Netball has received confirmation that it will be included in the programme for World Games 2001 Akita, Japan.
The 2001 World Games will be held in the northern Japanese city of Akita. Akita faces the Japan Sea and is one hour's flight time from the nation's capital, Tokyo. Both road and rail links are currently being expanded and improved, to make Akita more easily accessible from major population centres. The natural beauty surrounding the city and throughout the region is said to be incomparable. Within walking distance, there is accommodation for over 700 people which can be made available for the World Games.
The proposed dates for the 2001 World Games, which have yet to be finally confirmed, are 16th - 26th August.
The Bidding Committee believe it is important that the people of Japan enjoy those sports not previously performed there.
World Games 2001 Akita is set to be a global event with international media coverage. It is intended to make a complete archive of the Games, with the end product being donated to IWGA and the International Federations of all sports disciplines.
COMMONWEALTH GAMES 2002
Whilst 2002 may seem a long way away, the ever increasing congestion of the international sporting calendar is well known and this creates the need to schedule major events many years ahead. Netball is included within the programme for the Commonwealth Games 2002 in Manchester and the dates for the Games have now been announced as Thursday 25 July to Sunday 4 August 2002.
These dates have been placed on the IFNA calendar and the Games will take precedence over any other events at that time.
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2003
Jamaica has been confirmed as the hosts of the 2003 World Netball Championship. The third Netball World Championships in 1971 also saw Kingston, Jamaica host the event.
The only other time that the World Champs have been held in the Caribbean was in 1979 when the Port of Spain in Trinidad host the tournament.
