5-12-99 - PACIFICA CRACKS DOWN ON EVE OF FUND DRIVE AT KPFA, KPFK

Pacifica's national office has hired a security guard service on the eve of KPFA's Spring on-air fund drive.

KPFA news reports that Pacifica development director Sheryl Garner-Shaw told a KPFA staff member that the guard service was hired because of threats received by Pacifica following the firing of Nicole Sawaya and Larry Bensky.

However, Garner-Shaw was unable to explain why the security guard would be on duty in the KPFA lobby, rather than in the Pacifica offices next door.

The KPFA news also reports that the guard service is estimated to cost $10,000 a month.  (Staff salaries at KPFA average about $2,500 a month.)

Meanwhile, KPFK station manager Mark Schubb has threatened his staff once again on the eve of their fund drive, with a memo purporting to represent staff opinion.  Schubb has previously censored the weekly program "Counterspin" from KPFK, as well as a segment of the Pacifica network news.

There has been no further communication to KPFA staff from Dr. Mary Frances Berry concerning her promise to continue talks with KPFA staff, following last week's inconclusive meeting, and her on-air appearance with Lynn Chadwick.

If you are concerned about the intimidation of KPFA staff through the imposition of a guard in the KPFA building...and if you think the issues involved in the current crisis should not be censored from KPFK's (and other Pacifica stations!) air, please write or call (again!)
