The most recent version of GEDitCOM is version 2.6. This web site describes the dates and changes between this version and all previous versions in reverse chronological order. Only the major changes are listed here; details about all other changes are listed in the What's New help topic of the GEDitCOM on-line help when you download the application.

Version 2.6

Version 2.6 was first posted on the internet on April 3, 2000 and then reposted on April 20, 2000. The major new features are:

  1. The Default GEDitCOM Format has been changed in many ways. The changes are mostly about appearance, but a few new features have been added too.
  2. The Default GEDitCOM Format is now also available in a French language version. This translation is functionally identical to the English format. The new Format GEDitCOM par défaut is not provided with the standard download, but you can get it separately from the Downloads page.
  3. Formats on the Fly: All available GEDitCOM Formats are now listed in a submenu. You can use that menu to easily switch between formats.
  4. You can check any GEDCOM file for corrupted GEDCOM records, for bad dates, for dates that do not seem reasonable, for broken links between records, and for invalid GEDCOM tags. This option is especially useful for checking GEDCOM files downloaded from the internet.
  5. Some features requested by users: sorting of children, sorting of spouses, and definition of a home record. The reposting fixed a bug some users encountered in the new sorting options.

Version 2.5.1

This version fixed a conflict with Mac OS 8.6 when opening files. It was posted on March 2, 2000. Also fixed were a bug in the new "More Details" tree option that found dates when there should be no dates and some printing template problems with a few multi-line text fields.

Version 2.5

Version 2.5 was first posted on the internet on March 1, 2000. The major new features are:

  1. GEDitCOM now has many Internet Features. You can access your favorite web sites with the new Web Menu and you can put Internet Links in Genealogical Records to document your research with internet sources.
  2. There are many new options for drawing family trees such as more colors, a new box style, new box content options, and the ability to go left-to-right, right-to-left, top-to-bottom, and bottom-to-top.
  3. The Relatives searching option has been enhanced to get all relatives, just ancestors, or just descendants. Besides just finding the names of relatives, you can optionally have the list include each relative's birth and death date information. Finally, the list as well as search results can now be exported to a plain text file.
  4. By control-clicking in many places you can get a Context-Sensitive Popup Menu. This new feature is most useful in the Index Window and will let you open any record related to the clicked window. Context-Sensitive Popup Menus can also be used in editing windows to learn the function of any button or link.

Version 2.2

Version 2.2 was first posted on the internet on December 3, 1999. The major new features are:

  1. Version 2.1 enabled GEDitCOM to read large files (>32000 records) but some things got very slow as the file got very large. In version 2.2, many things are faster. The faster features of GEDitCOM will be most noticeable when working with large files, but GEDitCOM is now faster with all files.
  2. Some things (like file searching and large family tree compilations) will inevitably be slower in large files. Whenever GEDitCOM enters a long calculation, it will display a progress box and let you type Command-Period to exit that calculation.
  3. There are many new options for family trees. The new customization options include horizontal and vertical trees and centering alignment. In centering alignment, children are centered on the cells for the parents giving a more tree-like appearance to family trees. Family trees also now use cross-referencing to make trees more efficient and to prevent faulty GEDCOM files from causing a tree to enter an endless loop.
  4. GEDitCOM now supports full color printing of all graphic elements that may be added to custom report templates. If you do not have a color printer, you can disable color printing using a new ``B&W Printing" option in the General Preferences.
  5. There are many minor changes (many requested by users). There are ``Scrolling" menu commands to scroll through records in a file and arrow buttons in some windows to do this scrolling. There is a method for easily recognizing living and dead individuals and marking them if desired. Shift-typing will reset the typed searching string in the Index Window. Files can be autosaved at any time interval.

Version 2.1

Version 2.1 was finished September 30, 1999 and first posted on the internet on October 11, 1999. The major new features are:

  1. The main new feature in version 2.1 is the ability to print custom books. You can print an entire book complete with a table of contents and an index from any GEDCOM file.
  2. The format of the book printed by GEDitCOM is determined by the current GEDitCOM Format. GEDitCOM is now provided with a new format called the Book Format that is specially designed for printing books.
  3. GEDitCOM will now work correctly for files with more than 32,767 individual records. Previously, the Index Window would not scroll correctly when there were more than 32,767 names in a single file.

Version 2.0

Version 2.0 was first posted on the internet on May 28, 1999. The new features are:

Version 1.0.2

Version 1.0.2 fixed a rare memory bug. It was posted on the internet on January 29, 1999. The bug fix was:

  1. Version 1.0.1 and earlier could run out of memory after creating many new individuals by certain methods. Only one user reported this bug, but it could be reproduced by creating a new file, creating a husband and a wife in a new family, and then attaching 11 children by creating new individuals in the child-attaching dialog box. The 11th child caused a memory error. The bug was fixed in version 1.0.2. The bug did not cause any crashes or any loss of data.

Version 1.0.1

Version 1.0.1 fixed two minor bugs in version 1.0 and added one simple new feature. It was posted on the internet on January 8, 1999. The changes from version 1.0 are:

  1. Version 1.0 could crash or be unpredictable if, during a single editing session, you delete INDIVIDUAL records, create new INDIVIDUAL records, and attach those new records to other records (e.g. attach as child or spouse in a family). The bug is fixed in version 1.0.1. The bug would never cause damage to a GEDCOM file.
  2. Version 1.0 could crash when doing certain typing actions in the Index window or in some dialog boxes for files that do not have any INDIVIDUAL records. Because all useful GEDCOM files contain INDIVIDUAL records, this bug probably did not affect anyone. The bug is fixed in version 1.0.1.
  3. Version 1.0.1 now honors leading spaces in lines of free-format text notes or other multiline line editing fields. You can therefore indent such text, if desired, for more readability.

Version 1.0

Version 1.0 was the inaugural version of GEDitCOM. It was first posted on the internet on December 7, 1998. A few people may have downloaded a copy that was labeled ``version 0.5" when choosing Get Info on the application. Copies labeled version 0.5 are identical to version 1.0 except for the string that displays when getting info on the application.
