sc in back lp of each sc up opening and around neck edge. Join with a sl st in first sc. End off. Steam-press edgings and seams lightly.

___BUTTON: With crochet hook size 2, ch 4. Work 7 dc in 4th ch from hook; join with a sl st in top of ch 4. End off leaving a 10" end for sewing. Thread needle; stuff button with yarn, draw sts tog. Fasten securely. Sew on button.

___HEAD TRIANGLE: Beg at front edge, with crochet hook size F, ch 137 to measure 22-3/4". Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across-136 sc. Work in pat for 3 rows-22-1/2 pats. Work rows 1 and 2 as for back armholes 21 times-1-1/2 pats.

___Next Row: Ch 2, turn. Yo, pull up a lp in first sp, yo and through 2 lps, yo, pull up a lp in next sp, yo and through 2 lps, yo and through 3 lps, dc in same sp, yo, pull up a lp in same sp, yo and through 2 lps, yo, pull up a lp in last sp, yo and through 2 lps, yo, pull up a lp in last sc, yo and through 2 lps, yo and through remaining 4 lps. Ch 1, turn. Sc in first st, ch 3, sk dc, sl st in next st. End off.

___Border: From right side, work 1 row sc on foundation ch, holding in to about 22", continue to work sc on shaped edges, working 3 sc at points, keeping work flat. Join with a sl st in first sc.

___Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in back lp of each sc around, working 3 sc in sc at points. Join with a sl st in first sc. End off. Steam-press.

___Tie Strings (make 2): With 2 strands of yarn, ch 61. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, working in single strand at back of ch. End off leaving 10" end for sewing. Sew one to each end of front.
