Tune Your Security

MbM and I made a wrapper for execve() that allows logging (and optionally, filtering logging for only root). Good for monitoring security on your system, especially with the root filter, to make sure only things that are supposed to be run as root do, etc. Get it here.

Making Netscape all perty like
  by Larry Reckner [larryr@linux.com] - Skill: B - Jul 25, 1999
You can change the default colors of all aspects of Netscape by making modifications to your .Xdefaults file. You can change the titlebar, text color, button barts, input windows, etc all by making a few simple modifications. For example, I like a pretty much grey Netscape config, so my .Xdefaults looks like:

# Netscape*backgroundPixmap: \
Netscape*background:#848692
Netscape*Text.backgroundPixmap:XmUNSPECIFIED_PIXMAPMP
Netscape*Text.background: #848692
Netscape*XmText.background:#848692
Netscape*XmText.backgroundPixmap:XmUNSPECIFIED_PIXMAP
Netscape*XmTextField.background:#848692
Netscape*XmTextField.backgroundPixmap:XmUNSPECIFIED_PIXMAP
Netscape*XmScrolledWindow*background:#848692
Netscape*XmScrolledWindow*backgroundPixmap:XmUNSPECIFIED_PIXMAP
Netscape*urlBar*Text.background:#505276
Netscape*urlBar*Text.foreground:#9ea6ff
Netscape*urlBar*Text.backgroundPixmap:XmUNSPECIFIED_PIXMAP
Netscape*urlBar*List.background:#505276
Netscape*urlBar*List.foreground:#93a6ff
Netscape*urlBar*List.backgroundPixmap:XmUNSPECIFIED_PIXMAP
# Netscape*toolBarFrame*backgroundPixmap: \
# Netscape*toolBarFrame.?.?.backgroundPixmap: \

To re-read your .Xdefaults file, use the command xrdb -load .Xdefaults

background pixmaps??
 Comment by Tom von S. [tomvons@elephant6co.com] - May 08, 2000
Whats the deal with background pixmaps in netscape? I have seen plenty of screenshots of people using them, but I can't seem to get them to work myself. Often the sample .Xdefaults files I see are commented with something like "This used to work but now it dosent and I dont know why". For example, this line appears in one example from x.themes.org (well, I adjusted the path):
Netscape*backgroundPixmap: /home/images/test.xpm

Is there a way to get this to work??

Welcome to the Tune.linux.com database. Tips are ranked by skill level.

Beginner:
General purpose items aimed at new linux users, simple and to the point. These tips tend to cover basic console manipulations without going into much technical detail of how things work behind the scenes.

Intermediate:
Here's were we start getting into the technical side of how linux works, many of these tips deal with configuration files these tips are detailed enough that someone with a moderate background in linux should have no trouble doing.

Advanced:
Almost all of these tips deal with kernel configs and performance tweaking that is far more than you wanted to know. It's suggested that you make backups of relevent files before trying these -- remeber if you break your system don't say we didn't warn you.
